Uh-oh
"I've already had a couple of guys tell me not to let [your nerves] get the best of you, not to overthrow and to just stay within yourself." - Jesse Litsch
Oh fuck, the kid is fucked already, isn't he? Stay within yourself? Again??? What kind of fucking advice is this?
I mean, when your advice to the first soldier you send charging out of the trenches is, "Keep your head up!" and he immediately gets machine-gunned to pieces, do you really say the same thing to the next guy?
Maybe that's a really poor analogy, but for fuck sakes, I think you've got to at least consider that "stay within yourself" might be exactly the kind of meaningless horse shit that confused and frustrated Towers when he wasn't able to do it.
I don't know, how about: "You better not fuck this up, kid, or Thomas is gonna rape the shit out of you. Frank doesn't even have to be out in the field, so ain't nobody gonna notice him follow you down to the showers. You think I'm kidding?"
Just a thought.
On a different topic, immediately following the soundbyte that produced the quote from Litsch at the top of this post, Ernie Whitt was on the Fan590, chatting with Mike Hogan and Mike Toth.
They tried admirably to coax some answers out of Whitt about Gibbers' decision process on the McDonald pinch hit, where Rios sat on the bench. Like the manager, Whitt wasn't saying anything.
I guess it's possible that Gibbons simply forgot the Rios was on the bench, and they're covering for him, but I don't think so. I half expected to hear that Rios had been traded or something-- and maybe he almost was. But my guess is that it was disciplinary. Seems to me like a shitty time to stick to your guns, but maybe it wasn't even Gibbers' call.
Strange, though, that they'd be so evasive.
Today's Side Note: Uninteresting article in the Star today about the lives of two married Olympic rowers, which nicely illustrates some of the shit that is exactly wrong with the goddamn Olympics. These selfish assholes actually fucking lament (boo fucking hoo!) how they are hardly able to spend time with their toddler because they are so busy training, because they just have to prove that they're the best in the world at some sport that nobody gives a shit about!!!
Get jobs and spend time with your kid, you morons! God, I fucking hate the Olympics.

Did you see the picture of him on mlb.com? He looks like he's 12. Ya think Tejada will confuse him for the batboy, i.e. Manny and JT?
