Snatching Defeat from the Jaws of Victory

I said this already in the comments of the previous post, but unbelievable mother of fuck! I don't even want to talk about that one. A four hour motherfucking game with a 7-2 lead, turned into an 8-6 lead, then an 8-7 lead, then on a two-out, 0-2 pitch in the bottom of the ninth, the Giam-fucking-bino wins it. Fuck off.

If it's alright with everybody, I'm going to discuss some happier things. Or at least some neutral things. Or... well... basically anything that doesn't have to do with making me relive the end of that fucking game again. I know it's just one game, and I know there have been a few times this year where you could say that they should have won, but never like this. They absolutely fucking should have won that one. Gahhhh...

So... Brian Wolfe has been activated from the DL. Have you seen this? Have you heard about this? ... They say he's going to pitch some more in triple-A before they bring him up. [rimshot]

The draft has been in the news lately. Have you seen this? Have you heard about this? . . . The Jays picked David Cooper of UC Berkeley. He's a first baseman with a lot of power potential and not much else-- though Keith Law thinks he's more an Overbay-y doubles guy. . . I wonder if he'll be any good. [rimshot]

The European soccer championships are about to get under way in Austria and Switzerland. Have you seen this? Have you heard about this? . . . Our friend Cathal Kelly of the Star is blogging over there and has been fucking nailing it so far. [rimshot]

No, no, seriously... Griffin actually kind of nailed it this week. For him, at least. At least, I thought he did. He wrote a mail bag that was generally pretty good-- and almost wholly uncringeworthy-- except, well... it's a pretty glib assessment to say that the Frank Thomas signing was only about OBP... and um... Steve Rogers is a .500 pitcher, which I once heard was a bad thing... and I'm not sure if I'd put Wetteland over Henke or Walker/Oliver over Molitor/Winfield (even if only considering their careers in Canada), and... what else? Nah... that was pretty much it. Amazing what a decent month can do for everyone's mood. [rimshot?]

Oh yeah, and according to someone who commented on one of our posts, Griff chatted with Chuck Swirsky on the Fan590 this week. Have you seen this? Have you heard about this? . . . Evidently he said some insightful things about the state of the media and admitted that he reads blogs-- even ones that tend to dis him. [rimshot] (Hi Rich! Um... we were really sure nobody was or ever would be reading us when we made it kind of a thing to always pick on you. Which isn't to say we found it at all difficult to find tremendously ridiculous things you'd written to pick apart . . .)

Hale's got some wicked Pitch F/X action showing the um... differences between the pitches being called for Mike Mussina on Wednesday and the way the umpire treated Jesse Litsch. [rimshot]

Alex Rios seems to be coming out of his slump lately. Have you seen this? Have you heard about this? . . . He's now tied with Ichiro for the longest current hitting streak against any one team, now with hits in 26 straight against the Yankees. Ichiro's streak is against the Royals. Pussy. [rimshot]
