Troy Rolen For Scott Glaus?
Normally, when I use terms like swap and third base in the same sentence, I'd be referring to my Friday night, not men in their early thirties. However, Kenny Ken Ken (Rosenthal) is reporting that the Toronto Blue Jays and the St. Louis Cardinals are close to swapping third basemen.
I'm not sure if I read it on a ridiculous message board (is there any other kind), but I remember hearing about this proposed deal earlier in the offseason. Back then my first reaction was "Why? Aren't those guys the same players?"
From a St. Louis perspective I understand how this deal might be appealing. Tony LaRussa and Scott Rolen get along about as well as Tony LaRussa and a drunk tank, which is to say not very well. Rolen is also coming off shoulder surgery and a dramatic loss of power last season.
Glaus for his part, looked lethargic in the field last year, suffering through heel and foot injuries that resulted in season ending surgery in September. Rosenthal mentions that while Glaus enjoys playing in Toronto, the turf in the Rogers Centre has caused more than it's share of wear and tear and he may be better suited to the natural grass at Busch Stadium.
In exchange for Glaus, the Blue Jays would receive a player whose career numbers at the plate are marginally better in almost every aspect (except for home runs). While he also has better foot speed and fielding, make no mistake, Rolen is a risk.
Ol' Scotty boy has missed 176 games over the last three seasons and injury worries are just as much, if not more of an issue as they were with Glaus.
With Lower Case X playing shortstop, the Jays now have the left side of an infield that won a World Series. Unfortunately, that was two years ago.
A best case scenario has a healthy Rolen making up for Eckstein's lack of defensive range and adding his higher OBP and speed to a lineup that struggled last season. A worst case scenario has me thinking about a John McDonald and Marco Scutaro platoon and wondering how Curtis Thigpen would transition to third base.
This move would also seem to fall in line with the Eckstein addition, in that Rolen is a gritty player. Heis playing style is that of the guys that get dirty and play hard visibly. I asked this question after the Jays new shortstop was signed and I'll ask it again. Is J.P. actually listening to those guys who phone into Wilner's radio show saying that the Jays need more heart?

That's fucked. When I posted mine it was definitely directly above the Sun thing. Let me see if I can flip these fuckers.
Alright, so I just deleted mine. Didn't really say anything anyway.
I must've started mine before you started yours, but finished mine after.
What do you think of this deal?
I'll post something about that shortly, I reckon.
This intrigues me. I enjoy Rolen, but he has three more years of big money left.
Does this maybe stink of HGH-hand washing by JP et al?
Jays have nobody coming soon at 3B, right? So three years is actually better for us than 2, esp because that 2 could be 1 if Glaus decided he'd had enough of turf and didn't use his option.
it's a deal pending physicals apparently
Globe link in sig
DO IT UP!!!!
glaus blows. i'm sick of watching him limp around the infield.
Glaus blows?
You're a fucking idiot.
i like glaus, but i'll take a healthy rolen any day ... healthy is the key part of that statement though
The thing is, Glaus probably would never have got healthy playing on the turf up here. . . maybe.
If that's the case, the Jays can lose on this deal (which I don't even think they do) and still win.
Plus, as scared as people are by Rolen's issues, it seems to me-- and a guy in the comments on MLB Trade Rumors-- that Rolen had the problem and the first surgery, it didn't heal right, and he had it fixed again.
A risk, yes, but I'm not nearly as concerned about Rolen's shoulder as I am Glaus's feet. Though maybe I'm an idiot.
So here's a question: If this trade is close with maybe the edge to STL (since they're getting a guy whose SLG was 130 points better on grass than on turf last year), how much of Rolen's contract would they need to pick up to make it an even deal for both sides?
Geez jess, a little harsh.
Even though you're right..
conflicting reports on (any?) money changing hands....will be interesting. I'll miss big Troy, he wasn't as bad defensively as portrayed.....a real terror on the basepaths though.
Problem is, he'll thrive on the grass at St. Loo, and the Dickie Griffins of the world will all say "See! JP is a fucking idiot!"
But they'll always say that. If they don't say that, something has gone terribly, terribly wrong.
You're right stoeten, once the fans stop whining, pigs are flying or something of the like. The Jays don't change a whole heap either way, (health pending of course). Perhaps the Jays know something we don't.
If you think Glaus sucks, you ARE a fucking moron. It'll be interesting to see how this all turns out. To be honest, I was never a big Rolen fan.
BTW, weak post by Wilner. Trying to hard. And the cheap shot at LaRussa is uncalled for. I'm saying Boo-urns
Kirby, I called you on it in Wilner's comments section, but I'll do it with more colourful language here...
How the fuck is it out of line to take shots at an asshole who got too shitfaced to say the alphabet or keep from passing out, and then got behind the wheel of a fucking car??? Fuck him. I have no idea how you can be all "leave the poor guy alone." He's lucky not to have killed anybody-- and I'm not even all self righteous about drunk driving. I can admit to having a beverage or two or three over the course of a night and then eventually driving home. But because I'm not a fucking retard, I wouldn't do it anywhere remotely close to being shitfaced! Watch the video-- the guy couldn't even say the alphabet. It's amazing! He's a fucking retard asshole and Wilner's shot at him is nothing compared to what he deserves to have said about him.
Yea, and Stoeten also wanted to say this:
"plus, anytime you insult my man-crush it hurts me as well. If you care at all about me you'll need to care about Wilner too. Mike, I hope you don't mind me fighting your battles for you . . . I love you and it needs to be done."
I said that with my eyes. It didn't need to be stated.
