Another Flight of Stairs
According to Sportsnet, it's being reported by ESPN today that the Jays have agreed to a two-year $3.5m contract with their fucking nails Canuck outfielder, Stone Cold Matt Stairs-- and it's just like that rotten fink Ricciardi to let something like this get into the US media and letting the Canadian media find out from there.
Regardless, as much as I don't quite understand how this makes sense and kind of think it's a shame to take away major league at-bats from Adam Lind, how do you not fucking love Matty Stairs? Welcome back, Stairsy!

I see that ESPN has decided that Lind and Stairs will be platooning in left.
Did you fine folks see this:

HIGH-LARIOUS!
He was taking grounders at third last season. I wonder if the Jays will try him there in ST?
He'd be a nice fallback for those times Glaus has an ow-ie.
Heck, could he be any worse than Ed Sprague defensively?
He could probably get 300 or more AB without significantly affecting other players playing time if we were shuttled around the IF/OF corners, DH and well as PH duties.
Not exactly Tony Phillips but certainly useful.
I'm sure Frank Thomas would be willing to give him at bats against certain RHP if J.P. converted the option in his contract to a straight player option.
(I've got a creeepy eeeeasy feeling...--before your time, I know.)

Glaus might have 50 games of thumb-twiddling, don't forget. Sure, Stairs at third... why not?
A lefty-lefty platoon won't work so well, it's true.
Sandra, I don't get it.
So, seriously, is Chatelaine cover girl Sandra Oh really leaving comments on your blog, or is this just another Jamie Campbell fake job?
Oh, its Sandra alright.
The link is to Jordan Bastian's blog on the Jays' official website. His now SECOND post there is about a minor league team (the Mud Hens) sending a contract offer to A-Rod's agent.
I thought it was funny. But I could be alone on this. Mr. Bastian even did a little PhotoShopping. Your man who's obsessed with Josh Towers might have some competition....
Ahhhh.... I only looked as far as post one. I met Jordan at the Silver Dollar once. True story.
I'm thinking she means the Mud-Rod post if you scroll down a little on Bastian.
Stairs has the knees of a 39-year-old and has never played a game at third in his life. I don't think we want to know how bad he could be out there. He was smiling and laughing when he mentioned that as a possibility- I think that would only be worth it in an emergency or special case a la Troy Glaus at SS.
Matt Stairs at 3B does seem like a bit of a disaster. But how about a fellow Canuck stepping up his game at 39 and then picking up a big paycheck?
GOLD!
I say let Adam Lind rot in AAA.
There is absolutely no way that Stairs is less mobile at third than Glaus. He'd be OK in a pinch.
People were worried whether Molly (another guy known for being brittle) could handle 3rd in 1993--turned out O.K.
I do agree, only in a pinch--like an important game (remember those?) where you want as much lumber in the lineup as you can get and Troy is hurting. Also it has to be a game where the Jays start a RHP and the opposing team uses a mostly left-handed hitting lineup.

It's more the arm I'd be worried about...at least Molitor had played most of his prime at the hot corner. Picking up a new position and playing it at the big-league level is not as easy as it looks. Maybe he would be passable, I guess I'm just playing devil's advocate to the leagues of fans who penciled him in for every game Glaus is out as soon as he took a couple grounders before a game.
Hmmm, ESPN might have Stairs and Lind platooning, but J.P. is telling CBC that Stairs will steal some time from Reed if he keeps hitting like he did last year. Maybe Dougie has been written off too soon (what else is new?)...
Hey John- flex that press pass and get us the real scoop! :)
Ok no need...it's on the main page that Johnson is back as our main man. I wonder if that has anything to do with Stairs coming so cheap.
It makes sense, but...
Personally, I'm just not sold on locking yourself into average players (yes, Stairs had a good year) at the expense of your top (well, now #2) prospect. Sounds like JP might really be willing to go down with the ship.. . It's his job to lose, I guess.
Jonathan:
A press pass ain't much fun without a game to watch. :-) I'll see if I can sniff out anything.
Funny thing is, when I picture Stairs at third, I suddenly see Ron "Penguin" Cey 2.0.

This team is really going up shit creek. They're becoming very reminiscent of the Raptors at the end of the Grunwald era.
Stoeten,
He's making two million next year, not ten. If Lind hits his way back into the major leagues then the contract is light enough that JP can bench Stairs, and probably even trade him.
Stairs on Stairs:
"I have good feelings about it when, at 39, you prove that you can still play," Stairs said. "I think the biggest thing is -- if, hopefully, I do come back -- they know that they're going to have a pinch-hitter, a left fielder and a right fielder, a first baseman and, who knows, maybe a third baseman."

it's not right to bag on glaus at 3b, he's actually quite good according to some stats (5th in the AL in RZR).. just because he's a big guy who has a few foot problems doesn't mean he can't get it done.

There's something weird going on though, because he shows up dead last in ZR according to STATS. (I even sent the Hardball Times an email about this and they said they didn't know why). The games I watched last year tell me to believe the numbers that say he sucked.
It's not meant to bag on Glaus; he simply needs time off during the season due to his leg miseries. It would be nice if the Jays could plug in a solid bat into the spot when he needs to rest.
I still like Glaus and expect him to hit 30+ HR and post an OBP/SLG of .360/.500. I also think we shouldn't expect any more than 125-odd games from him.
