Hack Alert: Mike Toth
I decided to take some time off from disabling car horns on Dundas Street this evening to offer my opinion on a little weasel who has somehow managed to finagle his way into securing a platform from which to infect an unsuspecting audience with his ill-informed opinions.
No, despite the description, it's not Spencer Kyte from Bugs & Cranks again. This time I'm writing about the Larry The Cable Guy of Canadian sports radio, Mike Toth.
On today's Prime Time Sports on the FAN 590, Toth, filling in for an otherwise occupied Bob McCown, began receiving telephone calls during the first hour of his program from listeners bent on insulting not only the Toronto Blue Jays, but also the host of the post-game Jays Talk radio show, Mike Wilner.
As the calls and bashing continued to mount, I was shocked to hear Toth, who is always quick to inform his audience of the "correct" way to do things in journalism (whether it be moving on from a verbal flub or speaking into the breasts of a Sportsnet colleague), actually encourage the hate mongers to voice their insults.
As a writer on a blog titled Drunk Jays Fans who enjoys comparing the performance of his favourite baseball team to the travails of Jesus Christ on a cross, I am hesitant to use words like inappropriate.
However, Toth's fanning of the flames on air this afternoon came across to this particular listener as nothing more than the sour grapes of a threatened mental midget unable to keep up with a fellow radio host who actually goes to the trouble of forming opinions based on factual analysis instead of reactionary conjecture.
Toth's insecurity over Wilner's unwillingness to abandon ship on a .500 team with just under a hundred games to be played stems from an incident earlier this Spring when the Jays reporter was a guest on Toth and Mike Hogan's The Bullpen radio show. Toth was spouting off his mouth on why the Jays should fire John Gibbons, and Wilner, never one to let an uninformed opinion fly, brought up factual contradictions to Toth's ramblings. While Toth usually manages to do a good enough job of it on his own, Wilner's objections made Toth appear ridiculous.
Since this segment, Toth has often referred to Wilner as a blindly optimistic flag bearer for the Toronto Blue Jays organization (although with less imagery and more I-just-feels). Today, following an abbreviated Jays Talk hosted by Wilner, Toth allowed his shallow thinking to spill over the airwaves as he almost seemed giddy to learn that there were others out there that still haven't realized that a baseball season is 162 games long.
At the end of the segment, a calm, but justifiably perturbed Wilner phoned in to defend himself from the encouraged onslaught of attacks. He maintained the opinion that he's offered throughout the frustrating defeats that the Jays have faced this season: It's still early and playing .500 ball and staying within striking distance of a wild card spot isn't a bad thing.
It should be noted that all the members of DJF think of Wilner as a breath of fresh air in a medium that too often panders to its listeners by allowing them to get away with offering uninformed thoughts or incorrect figures when they phone in to a radio show. While some of us may disagree with the Miked Up blogger on occasion (cough Barajas cough), we all agree that listening to Wilner following a Jays game can be every bit as entertaining as listening to the game itself.
I would also like to mention that I have defended Mike Toth in the past. While I've often been left with the impression that his supposed irreverence is more shocking to himself than anyone else, I could understand how his antics would be considered humourous to the type of people who use the word "party" as a verb and refer to their trailer as a cottage.
Like almost everyone else not in a vegetative state, I didn't fall for his ill-advised April Fool's joke, but I have remained somewhat impressed with Toth's ability to remember where every single hockey player in the NHL played his junior hockey, and his lack of sophistication can at times be refreshing in comparison to the raging self-importance that other radio personalities may emit from time to time.
However, this afternoon's antics had all the convivial appeal of a diseased gnat burrowing itself deeper into my eardrum. I liken Toth's amateurish actions today to a child who misbehaves when his parents invite company over for a visit. He thinks he's putting on a show while the observers are merely watching a shameful spectacle.
Unfortunately, for Toth and the FAN 590, this spectator will be averting his eyes, and more importantly his ears, elsewhere when Toth is hosting a radio show from now on.
And if all that isn't enough, just look at what type of company he keeps:
Update: Wilner has an explanation for today's events on his blog.

