Pregame Festivities: Rios and Hill Sign, Alomar Ascends, Jays Get the Blues

I'm going to be completely honest with you... I had a post all written up where I was going to shit all over the Jays for delaying the announcement of the Alex Rios contract until right before their home opener. Seeing as the terms of the deal had been public knowledge for over a week (yeah, it was exactly what we thought: $65m for six years, plus a $15m option for 2015), it seemed kind of seriously pointless and hokey. Didn't it?

Then, almost as though they knew a huge, steaming loaf was about to come down on their somewhat muppet-like heads, the Jays went and slapped the boner out of my mouth with a second boner, sneaking in the announcement that Aaron Hill has also reached an agreement. His new deal is for four years, $12m, plus a rare three option years in 2012, 2013 and 2014 (Club options, FYI). So... alright. Good on you, Jays. You win this round.

ANALYSIS: I'm still sober enough, I think, to add a few words about these two contracts, which I guess would be: Boooiiiiing! and Double-Booooiiiiiing!

Two really solid contracts for JP's resume right here. Both guys are getting security in exchange for giving up free agent years for what appear to be under-market prices. The Hill options are quite interested, in that the Jays won't be going year to year deciding whether to pick up an $8m option on him, but instead will come to the point of choose either one year at $8m, two at $16m or three at $24m-- so I'm told.

Basically, from a fan's perspective, these are very, very difficult deals not to like.

Get There Early To Spit Cheer on Roberto!
The Jays have asked fans to get to Rogers Centre for 6:40 p.m. tonight, so that there will be a full house for the celebration of Roberto Alomar's career, as his name is (finally) placed on the Level Of Excellence.

It's a long overdue honour for the franchise's best player and the first man who'll enter the Hall of Fame wearing a Jays cap. But... maybe it's a little understandable that they let this one bake a while longer than the other. I mean, perchaps it would have happened sooner if Robbie had picked, say... any other city in which to spit on umpire John Hirschbeck and then claim that he was a racist and making bad calls because he was bitter over the death of his son. Y'know... just maybe.

Anyway, let's all forget that... and let's also forget the way he turned into a six year old girl the day David Cone got traded. . . Or the happy little incident with the female acquaintance who loaded up her ol' .22 and made her way to the SkyDome Hotel with the intention of murdering him and then killing herself. (She was from Port Hope, give her a break.)

But holy shit, let's not forget Robbie's mantastic quote on the subject: "I'm not scared. When it's time for you to die, you die, no matter what."

Awesome!

Hmmm. Anywho, I guess you sort of can't think of Alomar without remembering all the baggage. But, not to get all sentimental or anything, what say we cheer the hell out of him anyway tonight? (This means you too, Massholes.) Who's with me?

Blue Debut
If you're anything like me (what the hell do you think this rash is?), you'll be so drunk by the start of tonight's ballgame that you might not quite have the mental capacity to figure out what the hell is going on down on the field. So let me give you one tip that will almost certainly save you from undue stress:

You're not having a stroke, and the alcohol poisoning has not started screwing with your rods and cones (yet). Those really are your 2008 Toronto Blue Jays down there in the fruity blue uniforms.

Wilner says that Rios has a "beautiful" finacee. Let's move from a PG to an R rating here...anyone seen pictures of her? Nude preferably but clothed will do.

That Hill option is interesting, 3 years but the jays must decide all at once how many of those years they're going to pickup and the salary is predetermined.

Good deal for the jays because either (a) hill keeps developing and they have him for under market value or (b) he regresses and they simply don't exercise the option or (c) he stays where he is and is an above average second baseman.

I'm not sure how good a deal it is for Hill (ok I guess), but still he has no leverage if his game goes down hill due to injuries/herpes/alcoholism etc.

I'm glad for Robby. They should put Roy up there now too. Then John Olerud.

Lloyd "the barber" Moseby said...

That is one of the more mantastic quotes of all time.

Roberto Alomar is the best 2nd baseman of all time. Discuss.

Fuck you Joe Morgan.

why any of these guys get married now I have no clue. Go the King Carlos route, ho it up in your 20s and then get married in your mid-30s. Enjoy the benefits of being young, rich and single. No one gets their feelings hurt. No one needs a prenup. I don't know for sure if Delgado ho'd it up (those pesky Hazel Mae rumours), but for arguments sake, let's say he did. He did get married late though.

And holy shit, Robbie, this is intense: "I'm not scared. When it's time for you to die, you die, no matter what."

One of the best ballplayers ever, let alone for the Jays.

Joanna said...

