And Then That Happened...
OK... something's seriously wrong, because I laughed my ass off when Vernon bobbled that Kevin Youkilis single that cashed the winning run in tonight's game. Just too unbelievably typical of how things have gone for the Jays so far this year. Especially after getting absolutely fucking robbed by Pedroia only a few minutes earlier, after Scott Rolen once again showed why he's the greatest Blue Jay of all time.
I'm guessing that makes me a very, very big exception among Jays fans. It's just,... in times like these I can't help but be comforted by the wisdom of the refrain to the greatest song ever by a guy who djs at The Tap. . .
(The scene at the dump really brings it all home, FYI)
Feel better? No? Still full of hate? Yeah. Me too.
You know what else? Speaking of hate, I fucking hate Jonathan Papelbon and Dustin Pedroia. HATE!!! Fucking HATE them. Hate their fucking faces. Puke. Puke fucking fucking pieces of shit! Faaaack! Fucking pieces of shit put your arms down, stop looking at each other you stupid meat head douche fuck fucks! Fuck! Fucccccccck!!!!!!!!!
Hoooo! Deep breath... Pffffff.....
I dunno. What else can you even say about a game like that? My head is swimming, and alls I know for certain anymore is that I seriously hope Roy Halladay ripped the living shit out of every goddamn last one of those hitters after he went out there and busted his ass like that only to lose. Not that I think that sort of tirade would really change anything, of course, but goddamn those guys deserve an earful of the craziest Mormon, demonic, tongue-speaking shit Roy can come up with.
Except Scott Rolen.
I don't know what this fucking team did to anger the Baseball Gods, but holy fucking horse fucking fucking mucking fucking shit. They need to offer some rum to Jobu ASAP.
Uh... yeah. I'm sorry everyone. I guess I've got nothing but swearing and nonsense on this one (some might say that's all I've ever got), and I'd be willing to bet any Jays fan who watched tonight can reasonably take care of those sorts of things on his or her own. So I guess that's all I'll say...
(Honestly, though. We all knew by about the middle-sixth that they were gonna fuck it up, right?)
Awesome Paraphrased Wilnerism of the Night: "If the Blue Jays are like this even 40% of the year, they are going to be the worst team in the history of Major League baseball."
One More Thing...
I said this in the comments to the previous post, but just to be clear: please, even though it's absolutely, unquestionably, mind-bogglingly unacceptable that Vernon wasn't able to even make a throw to the plate on David Ortiz's winning run, Vernon didn't cost the Jays the game. What cost the Jays the game was letting Jon Lester get them out 24 times without putting a man on second.

44 rational and reasonable comments:
Fire JP...Fire JP. Let's all chant it in the Mormon demonic tongue.
It took you until the middle of the sixth to know? Wow, you might be even more optimistic about this team than I am.
Also the post made me laugh. So that's something.
How can you not smile when you see Jobu?
holy mindfuck....this post is pretty much exactly what I wrote in my last comment. posted comment, went to read Wilner, came back here, read this. weird vibe going on right now, dude.
Holy shit, Stoeten... Think of the F-Bomb counter over at The Mockingbird.
Frustration warranted though.
Great minds think alike, and so do you two on occasion.
I really, really hope Doc knows how much Jays fans adore him and feel bad for him after games like that.
Maybe the hitters are getting back at Doc for putting words in their mouths when they said there was a sense of urgency, when there actually wasn't one. Huh? Think about that.
What's the Jays' record since you changed your symbol, assholes?
Jesus Christ.
I've become numb to the whole losing thing I think. After that hit, I wasn't really pissed at all. In fact, I think I was kind of expecting it to happen. I just thought of the minor positive of Halladay keeping his CG streak going, and moved on. I guess a lack of expectations can do that to a person.
And really, I don't think any loss for me can get much worse than what happened on Friday night, especially when I was actually in the away team's ballpark, watching Eckstein lose a fucking game because he couldn't catch the damn ball.
I think that wetspot on Vernon's crotch was vaginal discharge
Really enjoyed the highlights on SportsCenter this morning when it showed Halladay screaming "You've gotta be fucking shitting me"...
Un fucking real... get it together Jays...