and you guys say attacking Griffin is too easy a target
How dare Toth denounce Wilner! This coming from the guy who got pulled off of Sportsnet Connected.
Anyone have Toth's email address?
Does anyone know where I can listen to Toth's show where he ripped into Wilner? I'm too lazy to do my own research.
Thanks!
The first part of PTS isn't usually available online.
Oh my god. Every time I hear about Toth I think about that april fools bullshit. I've never seen someone so convinced they pulled a fast one while simultaneously so oblivious that it was enitrely unfunny and lame.
Sadly I missed the incident because I refuse to listen to Prime Time when Toth is in charge.
Toth encouraging or giving criticism on another broadcaster is like Marty York opening a school of journalism. I liked Mike Hogan's show, and I was so disappointed when I learned Mike Toth would be joining it (a feeling I suspect Hogan shared) because it meant I would no longer be able to listen regularly. Of all the people they could have chosen I cannot believe they picked Toth to be the replacement Prime Time host. I would rather have Farraway or Lajoie or even Stellick, just not Toth. When McCown one day retires I will honestly cry if they give the job to Toth.
I did like that Wilner took a few swipes at Toth. He has now taken one at Toth, Griff, and sort of at Marty York, which is awesome and only elevates him closer to god-like status in my eyes.
mike.toth@sportsnet.rogers.com
Come on guys, lay off the old Tother. It's only a goof.
neither a funny nor classy goof . . . which also sums up yourself
C'mon folks, the season is over. If they Jays want to win 90 games they'd have to win 56 of 94 games (18 games over .500!) and they're not going to do that, especially if they have to face "winners" like Seattle again...
I was at the game Wednesday and this team seems unwilling to win. Gibby was ejected in the top of the 9th after BJ blew it. The bottom rolls around, Joe Inglett is on first base. Do the Jays attempt to steal? No, Vernon whiffs, Stairs whiffs and Overpaid flies out. No game, no power, no hitting.
Go call Wilner with this nonsense.
HERE WE GO WILNER HERE WE GO
WOOT WOOT
Get Toth on the podcast, ask him to explain himself.
Good god Ryan I hope you're kidding. Did you stop to think about what "unwilling to win" means? Because you'd have to be a serious fucking turd (beyond Tothesque) to actually think that.
Better yet, get Toth and Wilner on at the same time and have an epic podcast full of gang-up on Toth-ing
I say unreasonable things after every Jays loss.
"Oh shit, looks like Gibbons was the 5th shooter on the grassy knoll"
"That girl 5 rows ahead was totally into me"
"Stoeten, I think your hair is growing back!"
"Dustin, your dad wants to talk to you"
"The Jays need to play .670 ball the rest of the year and it's IMPOSSIBLE"
I'm just sort of reactionary sometimes.
At least the next day i'm usually over it.
Beau, that's gold.
First of all, yes, they absolutely can still make the playoffs. Look at the Yankees last year. They sucked huge until well into June, then turned it around.
I know this is kind of like saying I'd rather die in my sleep than be hit by a car, but I'd still rather watch games like yesterday's than watch them get blown out and not even be in games all season. That has really only happened a handful of times this year.
HEY! I SAID STOP SHAKING THE BANDWAGON!!!
I've got bus tickets with all your names on 'em and I'll just pull over and shut 'er down!
Aside, have you correlated the Jays wins and losses with your page hit counts? Losses bring out the idiots.
Dustin, take your tongue out of Wilner's ass for a second and recognize and realize that Wilma has been a shameless J.P apologist for the past 7 years.
You know the past 7 years where we haven't been to the PLAYOFFS! even once. Sheeeet, we haven't even sniffed the aromatic musky scent of playoff panties in 7 years.
This club has been spinning wheels since the mildly retarded Billy Beane clone kidnapped Godfrey's offspring and brought his ridiculous nose to the Great White.
Yea, and the Jays are in a retarded division but have amassed the best pitching staff in the league and have more than capable hitters that are simply underperforming and would, had they been tossed in another division with Owners that gave a shit for the last 14 years, have made the playoffs by now.
