Amateurs
I'm finding it difficult to express my feelings around the recent measures that Paul Godfrey and the Toronto Blue Jays are employing to stop the douche baggery that has been occurring in the 500 Level of Rogers Centre.
As the name of our blog infers, we really like to drink and we really like to watch baseball while we do it. In fact, we celebrate getting drunk and watching baseball on an almost daily basis on this site.
The idea that a number of pecker heads armed with a low tolerance for alcohol and the bravado of a heavy drinker can ruin that celebration and soil our name is frustrating to say the least. I don't want to sound over dramatic, but I'm beginning to understand what it's like for strict Muslims to be compared to terrorists, or Southern Baptists to the Ku Klux Klan.
While I'm normally against any policy that restricts freedom, I'm forced into supporting Godfrey's decision to make Twoney Tuesday tickets for non-alcohol seating only. I also hate the idea of physically searching people for alcohol, but I truly believe that if this isn't done, stopping alcohol sales wouldn't work alone.
Do you see what you've done, amateur drinkers? You've reduced me to not only agreeing with a reactionary Paul Godfrey, but also applauding the move to stop selling alcohol.
The key factor for me is that your "good time" should never give someone else a "bad time." And that's exactly what these ruckuses in the 500s are doing. Or as Mike Wilner more succinctly puts it, "People need to be free to have a good time at the game, but they also need to respect others’ rights to have a good time as well."
That right there is the difference between Drunk Jays Fans and drunk Jays fans. As much as we enjoy using alcohol to loosen up and cheer emphatically or drown losing sorrows, we would never presume to interfere with someone else's enjoyment of the game, and even in our drunkest state, we're mindful of that.
Another interesting take can be found on Neate Sager's Out of Left Field. Sager invited Andy Grabia to guest blog about his experiences as a Red Sox fan at the Home Opener, which now has him calling for total prohibition at Jays games.
Any baseball fan should expect a level of idiocy in Toronto on opening day. Honestly, a couple of clothed streakers and drunken insults slurred at Red Sox fans really isn't all that appalling. What bothers me much more are fights in the stands during an early season Tuesday night game against the Oakland Athletics.
Grabia levels a measure of blame for such antics at Godfrey and the Jays who for years have benefited monetarily from the sale of alcohol. While I agree that the Jays may have dropped the ball on security by expecting sixteen year old ushers to stop physical altercations, my finger wagging is directed at the individuals who are actually fighting in the stands.
Unless you're some sort of sociopath, no matter how young you are, you're still aware of a modicum of decorum that should dictate how you behave in certain situations. Those partaking in the drunken brawls are ignoring the wishes of everyone around them. While drunkenness may urge you toward certain behaviour, it doesn't alter your intentions, and should never be an excuse for your actions.
Obviously though, the real blame lies on things like the UFC, and violence in the media. Have you seen the video games that kids are playing these days.

Thanks for the link ... not sure if Andy was advocating a total ban but he was right on the money saying that the Jays are a bit two-faced
Great point about UFC... here we have the Rogers-owned team in the Rogers-owned stadium having problem with a bunch of yobs? Meantime, the Rogers-owned sports network is giving promiment play to UFC on TV and the website. It can't have it both ways.
I can't wait until UFC goes back under the dumpster where it belongs.
I blame the UFC under the most sarcastic of pretenses possible. Violence in the media is always the easy out, but history is filled with violence long before Quake or the UFC.
I don't think that you can really blame Godfrey or Rogers either. There's an age restriction on alcohol for a reason, and it allows its servers to presume some level of maturity amongst consumers.
Unfortunately, that assumption doesn't work at times, and you get "adult" aged people not acting very "adult" like.
Maybe I'm being naive, but I still blame the idiots for being idiots.
If you're going to blame anything it should be that damn rap music...
*sarcasm*
I blame a society in which personal freedoms are restricted!
Our forefathers did not build this great country with the intent . . .
All go fuck off. Fighting's been happening forever. People fight all the time.