As ugly as Pedroia is, Youkilis is 100000000000000 times worse. I can't even look at the TV while he's batting, too much ugliness.
Bravo... brav-effing-vo. Right on with Vernon Wells. As Wilner said last night, no centerfielder in baseball could have caught that.
It's amazing that the commentators (both radio and TV) were playing this up as a great "pitchers duel". A caller on JaysTalk summed it up perfectly "I would have been ok with this loss if it was against Beckett". Right on... who is this Lester guy anyway? He's the number 5 starter, Jays had Halladay on the mound. Bottom line... we should have got more than two hits off this guy.
On a positive note: last night, Doc became the first pitcher in 20 years (the last being Tom Candiotti) to have 4 complete games in the month of April... way to go Doc.
vernon couldn't see the ball for all the semen in his eyes
Yet another kick straight to the scroat. Ugh.
As per all the Vernon bashing,he definitely could have played better than that.Wilner is spinning pure and simple. In a 0-0 game you have to play like it's the last game of the World Series!Yeah,Wilner no centerfielder could make that play!OK?WRONG!If the Jays actually make the playoffs, whoever is the manager is(Gibby or Showalter) has to have a talking to the guys who have never played in the playoffs.Vernon needs to know that that brat Pedroia chumped him!AND HE HAS A RING ALREADY!This lax play in the field does show the lack of hunger on his part.I see Melky here in NY contort his body and giving it his all to catch a ball and then throw out the runner. That is another reason why Vern's play in the Ninth looks so weak.
The Cussin Mormon has a right to be pissed off.Where was the offense? This offense made Phil Hughes look like Cy Young!Phil Hughes sucks right now and he hasn't even won a game.Lester is very good, but at the level of Doc?No way!Bad job of hitting by the Jays. You can't win games by having the offense fall asleep.Get Barroid JP because at the very least it shows that you care more about the fans than Bud!
The Rays ended a 6 game winning streak.Do you honestly think that this team can even have a 3 game winning streak and then not go on a 5 game losing streak?Gibby has to go.There is something fundamentally wrong with Wilner's statement about not playing smallball! When a team is starving for production and the score is tied like in the Yankee games or the Ranger extravanga ,YOU PLAY SMALLBALL OR ANY BALL TO WIN!PERIOD!That Ranger game was an example of the Jays suckiness. When the game was 0-0 in the ninth,I knew that Boston would get the job done.Because they were playing the Jays in their own backyard and that always favors the home team. When I was listening to the Jays-Rangers late inning screwup fest,I knew that they would screw it up!Is it Gibby's fault?Yes,partially. He's not motivating his team or doesn't have a gameplan to win these one run games.JP got rid of Reed,Thomas,Glaus etc and added certain players. For whatever, these additions and subtractions haven't worked.JP also gave the Fieldwalker,Wells a gazillion bucks as well.He criticized the Giants for signing Rowand, what was Wells signing?A Triumph?
Last but not least, blame goes all around. But there is still time to stop the flood.Get Bonds ,fire Gibby, fire JP,the team needs to do something because this current situation isn't working ESPECIALLY OFFENSIVELY!It is incumbent on the manager and the GM to formulate a plan to not lose these 1 run games. They had an excuse for being so bad last year they had all those injuries, but now?FIRE GIBBY!
Hey, did any of you guys catch the game last night?
A Moe Berg reference?
Right off the lameness scale.
Absolutely terrible approaches at the plate last night. Top 4th, Wells walks on 5 pitches. Hill swings at the next pitch and fouls out. Top 7th, Hill walks on 4 pitches. Overbay swings at the next pitch and flies out. Why make it easy for a pitcher who has walked more batters than he's struck out?
And I'm getting sick of watching Shannon's feeble swings (5th, 1 pitch, 1 swing, 2 outs).
This team does not deserve our love. This blog is somewhat funny and entertaining, but the Jays are neither. They are overpaid, underachieving losers who give every appearance of not giving a shit. It may not be Vernon's fault that the game was lost, but we have a right to expect a lot more from this guy than we have been getting the last season+, both in the field and at the plate.
TPOH!