JP is doing fine. One thing that is easy to do is to blame people that make the decisions despite the fact that maybe the decisions that were made were best case decisions.
As far as I can tell, only Jesus walks on water (and he probably faked it so he could bone some filly)
JP, in each of the last 3 off-seasons has addressed weaknesses with this team. What more do you want? Should he over-react just to shake the tree? If they end up worse short and long term is it worth it?
The team, as is, can win and likely will go on another good run like we saw last month. Let's assess things after that happens.
I do recall a three day period last month where we gained 3 games on the Red Sox. Things can change quickly and there is plenty of baseball left still.
Fuck though, this has been FUCKING FRUSTRATING.
First of all, yes, they absolutely can still make the playoffs. Look at the Yankees last year. They sucked huge until well into June, then turned it around.Quote
Very bad example, the Yankees had made the playoffs for the last 11 years prior been to 6 World Series and won 4 of them. The Yanks had a record of winning for over a decade, when was the last time the Jays were in the playoffs?1993!They haven't even sniffed the playoffs for 15 years now so what is gonna change, now?
Ryan, thanks for your honesty. One third of this season is over and this team has been playing poorly. If you had told me that this team would be in the cellar on June 12,I would have laughed at you. This team is constructed terribly, especially the offense,it's like a poor's man AAAA team.Sarcastically,I wonder if JP is trying to help out the Red Sox,maybe he'll trade Marcum and Litsch to the New Evil Empire for a bag of balls! The Jays need offense, let's get Lugo...yeah right!
Wilner is a somewhat entertaining habitual contrarian who is also a shill for the Jays front office.I like the fact that he wants Lofton AND Bonds,it shows that he knows something BUT his assertion that it's early is utter poppycock. The Jays officially suck after last Thursday's game against the Yankees and it was solidified by yesterday's debacle.I heard some dickhead on the radio say that Queen Felix pitched a gem,Marcum did too but the team fucking up again obscured that fact.
How dare you guys advocate remaining calm? If living in a city full of immigrants has taught me one thing, it's that your sports team's performance is a perfectly good reason to stop showering, grease up your hair and riot in the streets 'til 3am, win or lose.
@anon: Whoa whoa whoa. You can whip out "habitual contrarian" but you still can't figure out how punctuation and spaces interact? You continue to astound me.
Not to defend what Toth did(Especially since I didn't hear that part of PTS), but come on Parkes, Wilner can stick up for himself.
I realize you were probably just trying to go for the "bash Toth" angle, but this post does come across like you wrote it with your tongue in Wilner's ass. I mean, if you really thought it was "inappropriate", that's fine, but would you really have bothered to write this if Toth had been shitting on Griffin?
If it's a crappy journalist attacking a poor writer like Griffin, let them duke it out.
If it's a crappy journalist attacking one of the only decent Jays writers in this city, fuck him up!
I'd liketo see more Marty York comedy on this sight. For example, according to Party Marty's sources, weeks ago the Jays were canning Gibby for Cito, are currently in a bidding war for Scott Hatteberg (although, sadly, this one wouldn't shock me), and in CFL news, Noel Prefontaine was traded after informing Argos management that he was no longer willing to play hard due to injury issues.
oh, also, Marty reports that due to the team's play, the Jays may be All-Star free at this years mid-summer classic. Um, about the rules of that game, Marty....
Wilner just gave the shout-out to DJF in an interview on the FAN re: what they're calling "Tothgate." The dude's a classy mofo, yo.
Bahh. Not having sound at work sucks. What the hell is he saying? Are other guys now jumping on the bash-Toth bandwagon?
Honestly, the reason everyone is so defensive is because Wilner is the only Blue Jays writer/personality worth paying attention to in this city.
