Hazy Sunday: Checkin' in with Josh 10
Who needs a hug? After this week's events, I think we all do. Or a noose. But look who's here to brighten everyone's day? It's your favourite ex-Jay Josh Towers!
I know what you're thinking: "Where has he been the last fucking month? I need my Josh Towers fix! I'm fucking dying over here, man!" Well, the story goes like this:
Last we heard from JT, he totally muffed it, which isn't what we normally expect from him. Since then, Towers had gone on to pitch pretty well. And by pretty well, I mean pretty well if he were pitching in a softball league where you pitch to your own team.
Since that game, Towers has gone on to notch two more wins and drop three for a 4-5 record and an ERA of 6.69. But despite those stellar numbers, as of June 6, Towers led the Pacific Coast League in hits allowed. Now, I'm no professional baseball manager or anything, but I'm assuming one would be hesitant to promote a pitcher back to the majors when he seems to be the worst pitcher in AAA.
Not only that, after checking the Sky Sox website (Parkes, why the fuck hasn't this site been featured on Friday Afternoon Linkin' Park? It's hot shit!) numerous times to try to get a live blog going for y'all, I noti
ced something suspicious. Towers stopped being listed as probably starting pitcher. Upon doing a bit more research by going into game recaps and questionning what the fuck I'm doing with my life looking at recaps of a Pacific Coast League team, I saw that Josh has actually been coming in to pitch a few innings here and there in the middle of games. Hang on, that's what a relief pitcher does! Fuck me, looks like Towers has been demoted to the bullpen ... of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. Think it might be about time to replace the Checkin' in with Josh photo with this one. It's going to be a while.
But for every cloud ...
Last Thursday, the Sky Sox played a nail biter of a minor league game that went into extra innings. After exhausting four pitchers and heading into the 11th inning, Sky Sox manager Whatshisface had no choice but to call upon the mighty Josh to take over. After giving up a single, Towers retired the next two batters only to allow Sean Rodriguez to hit a two-out RBI single putting the Sox down 5-4. But if Towers is happy about playing in Colorado Springs at all, it's that his offence isn't like the Jays and they went on to tie it in the bottom of the 11th. Totally amped, Towers pitched a squeeky clean 12th inning and the Sox took note and got another run to win the game in the bottom of the 12th. What a game! And Towers got the win to even out his record to 5-5 and get his ERA down to 6.56!
I don't know about you, but doesn't this seem eerily similar to around this time last year when the Jays came up with that amazing comeback rally in the 9th against Tampa Bay and Towers somehow managed to get the win out of it simply because Gibby had no one else to put on the mound? Think about it.

41 rational and reasonable comments:
If the Sky Sox don't want him anymore does he go to Colorado's AA or is he just left without a job? If the latter is true will you continue to update us on his post-baseball career?
Wherever Josh goes, I will be there.
Dude, I know it might be a bit easy to not notice in that photo, but I think the real story here has been missed:
Long hair? WTF?
That's the smuggiest photo I've ever seen.
Mench was optioned, League called up.

Whoa whoa whoa. Towers having a post-baseball career?? Let's not get ahead of ourselves here...
hehe ... speaking of AA, it would be kinda cool if her went there ... the Tulsa Drillers ... the name is just cooler than a lame name like the Sky Sox ... or how about the A affiliates the Modesto Nuts or Asheville Tourists ... now those would give Bergkamp a good source for some cool post-headlines
so after back-to-back world series Cito gives up back-to-back losses ... waiting anxiously if he can bring us back-to-back sweeps ...
keeping my fingers crossed
go jays!
Before yesterdays game, Cito said the team more likely scores 3 runs a game. He wants to ride the pitching and get the offense up to 5 runs a game.
First game, 0 runs. Second game, 3 runs. I'm betting they score 5 runs tonight. If so, this thing is rigged.
Litsch and Burnett have not been providing ridable pitching (nor McGowan on the road), so good luck to him with that 5 runs per game thing.
ADAM LIND! 12 pitch at bat then Dinger!
Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy all over.
I think my boner is going to explode
holy shit, they might win. emphasis on might
Lind hit a ball and it went over the fence in center field, and the umpires just let him jog around the bases and score a run. What the fuck was that all about? I've never seen that sort of play before.
LOL
give it right back to them, dusty. i'm going to mail you a punch-in-the-face-a-gram when you get back to toronto.
you gotta put a name to that gem anon
Is Lind our 3-hole hitter yet?
fasano got traded to indians
McGowan was ready to shit the bed that inning before Rolen (and to a lesser extent Overbay, since he dropped it) made the bedpan save.
this team is scary with average pitching
cito is god
Rolen had another one of those ground rule quadruples. Must be some kind of Pittburgh thing.
cito doesn't seem to view downs as a setup guy.
@tercet: He was playing for the Braves. And it was a desperation move for the Indians.
Joe Inglett = a leftie David Eckstien. A Leckstine.
Looks like Cito views Downs as a 2 inning setup man.
Why are they announcing hitters for the other team in the 9th? Doesn't the game end after we bat?
Well, we lost our 8th straight. Too bad too, because we outscored them by three runs and everything.
Downs used to be our swingman. He likely thinks of Jesse Carlson as a high leverage one inning left handed reliever. I'm pretty sure he's seen enough of Jason Frasor to know when to use him.
Good game, nice to see 8 runs on our side of the board for once.
And generally the home team advantage means the home team gets to bat in the bottom of the 9th when they are behind.
As Kenny Mayne would say, "Lind hits the ball over some fencing they had set up before the game".
I like how Downs has been getting 2innings with Cito. He is certainly capable of it.

I much prefer when Kenny Mayne says "bring me your finest meats and cheeses for the post game feast."
There's not much joy in Dutchieville, no horns to blow, no cups to show but you can still grow tupips.LAYOFFS! They were really good but got beat at their own game - sound familiar.
Geez, if Gibby was the obstacle that kept Lind from being called up, then he deserved to be get fired.
i think he deserved to be get smart.
"Why are they announcing hitters for the other team in the 9th? Doesn't the game end after we bat?"
Gold.
In the rush to check in with JT, Brandon League is being virtually ignored at what is a very awesome time for him. What gives?
someone should check in with our Dutch friends to make sure everything is, you know, OK. I heard the dudes dressed in orange royally Blue Jays'd the bed against the Russians.
The commies philosophy of sharing the ball really helped them out.
As usual, the Dutch were more interested in getting home early.
can't wait for next year!