"at the very least it shows that you care more about the fans than Bud"
Why would JP care about anything but winning . . . and second, he should care more about Bud. Fact is, if he wins the fans are happy but that is simply a byproduct of winning.
I feel like it's 1995-1998 all over . . . 1999-2004 weren't bad because I didn't watch as much because it hurt too much, haha. But I tell you, these last 4 years have been bad.
Vernon is getting paid what 18 million a year,is he worth even half that? And JP thought that Rowand was a bad signing!Rowand would have made that throw play at the plate! He was partially to blame because that type of lazy and lax play is inexcusable for any player. The fans have big expectations and the team is not meeting them.
Down here in the NYC there are radio personalities who said that the Rays are better the Jays and I Boohooed them.Know what.... they might be right! The Rays are patient hitters and they can tear the cover off the ball. The Jays so far have hit like a middling NL team. It's a joke really.Doc pitchs his heart out for 4 complete games and what happens?3 losses?Yeah,Gibby messed with the lineup but that doesn't seem like it's enough.Denbo?I saw him with the Yankees and people like Denbo and Rick Downs were not the problem but Torre the manager was. When Denbo was with the Yankees Torre waited for the 5 run home run!He gave up scratching out runs and playing long ball was the order of the day.Denbo knows the whole Yankee philosophy of being patient but it seems that judging from last night some players don't get it!
Wilner is right that pitching is not the problem but offense. There is one solution:Barroid. He might be the spark plug they need. The Tigers started off the season as being asleep at the plate and then Granderson came back and now they are rising from the ashes. The Tigers' record is still not that great BUT they had an absolutely crappy start. The Jays need a spark plug like that.Barroid is probably it!
off topic, you know what I really fucking HATE, by the way, is that homoerotic little "let's gather around the guy who scored at home plate, put our arms around each other, and do little bunny hops joyously" dance party celebration, that the Sox treated us to last night.
If the Jays ever do win a game in the bottom of the 9th, I hope they don't resort to that lameness. I figure if Scotty Rolen scores the run, he'll coldcock the first guy who tries it.
Yeah, good point. Like did they win game 1 of the ALCS or something? If the Sawks celebrate like that after every game, Big Papi and Manny are going to need some oxygen tanks on standby afterwards.
I blame Jon Lesterine and Dustin Pedrophilia for our loss.
Jon Lester is a good pitcher. His stats show a pitcher who is good at missing bats. It's absolutely no surprise that he practically no hit the Jays. I would call BS if it were Dice-K pitching because then you have reason to be pissed at the hitters for choking against a soft tossing nibbler.
I thought we had it in the top of the 9th but no... I thought we'd get out of the bottom of the 9th but no... I didn't think Doc would loose 3 straight CG in a row...
At least this wasn't the 7th game of the ALCS or something equally dramatic... There's a chance that tonight will be better so I'm just gonna go with it and hope for the best. That's all I can do as a fan anyway.
As someone who has been battling leukemia for over a year, and will be for the foreseeable future, I guess Lester should be some kind of inspiration to me. And yet, I can't get past the fact that he plays for the Sox, and hate his guts. When he came back, I remember reading an article that said his cancer had an 85% cure-rate...and instead of thinking "good for him," I thought "what a sissy." I wouldnt' think that about anyone who doesn't play for the Sox(and probably the Yanks)
I'm not sure what this says about me as a person.
Apologies if someone has already dug this up, but are there any more stat-intensive fans out there who know the last time a pitcher lost three straight starts when he threw a complete game? The more I think about this, the more mind-boggling it becomes.
Ack, I agree.
Everyone else, I appreciate how into this team you all are, and am right there with your frustrations, but please try not to let it slip into ridiculous like Vernon's play is lax therefore he's not a winner, or that the Jays are a bunch of losers, or that this season has gone down the tubes. It's just... that's not remotely close to right. Or more aptly (and I know you're going to hate to hear this), it's way too early to say so. Way, way too soon to judge. If you extrapolate the way their playing now over the course of the season and OF COURSE it's over, it's done, fuck it, they're terrible. But there's really no reason to expect them to keep playing like this. There just... isn't. These guys have histories. It's a very solid team on paper. There is still absolutely no reason to say that this team can't make the playoffs. It sure as fuck doesn't feel like it, but it's ridiculous to say that they can't. They will play better. There is no way they can play worse. I mean, it's totally fair to say that these guys are playing like absolute shit-- they fucking are!-- but you just can't write off a seaon after a terrible, awful, bullshit, unbelievably frustrating month.