How dare you guys advocate remaining calm? If living in a city full of immigrants has taught me one thing, it's that your sports team's performance is a perfectly good reason to stop showering, grease up your hair and riot in the streets 'til 3am, win or lose.Quote
Adams ,I thought that you were talking about the Native Born Anglo Canadian Bacon Eating Hosers like yourself until I saw the word:immigrant!I've smelled some people in Ontario who use "eh" and are Natives(not Native American but pasty white people who stole the land from us and came from the UK) that smell like they never touched a bar of soap ,let alone used one to bathe!Pissing on the immigrants isn't gonna solve the Jays problems, maybe I should ask a First Nations shaman to put a curse on the Pasty Faced Bacon eaters and lift the curse on the Jays, sounds fair,no?
I take it that Parkes wasn't drunk when he wrote this post. It is actualy the most coherent, well-written post that I have ever read on DJF.
I would add Jeff Blair to your list Erik
I heard Toth yesterday and regardless of if you like Wilner or not, the shit he was saying was unbelieveably unprofessional.
"Wilner's forgotten more about baseball than most of us will ever know."
Toth pretty much spewed out 3-7 straight minutes of lines like that where he pretty much calls Wilner an idiot who has no idea what he's talking about and then turns around and says the kind of stupid shit you hear from Wilner's callers. I couldn't believe it. He even said he was surprised Wilner didn't come in there and punch him. He knew he was stepping way, way over the line. Fuck him, the cocksucker.
I purposefully stopped listening to the call-in hour of PTS when Tother is on, because (as I've stated elsewhere) he can't carry the show as well as others.
Gibby is in the bottom 5 bench bosses league-wide and the fact that he is still employed is a black mark on the average JP Riccardi.
Gibby: "Hey lets give Rolen and Rios the day off today."
Anyone with a brain: "Gibby, we've got a full days rest tomorrow, you sure thats a smart move?"
"Fuck it, toss me a beer would ya"
The Cubs are a worse than .500 team on the road. With our pitching, and the recent application of a generous lathering of DL to Soriano, the Jays can sweep this series.
I'm pretty sure that the spaceless anon poster is Parkes. He doesn't want to disable anon posting so he can keep it up and get people all riled up.
Aside: I don't listen to radio shows because the average caller is usually so retarded they make me want to blog about it. That and there is rarely anything of substance said other than what occurred in the game and some BS they thought up while taking a shit. I'd rather go to a blog for my inane chatter/arguments fix.
Oh and Jacque Jones was DFA by the Marlins today. JP should give him a try. We don't have enough OF as it is.
/sarcasm
Kamran, the line about Wilner forgetting more than we'll ever know is a compliment.
Otherwise, Toth is an idiot. Good for him for knowing where every NHLer played junior, but it's annoying when he says it in the highlights just to show off. If I really wanted to know where Ryan Bayda played junior hockey, I'd look it up.
Kamran, to say that someone has forgotten more about a subject than most people know is just an expression. It's actually a complimentary expression.
Toth never questioned Wilner's knowledge of the sport, many times saying that Wilner was one of the most knowledgeable people in Toronto regarding baseball.
He did question his blind faith in the team and it's management, however. And allowing his callers to voice those sorts of opinions seemed like a veiled attack against Wilner and complete chicken shit.
Ryan: You're kidding right? Last year, a third of the playoff teams had records similar to the Jays at this point in the season.
Saying that a team has to win a certain amount of games to reach ninety is very misleading, especially during a slump. At the end of May, you could also say that the Jays could lose X amount of games and still make the playoffs.
Jason & Colin: It occurred to me last night that I didn't want to do what Toth did to Wilner through the blog. We like to shit on people all the time, but any feces target is more than encouraged to comment in the comments section, send us their defence which we'll post without changes or come on our podcast anytime. That's an open invite to the Campbells, Griffins, Toths and Yorks that feel attacked.
Christopher Jones: Look, I'm not Stoeten agreeing with Wilner all the time. I really like Mike and think he's the best part of a Jays radio broadcast. I admit that. Even if you disagree with Wilner on the status of the team, you have to agree he makes a good argument for whatever side he's on. I think the consensus would agree that he's one of the best media personalities following the Jays. Attacking him like that was fucking ridiculously inappropriate and completely uncalled for. It was chilldish on Toth's part.