Oh and Alex? Humpheries might want to slather you in A1 sauce, but at least no one has shown up wanting to shoot you.

Humphries is drunken rink ho. The girl kills teh sexy for me. She's like a female John Gallagher.

Yuck

Thom said...

ew hazel may, disgusting and a terrible broadcaster. I am not against women in the booth or announcing etc... I fully support it BUT GET COMPITENT PEOPLE. aka avoid jamie campbell

Justin Holmes said...

It's easier to forgive Robbie Alomar when you look at what a shitty umpire Hirschbeck is. Remember that July '05 weekend series when he fucked the Jays first on a Towers tag at first and then a Zaunie-blocked plate against the Rays?

Horseshit, Hirschbeck, and that's aside from his better known body of work. Even worse you got me thinking Alomar isn't a jackass for spitting on you.

Ian H. said...

Wow - what a day in Jays news. If they win, that will be the cherry on the bonerrific sundae!

SHK said...

Oh boy do I miss Hazel Mae.

Jay said...

Hazel Mae was a dog; I don't know how all this overrating of female broadcasters started. She looked good in comparison to Jim van Horne, I will only give her that.

yer mama said...

I just shat and cleaned the pipes put on some wind pants with no underpants and I'm ready to relax and enjoy the fuckin game! I got loaded last night and was in a real bad mood after the game and started an altercation at the local hole. Faggits...

OH MY GOD THAT'S PAUL BEESTON'S MUSIC!

RaoulDuke said...

Haha Beeston, even. Jays are pulling out all the stops tonight.

Someone needs to sort out the booing Masshole fans.

j.d. said...

I hope they let Alomar know they were going to usurp his night with the Paul Beeston induction. Even if they did I think it's kind of classless. (Nothing against Beeston but c'mon).

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure what they expected with that ticket sale to Sox fans. So dumb.

Ian H. said...

Yeah, the Beeston induction kind of overshadowed Alomar's - did't it?

J.R said...

Yep, it seems like they hi-jacked the ceremony. That Beeston thing is equivalent of being set up on a blind date but not being told. wtf.

j.d. said...

Not sure why but I'm really pissed at way this was done. I think Godfrey is the stupidest fuck. Am I being unreasonable? Let Alomar have his night. He deserves it. What a shitty thing to do.

j.d. said...

That conductor guy looks really insane. I'm scared.

Anonymous said...

Did I miss the Alomar ceremony? I had to go to the beer store, y'know.

yer mama said...

look at the big colored fellow in the back singin. is that the big hurts kid?

Anonymous said...

The conductor looks like a gay serial killer

J.R. said...

Where's Tiny Tim?

yer mama said...

If one of the Yankers or Blue Sax died would anyone be upset? I wouldn't. Is that wrong?

j.d. said...

I know it's the third (and last I promise) time I've said the same thing but that Beeston thing is really making me upset. I actually think I'm embarassed.

Jay said...

Yeah j.d., I kind of agree with you but people at the Dome seemed blissfully unaware that the whole thing was taking place anyway (is it 3/4 full of Massholes or what??). Fucking MAKE SOME NOISE ASSHOLES.

Anonymous said...

j.d.

Every time they've done the level of excellence thing it's been two people. It's like how the Hall of Fame does it.

j.d. said...

anonymous,

Didn't know that. So I guess that information makes me feel a bit better but I'm not sure I'm on board with that format. HOF is for honouring an entire league. I can't believe that there are so many Level of Excellence inductees that they can't do them one at a time. Plus there was no mention of two inductees ahead of time to prepare unstable sissies like me for the shock. PLUS Alomar did look a little deflated, I thought, which suggest to me he wasn't even aware.

J.R. said...

Yeah J.D., I'm embarassed as well, but I expected to be. I just thought it would be in the form of the Jays giving Alomar a lame crystal whale or an Inuit statue. Not to completely upstage the guy with sneak ceremony for a former executive.

RaoulDuke said...

The good:
-Marcum is on, son!
-Jamie Campbell exponentially less gay for the opposing team than is Rod Black

The Bad:
-Alomar being completely upstaged by a twice as long ceremony for Beeston. I mean fuuuck...that was embarassing.

Anonymous said...

Hopefully Alomar just rips Godfrey in the 3rd inning.

RaoulDuke said...

I just noticed that Zaun's sporting the dip. Fucking A.

And Scutaro is going to break Henderson's record at this rate.

RaoulDuke said...

It would be kind of funny (but not really) if Beeston elbowed his way into this interview after 1 out.

Anonymous said...