In 6 months, I hope we can look back and say that one inning - those 15 excruciating minutes - was the low point of the season.
Fuck that would be great.

The season is not over yet but some little things can be seen by these close losses.Vernon is not entirely to blame for the loss, but he is a part of it.He just seems to not be such a hard charger in the field.Forget about stats and sabremetrics,I'm talking about actual scouting or watching the games.Does Vernon look like a great centerfielder this year? NO!So regardless of stats perception goes a long way.Like I said the Milkyman here in NYC playing for the Yanks screws up,but he looks like he's trying even when he does.In essence,Vernon doesn't have that extra edge that makes a winner.Sorry,he needs to start playing to his contract and prove that he's worth it.When and if the Jays do win it all(which they still have a chance to do),that's when he gets a break.
The season is by no means over, but the way that this team is hitting and executing in tight games sucks! The Birdbrains of Baltimore are playing better fundamental ball than the Jays! They are a AAAA plus squad and they are playing better. On paper, the Jays are better than the Rays and Os BUT games are not played by sabremetricians because if that were true with the Jays hitters and their team ERA from last year are the team to beat. The Jays are not far off,but there are some very discouraging signs from this month of April. They still have problems in 1 run games. They made Phil Hughes, who imploded last night for the umpteenth time, look like Roger Clemens! The bats are not clicking..... what is this?A cause for hope?
Look JP can try Barroid no matter what.F**k BUd!Get some more fannies in the seat at the Centre.I live down in the NYC area and people can't get a freaking ticket to a Yankee game! It's incumbent on Godfrey,Rogers, and JP to fix this mess because the fans deserve it.I'm also sick of hearing radio personalities who are Yankees and Mets fans always say that they'll believe the Jays in the playoffs when they see it.It's really disheartening to see people down here act like they are a never was, rather than a contender. They really don't respect the Jays down here because they haven't been in the playoffs in 15 years blah, blah ,blah. What I would like to see is the Blue Jays on top of the AL East and the Sux and the Tankees not make it to the playoffs. Then the Yankee homers will shut up.They are in awe of the Angels and the Tigers ,Indians, and the Red Sox because they beat them in the playoffs. No matter what, they need to play better not for thses dickheads ,but for themselves and the fans.
Ultimately,it is getting late early,folks..........
It's confusing as to why a dude who posted a 145 OPS+ last season hasn't been given a job yet. I don't think Bud has anything to do with it... mostly for antitrust reason... I think the owners/GMs think he will draw too much negative publicity. It's not on what he did but on what could happen to his image over the next few years. If its proven that he lied in his grand jury testimony the media circus that will ensue will be nothing short of legendary.
The leftie power bat is, in my mind, the biggest need for this lineup. Signing Bonds would be great but we have a leftie power bat in the minors on a fast track to a possible debut next season. I doubt Bonds wants to play so much that he will take a 1 year or small deal. I wouldn't be surprised if it comes out that the Jays offered a 1 year deal with an option for '09 that Bonds refused.
But, it's early yet for teams to go and make serious changes to their team. The Jays dumped Thomas because they had fan favorite Lind mashing in AAA so changes were cheap and minimal. If Bonds is unemployed in a month, then the gig is up... The Yankees could always sign him to some $22 million pro rated contract.
Brattain's point to that the other day was perfect: A playoff team with Barry will do far better at the gate and in the ratings than a mediocre one without him.
NY Anonymous: Thing is, Vernon has always looked lazy like that. It’s just his way, and in the past it’s what has made a lot of people not realize what a great fielder he is/was, because he’d make it look effortless when he got to crazy difficult balls, unlike, say, Jim Edmonds, who’s all flat out sprawling and diving and obvious. So, for that reason I think you have to take the perception of VW now with a grain of salt.
Worrying about Bonds ruining team chemistry, when this team has no chemistry to speak of, is pretty funny.