Granted, things have been a little retarded over two games . . . but that is hardly a sample from which to make reactionary decisions. It's all a PR stunt and they can fuck off for that reason. Rogers was getting shit so they react with an over simplified solution to a societal problem.
Grow the fuck up, get some balls. Announce a few assault charges in the paper and whammo . .. you've demotivated the blood thirsty mouth breathers.
Beyond that, make sure your shit security force and the blues that are on hand react a little faster for fucks sake.
Don't tear down the playground and ruin recess becuse one kid gets hurt every ten years . . . it's not worth it to the other kids that use the playground.
While the move is PR friendly, I don't think it's strictly just that.
I think we'll see real results.

Somehow the folks at Page2 missed the Jays Towel Tosser home opener and Use the money you saved on $2 Tickets for Bail Tuesdays on their list of worst 08 baseball promotions.
Sorry for not hyperlinking the URL.
Oh ya and Fuck UFC and Fuck Marilyn Manson and Fuck Rap music and Fuck Alcohol at sporting events and Fuck everything else that makes people punch each other and shoot each other and do stupid stuff without thinking like write nonsensical run on sentences in the comment sections of blogs.
Wait - no just FUCK THE STUPID IDIOTS RUINING IT FOR THE REST OF US!
Yeah, there have been fights at the home opener since I can remember.
I was there and I seem to remember reading about you guys being there for the Jays schedule fridge magnet fucking fiasco.
I don't think this year has been any worse than the previous few years, but it's definitely starting to get tired. I had absolutely no interest in going to the home opener this year (first time in about 5 years) and this is exactly the reason.
I remember the absolute shame and embarrassment I felt when so called Jays fans rained magnets onto the field and boo'd various Jays throughout the game.
We have the worst fans in the league, and I haven't got any clue what to do about it. I can't lay any blame against the ownership, because if it weren't for our shitty fans, we wouldn't have any at all.
If you took all of the "pure" fans of baseball in all of Toronto, and put them into the SkyDome, I don't think you'd fill it.
Wilner blames the Leafs.
People don't care about violence when there's sex things to worry about. I'm in Paul Godfrey's boat... more streaking, less fighting.
Don't fuck shit up for the rest of us. It's a simple philosophy, but quite effective.
Honestly, the best solution is to not have the roving beer salesmen. Sell beer at concessions and don't sell to drunks. Is that so hard? is that not the model that the government imposes on bartenders?
The guys roving the stands seem more interested in unloading their burden than ensuring they're not dumping beer into raging lunatics.
getting rid of $2 tuesday's is the solution. why even give people the opportunity to come to a game and get shit-faced (it only takes 1 beer for these morons) for $10?
It's not the promotion it's the volume.
Let's say they're contending at some point this season and they approach 40,000 for most games . . . should their not be modifications in place to contain or prevent the behaviour?
How is ridding a 2$ promotion going to accomplish that?
Joe : I may have missed it, but have you given your NHL playoff predictions yet?
Keith Law: (1:12 PM ET ) I'm not familiar with this NHL.
Gold.
I blame it on the introduction of the TFC, and the glorification of hooliganism in the media (see The Real Football Factories on the Score, or any of the recent hooligan movies). The recent Scarborough train brawl reminded me of Green Street Hooligans. Fackin good film tho, mate. Shame these cunts try to live it.
i blame gladiator battles and smoke signals, personally. theyve proven themselves to be a slippery slope.
and, i propose everyone just gets baked in the 500s instead. doobie tuesdays, anyone?
I blame it on lack of women! If there were more women at games for these poor guys to take their aggressions out on, they wouldn't have to turn on each other. I think we can all agree that this is the case.
More Laydeez Nites, Godfrey! Don't just make it a one-off where mid-30's Moms take their best shot at getting dolled up for Alex Rios!
What a bad time for Alex to be engaged. He has the cougar market cornered. Hopefully he's better at cheating on his wife than Stray-Rod
"Those partaking in the drunken brawls are ignoring the wishes of everyone around them."
Um... have another listen to those YouTube clips, champ.
The 10% loud majority. Remember on Tuesday, when there is room to move away, people do.
