Numbers With A Bullet

Because most of our lives are sad shells of what a normal life should be, we spend an inordinate amount of time arguing dull details about the Blue Jays. One such argument that erupted today was caused by a quick look at the OPS + of this year's Toronto Blue Jays in comparison to their career OPS +.

Mocking the excuse that the Blue Jays are a good hitting team that simply isn't hitting well right now, the results of the comparison showed that almost all of the Jays OPS + is at a similar level this season as it has been throughout their career.

Many readers immediately hypothesized that this was the result of higher than career average OBPs in combination with lower than career average SLGs.

Well, let's look a bit further. Here is a comparison in points between the Jays lineup this season versus their career norms in AVG/OBP/SLG.

Gregg Zaun +.011 / +.011 / -.053
Lyle Overbay -.016 / +.005 / -.078
Aaron Hill -.005 / -.003 / -.024
Scott Rolen +.006 / -.015 / -.028
David Eckstein -.039 / -.035 / -.039
Shannon Stewart -.049 / -.038 / -.115
Vernon Wells .000 / +.017 / -.038
Alex Rios -.027 / -.013 / -.070
Matt Stairs +.018 / -.020 / -.032
Marco Scutaro .000 / +.057 / -.061

American League (this year vs. last year) -.012 / -.009 / -.026

Conclusion:

The entire team has come down with a case of First Year Alex Rios Disease or David Eckstein's grittiness has rubbed off, rendering them unable to hit the ball out of the infield.

even worse is that they've all turned into John McDonald with RISP (and that's not even exaggerating, sadly).

but, in general, LESS STATS and MORE GORDON RAMSAY PHOTOSHOP, please.

from eyeballing it, it does seem there slugging is shitty compared to what they should be doing.

What are all those numbers and shit for? Shit, man. That's shitty shit.

My brain hurts.

AL SLG: .397

For this late in the season, that's fucking retarded.

Anyone who has watched the Jays play this year could have told you they ain't slugging. I think a part of it is this "uber patience" we've brought in. I'm not saying let's go all Vladimir McFreeSwingy (although it did work out for the gloveless one last night) but there's a fine balance that the Jays aren't finding right now.

Hey Andrew, whoever that "Al" guy is, the Jays could sure use him!

Difference in AL between this year and last.

-.012/-.009/-.026

I don't know about blaming uber patience. What about the Red Sox?

Godzilla and Darrell Ratsnester for AJ.

Andrew said...

Yep, blame them.

Jer said...

I try to blame the redsox for half of my day's problems (global warming for the other half)

Dustin Parkes said...

I'm the same way, but I also blame global warming on the Red Sox, so it all comes back to them eventually.

The thing that amuses me is that the only guy on the team batting over .300 is Joe Inglett.

Actually that's not so much amusing as it is incredibly frustrating.

The thing that amuses me is that Parkes is using numbers while Stoeten is conceding the season.

What's next? Bergkamp going to a baseball game?

Making bets that involve not drinking?

Nice stats Parkes.
I was just either too lazy, or too lazy to actually look up these stats for a Blog comments section.

WE WANT BARRY! WE WANT BARRY!

If I win the Super 7 today, I will get Jays jerseys with "Bonds" on the back and hand them out to whoever wants them at the game.