Not sure this team has much of a choice - they are pretty much killing their season in the first month, while the best hitter that's ever lived is sitting out there waiting to play.
How can you say that? Steroids gave him a fantastic batters eye and such a quick powerful swing.
But… it’s not like they don’t realize Bonds would be a huge help to this lineup. Ownership won’t let them touch him, most likely because of bad publicity or being indebted to Selig for equalization payments. I think that, even though baseball is a multi-billion dollar industry, those payments were enough to provoke some major indebtitude. Plus, it’s not like the Jays are the only team who could use him. The A’s signed Frank Thomas, the Tigers lost Gary Sheffield, the Rays are actually playing Shitske, the Mariners Jose Vidro. The Jays may be the most obvious suitor, but it’s just not, not, not, not happening unless Uncle Ted has a really quick change of heart. And honestly, a) who knows if Bonds will be Bonds, especially without spring training and not having swung a bat for who knows how long, and b) as crazy as it sounds, do they really need him? Yes, they ABSOLUTELY need him this week, but right now they are playing historically bad baseball. Like, unfathomably terrible anemic bullshit baseball. Baseball so bad that there is no WAY that this isn’t the absolute worst that this team could possibly ever play. So… to bring in that kind of baggage as a quick fix… for one thing it’s a terrible message to the players and fans—and maybe that’s fine—but it’s also a terrible message to Uncle Ted. It’s a pure desperation move, and JP would basically be tying himself and his career to Bonds, and that’s got to be a scary thought for any GM, except for Brian Sabean, who must have pictures of Peter Magowan fucking babies or something. If they move for Bonds, that’s it, JP is toast if it backfires. Right now, maybe he thinks he still has some cards to play that could keep him employed next season. Just thinking out loud though…
The fact is that: a) Bonds likely won't be signed here because it's such a big nuissance and pill to swallow for Rogers to deal with. (ps: I hate the argument that he has upcoming trials...thats BS cause it has been delayed to next year AND you can write language in the contract) and b) the Jays can't cut it without him. YOu think playoff teams play "historically bad baseball" .500 clubs do.
Anyway, it's just not gonna happen.
Yes, sometimes playoff teams play historically bad baseball.
Actually, a lot of times.
Wilner went over it the other day, and I'm not going to look up the actual numbers, but check out how well the Yankees, Rockies and Philles were doing last year around this time. There are plenty, plenty more examples. '89 Jays anyone?
The Jays are not the Yanks,Rockies or Phillies of last year! The Phillies were always on the periphery of the playoffs every year for the last couple until they broke through this last season. That was a feisty bunch of players. The Yanks always get off to crappy starts under Torre the last few years, that is a typical Yankee start to the season under Torre.Crappy first third, then an express train to the playoffs. The Yankees have been in the playoffs for the last 12 years straight. As for the Jays, they haven't been missing the playoffs by a game , have been knocking on the playoffs ,or have been in the playoffs for years! That is a big difference. The sad thing is ,they have a mediocre offesive lineup in a division where the Rays look comparatively like the '27 Yankees!
The 89 Jays didn't have to face the 2008 Red Sox for the division!Or even the 2008 Yankees.Big difference.Sorry for being cynical but this bad start is a very bad omen for the season. The season is not over, but prepare for the worst!Or they could be the Rockies! That's the good part of your example!Rock on,Jays!
There are playoff teams that have played historically bad baseball and still done well. Hell, even Jays playoff teams have done it.
Look at the 1993 Jays. From June 30 to July 17 they went 2-14. They were swept by the Royals, lost two of three to the White Sox, were swept by the Rangers, and then lost two of three to the Royals. Shit happens. It's the teams that overcome that shit that go places... For the 1993 guys, they overcame their crappy stretches with lengthy winning streaks.
A long winning streak would turn things around nicely right now. Or a few mini-streaks. This team is going to have to play some good baseball, that's for sure, but it's not unreasonable to believe that they can do so. It's tough right now because they've been so crappy lately that it's hard to have faith that they're just not all useless.
Tell Moe Berg to quit spinning plates and pick up a Strat again. Keep the Aqua Net chicks at Zanzibar though.