Anon with spatial issues: How exactly does a history of winning affect the outcome of games? Last season, the three other teams who made the playoffs while hovering around .500 at this point in the season didn't have a "history of winning." I think the Yankees had a team of veterans that didn't panic at a slow start.
Andrew: I promise you spaceless isn't me. Honestly, unless we get advertising up, it doesn't matter to us how many people visit the site or comment on posts. In fact, earlier this week we were informed that the picture of Jesus on the cross caused a rather large site to link to something elsewhere. We lost a shitload of traffic to keep Jesus up. It was a clear cut question of WWJD.
"Pissing on the immigrants isn't gonna solve the Jays problems, maybe I should ask a First Nations shaman to put a curse on the Pasty Faced Bacon eaters and lift the curse on the Jays, sounds fair,no?"
While we're at it, could we get rid of all them black players, too? They make me nervous.
Hey hey, woah! Toth was also taking veiled attacks at complete chicken shit!? FUCK OFF!
Let's leave chicken shit out of this.
On to better things. Behemoth is a fun roller-coaster. I rode it yesterday . . . weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Was I the only one who didn't know (until just now) that Toth coincedentally decided that it was "time for a change" to radio shortly after being temporarily removed from Connected following an alleged run-in with a co-worker.
As an aside, does anyone know if the Fan has a feedback email which could be flooded with Toth complaints?
http://www.fan590.com/contact/
That's a link to a feedback form you can enter complaints into.
I didn't get it until I re-read what I posted.
Let me rephrase.
"And allowing his callers to voice those sorts of opinions seemed like a veiled attack against Wilner and (also seemed like) complete chicken shit.
Actually, I sort of respected Toth for that. The rumours say that he thought that the direction Sportsnet Connected was heading was wrong, and I have to agree that the segments that are obviously meant to attract younger viewers are tres lame.
I can respect Toth for disliking Connected (I don't really know, I never really watched the old one and I've never really watched Connected, I get my highlights online, sans Toth and his mornoic co-hosts. I can also respect Toth tranferring to radio when he was unhappy with Connected. I don't respect him shoving a producer because of a disagreement and then transferring (as per the rumours). It just screams unhappy star turns to bully tactics.
Now to be fair to Toth we don't know what actually happened and probably never will (maybe the producer antagonized him, maybe it was only a verbal conflict, maybe something else entirely happened), I can only speculate based on rumours and I try not to hold it against him because of that.
Andrew,I'm not Parkes but I'm concerned about the team and some of the "I need to get laid/I live in mom's basement crowd" that posts here.I remember telling Adams to not send me a spacebar because he might trip down mom's stairs when he came out of the basement for the first time in 6 months.HHAHAHAHAHA!I see immigrants being attacked and greasy haired Tonys being called greasy haired Tonys and I am combatting this racism and xenophobia.
Parkes, the thing with the Phightin Phils last year is that they usually missed the wild card by one or two measly games a couple of years right before they finally made it.The Phils sniffed the playoffs for a time before they made it.The Cubs added Lou Piniella, who was a winning player and manager. The Rockies give the Jays fans hope though BUT I err on the side of cynicism.Under Gibby, the best this team has done is 87 wins and that was 2 years ago when they could hit.Pragmatically, this team can't win late extra inning games at home! That is the worst thing this season, they are almost .500 at home and the league as a whole shows home field advantage being more dominant this year, yet the Jays play at the Centre like a visiting team. They have problems with losing one run games. They have almost no comeback ability in late innings.Say what you want but this team is not making the playoffs as is,they need to make changes. If they miraclously make the playoffs with Gibby make the playoffs, then they are a first round blowout.Yeah they can pitch BUT they can't hit to save their lives in a clutch situation.
My bad Parksey... but yeah... people don't care about swearing when someone posts a picture of a dude with an imaginary dad who lived and died over 2000 years ago. Try reading the bible as a novel... ripping good read.
Since nobody is paying you to do this, you can (and should) post whatever you want.
