What The Hell?
Holy shit!?! I was just checking out the lineups for tonight's game between the Jays and the A's, and I totally noticed something. . .
Remember Frank Thomas? The slow guy who used to play here? No... ? Um... kinda big? Didn't swing at much? Little bit of pop? Hall of Famer? No? Um... the black guy?
Yeah, him!
Well-- hang on for a serious mindfuck-- he's now playing for the A's!
That's gotta be a little weird for the Jays, huh? Like... whooa-ahhhh! We use to totally be teammates with that dude. Dude!
And... scene.
(Seriously, we couldn't have at least mentioned this before the series started? No? How about the intense, nine-game, potentially season-defining road trip the Jays have started on? No? Not even that? Hmmm. OK...)

16 rational and reasonable comments:
Apparently it's also his birthday today. I hope AJ gives him a nice fastball between the numbers on his back.
There are clearly more important things to discuss, like some random guy taking bong hits, Ted Rogers birthday and dental care. Squeezing in a little baseball commentary would have been incredibly difficult, and quite frankly, unnecessary.
Burnett has 5 K's through 2. 1-0 bad guys.
I don't come here for baseball commentary, I come here for drunken depressed gut-spilling.
Seriously though, the instant Jamie Campbell just did what he just did I had to run to DJF to be the first to say: Jamie Campbell, you are a douchebag.
(He actually chanted "Mar-co, Scu-ta-ro (clap clap clap-clap-clap)")
I wish we still had Frank. I was doing some research on him for my post on the subject earlier today, and came up with the following:
Thomas with the A's: .315/.415/.506
Jays in May: .250/.338/.360
Thomas in May: .348/.429/.561
Our designated hitters since he left: Matt Stairs (.267/.337/.407) and Shannon Stewart (.263/.364/.263.).
Their replacements in left field: Brad Wilkerson (.179/.242/.304) and Kevin Mench (.136/.208/.136).
Now, granted those are some pretty small sample sizes, but I would much rather have Frank belting the ball for the Jays instead of paying him almost $8 million to tear it up with the A's. Also, this team is severely lacking at the DH slot: you'd think they'd be giving Adam Lind another look instead of struggling on with Stairs/Stewart.
Moreover, does anyone else find it weird that a "Moneyball" team went after guys with such low career OBP numbers (Wilkerson was .319 last year, Mench .305)?
1) Thomas was almost tagged out by Hill on a gapper while he was landing at second base.
2) Mike Sweeney should have an RBI. At least he would with about 95% of all MLB players.
3) AJ has 7 K's through 3.
Not to get all Stoeten on you, but a season-defining road trip in May?
Moneyball?
Well, I think the Jays thinking with Wilkerson is that he's been underperforming lately . . . as in the last three years. And they still see him as a .360 OBP kinda player he was with Montreal and Washington. Mistakenly? Probably.
Mench on the other hand is here specifically to hit against left-handers, for whom he has a career .360 OBP.
BOOOOOOOOORRRRNETT!!!!
hmmm. these don't seem to be the kansas city royals.
Fair enough, Mench is a lot better against lefties, and apparently he's "on his way to becoming Delaware's most prolific home run hitter" (sponsor quote on his Baseball Reference page). He definitely can't step into an everyday role though, as he's terrible against RHP. The Wilkerson move really doesn't make sense, though: he was bad enough to get cut by a terrible-hitting Seattle team, and his highest OBP since 2005 was .319 in 2007 (when he went .234/.319/.467). He hasn't been good in ages.
mench has played like 5 games, wilkerson is on borrowed time now, they realized he still sucks. the offense only has to be average until wells returns.
wow. anyone see the ending to the spurs-lakers game? spurs down by 2 with 2 seconds left, inbounds to barry, who shot fakes, fisher jumps and lands on top of him, barry heaves the 3 so he can shoot 3 FTs, but no whistle from the refs. tell me david stern doesn't want a celts-lakers final...
Help, I'm in Edmonton with only hockey on the "Jays" radio network and no TV!!! Any tvants today? I'm desperate!
pretty depressing game so far. aj striking out lots of batters but screwing up, jays not scoring with risp. same ol' same ol'

wow what the hell was hilly swinging at?
This kinda reminds me of how the last road trip started.
Anyone need a suicide watch this time?