CATCH THE TASTE!

yer mama said...

i love chewing the tobacco! thats the shit that puts in your ass

j.d. said...

Hey does anyone remember Alomar's McCain Punch commercials? Those where the best!

"Hey Roberto. What's the best pitcher you every faced?"

"The one with McCain Punch"

J.R. said...

Yep he would catch a can of concentrated juice in his glove.

Anonymous said...

How long has Marcum been wearing the mouth guard?

yer mama said...

he had it on during the spring. hes pitching like a prince tonight! pretty stuff

j.d. said...

WTF is with Shaun Halladay?

Ian H. said...

I hope Ramirez hits a long fly ball to centre, and he does his celebration dance - only to have V-Dub catch the fly ball. God, that's why I hate Ramirez. Celebrate AFTER you know you hit a dinger.

yer mama said...

rays are up 5-0 on the yankers. kennedy bounced after 2.1 with 5R. giggle giggle

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Marcum is looking really sharp tonight, really hitting his spots.

Dare I say, he's starting to remind me of David Cone. He doesn't bust anyone up but mixes it beautifully with good control.

RaoulDuke said...

Shaun Marcum is King.

And if Lowell had been running as scrappily as Eckstein he would have been safe.

yer mama said...

check that on kennedy...6ER 4BB in 2.1IP. Holy balls! i hope he doesn't die

Anonymous said...

I'd say Marcum reminds me more of Stieb but that's more of his throwing motion as opposed to the way he pitches and demeanor.

yer mama said...

cone threw harder when he was with the jays with an electric slider. his style reminds me more of maddux. mixing all of his pitches for strikes and controlling the zone very well without being overpowering. now he just needs 300 more wins

Anonymous said...

Stairsy!

Fat fuckin Matt! atta boy chubs!

RaoulDuke said...

Rios earning his extension right there. 2-0.

yer mama said...

Apparently they have to interrupt our baseball to give away a car but can't find any attractive people to give it to

yer mama said...

what a fuckin spazzoid pukalis is. i wish someone would just shoot him right now. i know it would probably end the game but the world would be better for it and we wouldn't have to watch him prance around like a fairy with a shit on his face

Anonymous said...

I know he's not in the same stratosphere as a player, but fuck Scutaro just looks like Molitor up there tonight.

Anonymous said...

I know Sam Cosentino....gotta ask him how hammered that Sullivan kid was.

RaoulDuke said...

FUCK YOU MASSHOLES

Anonymous said...

Fuck! Not scoring overbay from second on two hits! That's costly, left Hill on first for the DP too.

Damn you PEVEY!

good god damn plate appearance by eck. fuck he's gritty! although he should have taken 3rd on stewarts single off pedroias glove.

holy balls i thought were fucked with thomas up with 2 outs and the big fucker came through.

RaoulDuke said...

And Johnny Mac is in now too, sweet.

you know watching that bunt, they had a shot at aaron at 2nd. those bunt-lovers assume that deciding to bunt is a guarantee to move the runner up. it's actually pretty hard to put down a good sac bunt, and the upside is just about 0....

What are the necklaces everyone seems to be wearing? They look like surfer-dude charms.

they are League's old anal beads

RaoulDuke said...

Holy fuck Eck, I might have to stop making fun of your miniature nature. 6-3!

RaoulDuke said...

Now it's time for Accardo to earn his stripes.

j.d. said...

Since I know Stoeten is at the game and, therefore, not able to tell me to "fuck off" right now I can boldly say that Eckstein is getting the job done and I love how he sprinted to first base after his walk.

RaoulDuke said...

Eck got it right this game, but that first series left a lot to be desired.

yer mama said...

parkes just ran on the fuckin field!

Joanna said...

parkes and stoeten on the field!

RaoulDuke said...

I love this team right now. I'm also drunk. I don't know if there's any relation.

P.S. the Dome out-cheered the massholes tonight by a large margin. Kudos to them.

yer mama said...

i'm mildly drunk and i can say that the fucking pitching is quite fucking good. we are only a few pitches from having a team era around 2.00 after four games against the skanks and the sax. 4 quality starts in 4 games and solid bullpen. a few more dongs would be nice

omurchu said...

Half of the callers to jays talk are calling complaining about drunks. Stoeten, Parkes: good work gentlemen (and to all those who attended).

Just got back from the game, and *holy shit*, what a crowd.

Looks like the Jays enjoyed the crowd too. God damn. Why can't Toronto get that into baseball every night. They didn't even chant "we want pizza" like a bunch of dickwad Raptors fans or anything!
