Here's Something New... Shitting on Dave Perkins
These days the Star's Dave Perkins only occasionally pops his head into the baseball realm of things, which makes it somewhat difficult to figure out whether or not he's gone completely senile when it comes to the grand old game. He made an appearance in this morning's paper, though, and after having checked the reading on my patented Perkins Senility-o-Metre (TM) as I eye-rolled my way through his article, This one could come back to bite Jays (which came up "Typical Wilner Caller", FYI), I'm not going to lie: right I'm leaning towards completely fucking losing it.
I mean... what else am I supposed to think about a ridiculous title like that?
Or how about a line like this one: "If this team again misses the playoffs, come October we might be able to point back at this excruciating defeat and see the scars it inflicted."
Um... Really?
I suppose it's possible something like that could happen, but... uh... isn't it maybe a little premature to pin the Jays inability to make the playoffs four months from now on yesterday's loss? Call me crazy, but I think it probably is.
So what the hell is going on here? Is he trying to pick up Griffin's insanity slack? I realize that Griff's been struggling mightily to provoke the vicious ire of the blogosphere lately (just a slump, I'm sure-- keep on swinging for the fences, dude!), but trying to compensate for it just isn't necessary.
And yet the insanity continues!
"In the ninth, two Yankees went down easily and the next three men to face Ryan, namely Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui and Giambi, were a combined 4-for-43 against him. Yet they – he – still couldn't close it out and now you wonder how seriously they themselves will take their chances in the next crunch moment."
What the fucking fuck? So... based on a tiny, two-Lind (TM) sample size, we're going to expect that every single fucking time, the Beej, merely 13 months removed from Tommy John surgery and still undoubtedly without his best stuff, is going to dominate three of the most dangerous hitters of the last decade? And if he doesn't there is something gravely wrong?
"They should have departed here and left the Yankees for not-quite dead, because they're never dead with their talent, but surely hurting and wondering whether they have the pitching goods to overhaul the teams in front of them. The Jays should have been on that plane with two out of three, looking at the Red Sox in front of them and leaving the Yankees behind.
Toronto has Baltimore and Seattle, two non-powers, on the immediate horizon at home and probably will get Vernon Wells back ahead of schedule (he began a rehab assignment last night). There was no better opportunity to really get the season rolling; they started yesterday only four losses behind the Red Sox with a licence to be confident. Now this."
Huh? "Now this"? Seriously??? Holy fuck, hide the razors in the Perkins house! I mean... yeah, the Jays should have won the game (if you ignore the gift of a dropped ball by Cabrera), but uh... I'm pretty sure they'll get over it. Once again, call me crazy if you like, but I'd sort of like to think that guys who have played baseball all their lives would have a little more perspective. No?
And, what exactly happened in the ninth inning of a 9-8 that would leave the Yankees "wondering whether they have the pitching goods"?
I'm not saying it wasn't an unbelievably deflating loss, but seriously? Seriously???

29 rational and reasonable comments:
LOL at "two-Lind" sample size.
Perhaps the Jays could borrow some of his Hot Air to get pumped back up.
It was funny how the Yankee win was called the best win of the year by the Yankee manager and the Yankee TV announcer. Also mentioned was how this win camouflaged things for the Yanks like:Wang pitching terribly,Cano can't hit and can't bunt, their defense sucks and Farnsworth was saved by a ground rule double AND the Melky catch, but he still sucks.Right now ,the Yanks are still vulnerable no matter what happened yesterday.Next time ,this happens the Jays have to learn to do whatever possible to win.Like Dustin pitching better and the Beej getting it done,no excuses. That will be helped by Hill and Johnny Mac coming back. That Afrod hit is caught by Johnny Mac and game over .
Speaking of hacks, sources are now telling Marty York that Jim Leyland may be fired soon (maybe next week), which is quite the controversial call given the fact that his extremely expensive team is sucking balls.
Speaking of controversial calls, Marty York is ruling Wilner's homeruns foul, further proving that he is in fact a giant tool.
So... Jim Leyland won't be fired.
Maybe, maybe not. His team is playing badly which means I would feel comfortable saying he will be fired soon if the Tigers don't play well. And I don't need a source, it's dead obvious.
6 hits allowed through 5 for Marcum. This is the kind of regression I can deal with. The shutout is still intact.
I hate to knee-jerk, but with Gibbons letting the defensive wizardry of sub-fielder Joe Inglett allow a double, then pulling Marcum in favour of Brian "I Don't Have Enough" Tallet... like, how are we supposed to defend not firing him? Geeeeeeeeez.
Yep, tough to defend that one. I was so looking forward to a win for my fantasy team.
Perhaps we need to have a ritualistic sacrifice. Let's burn Jason Frasor.
Fuck Benitez in a uncomfortable place.
And Eckstein.
This team is sending into a deep depression.
wow. just... wow.
What happened to our bullpen?!!!!!!?1//1/11/12,,12fsdsjsdfUFKCIT!
fucking armando serving up meatballs
FIRE HIM FIRE HIM FIRE HIM
Why does God hate me and my Jays?!
Why is he even in the game (both this one and MLB in general)?
If we can't get this game back I'm going to drink tonight until I can't see.
wow stew's had some shitty ass hacks tonight
should've hit stairsy for stewart there instead of ecksman
just to continue piling on stewart... despite being 5th on the team in PA's, he has a vorp of -1.8
Not that it makes this loss any easier to swallow...but both the Yanks and Bosux lost to sub-poo-poo teams tonight.
What was Stew's VORP after April? His May wasn't too bad, but June isn't looking so hot so far.
Bringing in Tallet to face a RH hitter is questionable considering his splits, but with a four run lead, it's ridiculous to shit on Gibbons. Absolutely ridiculous. But man, did that suck.
It's hard to look good as a manager in games like this.
ridiculous game.
when did the bullpen start serving meatballs?
Umm...Stoeten...did you mean a LH hitter? Because Brian Tallet has huge reverse splits. He's had major troubles getting lefties out the past 2 years.
Gibbons did nothing wrong with the bullpen tonight. It's not his fault if guys who have otherwise done well...suck.
What he could have done was pinch hit Stairs for the fucking terrible Shannon Stewart instead of David Eckstein who is one of the best contact hitters in the league. Now that was stupid.
Can anybody explain to me why Shannon Stewart is still in the major leagues?
Why let Marcum start the 8th against brian roberts? That is what LOOGYs are for.
Talk about a classic over-reaction. One has to think about how these guys actually land and KEEP their jobs with shit like this.
its benitez's fault, and whoever wants benitez there instead of better options like League and Wolfe.
Well now I know how seriously they took themselves in that next clutch moment.
Brian Tallet isn't such a bad guy. He posted an apology to the fans for his recent suckage.

You wanna blow another one?
Give him a couple months.