Love Sager's blog but that Grabia piece was Toronto-phobic bullshit. It deserves a better response than that-- and than the one I put in the comments section on their blog, too-- but meh. I'm too busy go any deeper than a quick rant.
Fuck it. I'm just going to post my whole take on this nonsense. Because I can.
Did you hear Godfrey on with Chuck? What a douche. He mentioned that they asked a blog to take down a statement about how easy it is to party in the 500s because the only security up there are underaged girls ... who begin to look good after your fourth beer.
Any one know what blog that is?
Right, cause Boston doesn't have brain dead loogans. It's home of fucking HAAAVAAAD.
I prefer the Massholes over these lightweight clowns
Cutting off the booze in the 500s is a pretty lame choice, but really what else could they do?
It's not like a dry stadium is anything new, wasn't the EX dry?
I also blame KFC.
How about not serving drunken assholes more beer?
Is that not the sane solution?
The Ex was dry for the first several years but there was a ton of smuggling. They even sold sodas in pourable cartons.
soda in cartons?
I must be young...
Yeah, they called them family sized. It was waxed paper like they used back then with a spout like a milk carton. Probably about a litre and they gave you suspiciously cocktail sized cups with it. They new what they were selling.
I just want to say that I think the ad for "Beautiful Vietnam Girls seeking foreign men for marriage" is hilarious.
Oh, and fuck Godfrey. And fuck everyone who can't behave themselves while drunk.
I'm parkes and this here is friend Stoeten. Ten Dollah for the both of us, that's all my mom allows me to spend.
I've been reading this site for a couple weeks and I just wanted to say that I like it a lot. You guys are hilarious, opinionated and informed. I think it's good that you're unruly and vulgar but still sober enough to know when to draw the line.
Keep up the good work,
Paul
I don't understand the connection between "Toonie Tuesdays" and an increase in druken recklessness.
So someone says, "Hey its only two bucks to get into the game, with all the money we save let's get loaded."
Yet, its ususally only $9 to sit up there. The money they save only adds up to one watered down beer.
Is it the one beer that is causing all the problems?
FYI, I'm just going to assume that Paul from 3:48 is Godfrey.
Oh, and you should have SEEN the lineup at the Union Station liquor store on Tuesday.
The kids who were fighting weren't buying $10 beers, they snuck in $10 mickies and downed them in the bathrooms as quickly as possible; which is a recipe for this type of shit, downing a mickey of rye in 5 minutes is like liquid courage for these fuckers.
Increased security at the doors will help but it wont stop these kids from downing the mickeys on the way to the game...i forgot my original point, maybe cause I just downed a mickey of rye
Nope. Not me.
Bang on, Danimal. You going tonight? I can't get a straight answer out of people.
feeling like shit...I probably am not going, I kind of want to channel surf tonight, this is probably going to sound blasphemes on this site, but I kind of want to check out les canadiens...
what the fuck is "les canadiens"?
oh, that faggoty hockey team from Montreal. right.
Another interesting take can be found on Neate Sager's Out of Left Field. Sager invited Andy Grabia to guest blog about his experiences as a Red Sox fan at the Home Opener, which now has him calling for total prohibition at Jays games.
not sure if Andy was advocating a total ban
Nope. Not "calling" for that at all. Just saying it wouldn't bother me. But I know I'm in the minority, and I'm fine with that.
Love Sager's blog but that Grabia piece was Toronto-phobic bullshit
This is laughable. 200 people have been arrested at two baseball games in the past week, and I'm the one giving Toronto the black eye? Cmon, now.
If Godfrey thinks this shit is bad he's never been to a Bills game.
Wait'll that crowd starts showing up at Rogers Centre. They start drinking on Thursday for a Sunday game.
Word Skeeter. Upstate NY's love their alcohol. And hunting camouflages apparently.
200 tossed, not arrested.
All this fight talk reminds me of the South Park episode where Randy brawls at every game.
"Huh?!? Isn't this was America? I thought this was America. I can't stand up for myself??? Sorry. I thought this was America!!!"

I can still drink a quart of Monkey and still stand still.
Ol' C
Still?