Now, if spaceless isn't Parkes, it must be Stoeten. His grammar is perfect so it implies his alternate personality would have terrible grammar.
"I'm concerned about the team and some of the "I need to get laid/I live in mom's basement crowd" that posts here."
"I see... greasy haired Tonys being called greasy haired Tonys and I am combatting this racism and xenophobia."
Whoever this does turn out to be, they were doing a really great job of making me think this person might *actually* exist until now. Now I'm thinking it's simply comedic genius at work.
Which rules out Stoeten.
Stoeten? The grammar is great even brilliant. The problem is.....some dweebs have a problem with their cage being rattled AND spaces.I always wondered what sports psychologists were for and it seems that it's for some of the in denial Jays faithful, who need to consult such parties and move out of the basement and try to get laid. The Great White North has some pretty hot women you can wow them with your trivia regarding the Jays, comic books and Star Trek!If that doesn't work try to go after a smelly immigrant,or a greasy Antonia or a Pepper Frenchette from Quebec. They love xenophobic ,detailed fixated ,and in denial Jays fans.Good luck...you'll need it!
What's funny is that Toth and Campbell were actually entertaining as a highlight duo.
Sportnet's highlight shows have been increasingly brutal since this duo was broken up. But really anything is better than Scott McKormick and Jim Lang. And when did it become sports news to have a whole segment devoted to the latest YouTube video (I thought that's what Blogs are for).
What's sad is that Toth and Campbell both suck ass at providing insightfull commentary.
Maybe that teleprompter provided more than we thought it did.
Anon: You're putting way too much stock in what a manager does (what has Piniella done for the Cubs this year?), and also you're making all sorts of conclusions based on incomplete data or hunches that you have. They have almost NO comeback ability? No, they just haven't been able to yet. They CAN'T win extra inning games at home? No, they just haven't done so yet. There's a huge difference. They CAN, they just HAVEN'T very often. They have to do better at a lot of things if they want to get this turned around, but to say they CAN'T is just wrong. Stuff like that, for me at least, generally undercuts and of the decent points that you are making, which is a shame.
Does anybody remember the start of last year when the whole world thought the Jays would crush the ball and pitch for shit? Expectations can be flipped on their head very quickly in this game. Oh shit, remember May??? This bipolar nonsense is really aggravating. These guys have track records that show they can be a lot better than they have been, so why not ride it out and not be panicky idiots about it? Besides, there are no moves to be made at this point anyway. And if there were moves, they'd require giving up big time assets to get the kind of player that would be a good fit-- in other words, it would take a huge gamble. That, right now, in a fit of frustration, would be stupid.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure my grammar is terrible. (Alternate: Andrew, when did you meet my Grammar? She's a hell of a classy lady.)
Martine Gailler(sp?)is the only reason to watch Sportsnet.
Please lord let me give her 5 seconds she'd never forget.
Comedic genius, thanks mate. Some of us can be comedic by design(me) and some of us by accident:The 2008 Toronto Blue Jays!Wilner also makes me laugh with his insane spin on everything.I haven't heard or seen something that unintentionally funny since Showgirls or Jason X!Mike really thinks that we will all eat up this Rogers PR scam that it's early, etc son...BULLSHIT.JP moves have resulted in a mediocre, bottom dwelling team.Yeah, attendance is up this year.......POPPYCOCK.Yeah,official attendance is up but how many people actually go to see the games?
BTW I'm the same anon who started the war against Scientology and now I'm starting a war against smelly Dutchmen, greasy haired Tonys(like JP),ugly stinky immigrants, inept shills,GMs , managers and lastly the ignorant hoser who kisses JP and Gibby's butt.
HAIL XENU!
Parkes,
Why did you not use "No Longer the Toth'd of the Town" as your headline??
Do I have to come up with everything here?
Pinella put Ryan Dumpster back in the rotation. That was 100% Pinella. He also advocated Reed, who we all know is 110% greater than amazing.
Stoeten, Piniella comes from a winning culture(Yankees, his tenure with the Reds and Seattle) and has had success in the MLB as both a player and a manager. The Cubs finally have the right mix of offense, defense and management to make it work.If only the Jays had that confluence of GM,manager and team working working in tandem to get somewhere.........
Also,my point regarding the lack of clutch hitting, comeback ability and losses in one run games are heavily quantifiable. As I have mentioned before,I wonder if Gibby has the record for the most 1 run losses per capita. Can they change this situation?Possibly but there must be changes. They need better in-game management, the mix of players is not "clutch"(Scutaro was called Lil Papi because of this ability),and the offensive chemistry is off.Scouting a team you like is painful, especially when they've snatched defeat from the jaws of victory so many times this last week.
Stedron, are the Cubs in last place?Last time I checked the Happy Dicks in Chicago are already planning a parade for the Cubs,so chill.I love it when people pick on one or two moves on a championship/winning/first place team, meanwhile the Jays need all the analysis not the Happy Dick Cubbies in Chicago.
"Pepper Frenchette" - Awesome. Reminds me of my last road trip to Quebec City.
Wanna know what team is eerily similar to the Jays? The 2008 LA Dodgers. Their manager? Joe Torre.
The dodgers have a solid average and obp, but are basement dwellers in power categories. They have the 3rd best ERA in the NL but are 4 games below .500. Their Pythagorean Win Loss is 4 games over .500
That's what happens when Jeff Kent is your power source.
It's kinda depressing that both my teams are underperforming so much. I still have high hopes... 97 games remain.
Anon - Idon'tknowwhatyourcommentwassupposedtomean.Iwasmildlyonyourside.Iagreethatitwouldbenicetohaveamanagerwithsomeclout.
Ok, enough of that. Aside from the poke at the Reed Johnson Fan Club, I think that Pinella has made a difference in Chicago. The thing about managers is that it's the little things that snowball into greatness or failure. You make a little lineup tweak, and you let it ride for a while and see what happens. My biggest knock against Gibby is the inconsistancies with the lineup. It's like he's searcing for the magic combination that will solve all the offensive woes. We're getting into intangibles, but I wonder if the hitters would be able to concentrate more if they knew going in that A) they were playing, and B) where they were hitting in the lineup. In the name of science, I would like to see that variable removed and just run the same 9 out there for a week and see what happens.
-searching-
The Jays just may win all of their remaining games.
Stoeten, someone (me) took a shot at your baldness in the comments section of Wilner's Blog. Up next: a 'Jack has a permanent sweater' joke.
Can Gibby still hit a home run? No. Then he's not the problem. Or the solution.
A new manager would sure satisfy the people looking for a change but it won't do any good at all.
If you want change, vote for Obama.
Andrew: the Jays' pythag has evened out. Unlike the Dodgers, they've earned the record they have thus far, if that.
Anon: I think you're transferring your racist, xenophobic traits — not to mention your living situation — onto others. Is it because your mom didn't hug you when you were a kid? Just open your bedroom door and go upstairs buddy, talk to her. She's a classy lady and she didn't mean to damage you; she just wasn't sure how to raise you. Kids don't come with handbooks, you know.
(On a related note, your mom does come with a handbook. Zing!)
adams:
The Jays real record: 34-34, 3rd place in AL Eastern Division
Scored 277 runs, Allowed 252 runs.
Pythagorean W-L: 37-31
What even out? If you look at the team stats for the Jays and Dodgers side by side you see very, very similar teams.
The AL East is the only division that every team is .500 or better. The Dodgers are below .500 and still in 2nd.
Piniella managed the fucking Rays, did alot of good, that winning culture bullshit, is just that, bullshit. No one was calling Gibbons the best manger in the league after the 20-10 May, so why does everyone shit on him when he goes 3-7 in June. Unbelievable.
Holy crap Andrew... that's taken a HUGE shift in just two weeks. A few blowouts plus a bunch of one-run losses will really fuck you over.
On May 28th: 29-26, pythag was 28.97-26.03.
Since May 28th: 5-8, pythag is 8-5.
My bad, didn't realize how heavily the Jays had shifted it by being such utter shit the last couple weeks.
Do the Rays even count?
Only to ten, Mudhead.
I absolutely can't fucking stand listening to Mike Toth. That the guy has a forum to sound off about a sport he clearly knows nothing about is unfuckingbelieveable!
He had Blair on the other day & at every opportunity would steer the conversation towards hockey:
'The Jays drafted 1st basemen David Cooper with their first pick, which made me think of another David Cooper who played for the OHL's Shitassmotherfuckers...he had the worst smelling hockey socks I've ever been around, blah fucking blah....'.
Mike Toth sucks donkey balls.
Adams, I'm not projecting anything ,I'm talking about you and your misbegotten ilk.You seem like an immature 50 year old who still groks Spock.Remember former Canuck Shatner's skit on SNL?Get A Life!Get one, mate. And I'm not a racist,I'm a misanthrope !But I especially despise those who call Dutchmen queer(which they are),Italians(greasy haired, which they are),Blacks cheap(most of them are),Jews wonderful(untrue) and America the Promised Land(complete BS I'm an American and I fully say that Quebec is better than the US ,but not English speaking Canada). And your mama was seen in the "Oral Office" with President G W Bush and she pulled a Lewinsky on him!It will be in the Sun tomorrow........
Stedron. Maybe I should respond like this? Old farts usually need reading glasses or have too much hair on their hands and are going blind because of a different reason.......
Look Gibby is not the manager to take the team into the promised land. He's well liked and what not,but this team needs a better in game manager who is more of a hardcharger.Gibby doesn't create magic(make something happen) ,he waits for it to happen. The team needs a better manager to lock into the potential of this team, pure and simple.
Andrew,I live in the US and Obama is an empty suit,he's all sizzle and no steak....then again that is what most Americans like anyway. Good luck with the LA Dodgers,Torre did a great job with the Yankees for the first half of his tenure THEN started burning out relievers like Scott Proctor(who is on LA now) and his aura came off.Nomar will play shortstop, but he is not the same old Nomar. Lastly,Pepper Frenchettes rule, don't they?
Rays? The Rays talent was not developed to the point where any manager could do anything with that club! They have Dicky Mo AAAA pitchers relieving and they were not ready for primetime playerwise.Dick Williams could come back and that team would have sucked.Bad call,Steg. Sted, the reason the Jays deserve so much shit is that the Rays can hit and pitch like a real AL contending team can and the Jays can only pitch like a contending team. That is why their playoff chances are so off.
The Jays have to jump over the Rays,Yanks and the Bloody Sox and that seems unlikely.
Can you imagine how long that post would've been with spaces?
Anon: The Rays can pitch like a contending team. Their offense is white bread.
I agree on your critique of Obama... If I had a vote, it would be for McCain. At least he has balls.
Now... on to Torre.
#1: Bernie Williams
#2: Mariano Rivera.
#3: Derek Jeter
#4: Andy Pettitte
Those four names are why Torre is so awesome. Players make the manager.
The balls to continue the absurd and disgusting foreign policy of the Bush administration? Yeah... great.
(Sorry, couldn't resist.)
Now Stoeten, can you really gauge a presidential candidates future policy based on what he says during his campaign?
Have you seen The Dead Zone? Martin Sheen ring a bell?
Obama is going to nuke the Iranians . . . I foresaw it.
Adams,It had spaces it's just that your bloody vision is ruined from crying about the Jays so much! HAHAHHA!Triple Zing,hoser.....
Stoeten, FYI McCain is the most hated Republican by party hacks and the right wing BECAUSE he has worked across party lines with the Democrats more than any other Republican senator. As a matter of fact, one of these wacky right wingers ,Bill Cunningham, call him John "Liberal" McCain . He is not like Bush at all and that tag of a third Bush term is propagandistic and futile. The problem with Obama is that he is more liberal than the most lefty political hack in Canada . Obama has a more liberal voting record than Bernie Sanders ,senator from Vermont , who is a fucking Socialist( literally ).
Someone ask Tother on air when he choked the shit out of a producer.
It happened.
Toronto Mike knows.
