Go Ahead and Fuck This Up, Boston

Manny Ramirez has been back in the news lately because of some recent comments he made regarding his contract status. The Red Sox have one-year club options worth $20 million for both 2009 and 2010, and have given no indication as to what their plans are. This uncertainty prompted Ramirez to speak to the Boston Herald yesterday.

“I want no more (expletive) where they tell you one thing and behind your back they do another thing,” Ramirez told The Herald. “I think I’ve earned that respect, for a team to sit down with me and tell me this is what we want, this is what we want to do.”

I don't know what was excised where the "(expletive)" is, so let's just assume that it's: "Motherfucking bullshit cock fucking".

Well, not one to just accept Manny's accusations of motherfucking bullshit cock fucking on his part, Sox owner John Henry responded to the Herald today.

“I find remarks that we have been anything other than completely straightforward to be personally offensive,” Henry wrote. “Manny has been a crucial part of two world championships. I do not believe we would have won either without him. He has never played a more important role than he has thus far this year.”

Let's hope Manny only reads the first sentence. (I'd make a joke about Manny being lazy or something here, but fuck that. Manny is fucking awesome.)

Seriously though, fuck this up, Boston. It would really do us a solid here in his favourite city. He's probably not worth another $40m anyway, right? Seriously. Fuck it up. Let this drama fester and get ugly until there's no choice left but to part ways with Manny and let him fulfill his lifelong dream to play in Toronto. Go on.

2009 Jays DH? Playoffs!

Thanks for the shout-out on Podcast #10.

All the signs have been pointing that Boston won't use that option. Manny needs to play in Toronto next year.

Could the Jays come anywhere close to being able to afford Manny?

And wouldn't the Sox be better off picking up the option and trading him? Someone will give Boston more than a Type A free agent package for Manny for $40M over 2, right?

The Jays can afford anybody they want. Ted Rogers owns the team. It's completely up to him how much of his money he wants to commit to this operation, but he can certainly afford pretty much anything.

I'm rapidly finding Manny harder and harder to hate. It's not fair! Can't he, like, get caught touching a kid or something, so my disgust could be justified?

Manny would move a lot of merch. I don't want to get my hopes up too high, but this would be the greatest thing to ever happen in this city.

Even if the Sox let him go, he'd still cost at least 15 mil per season as an FA. And he'll probably ask for at least 3 years. Is a past-his-prime 36 year old Manny worth that? Maybe, if Uncle Ted is willing to significantly raise the payroll to accommodate him, then I'm all for it. But at the current payroll? No way.

I've never found Manny hard to love. He's fucking beautiful, and I would love to see him with the Jays, although if he's just a DH, we'd miss so much of what makes him such a joy to watch.

I loved the time they had to hold the game up because Manny had gone through the door on the Green Monster during a pitching change and hadn't made it back.

The high-five of the fan was pretty funny.

Then there was the time he ran right past a ground ball, but his hat fell of as he ran by and slowed the ball's progress slightly.

I also remember one time (playoffs against the Yankees maybe) when he tried to dive for a ball, but instead he took a gigantic divot out of the turf with his leg and did an awkward-looking somersault.

He'd be the perfect mentor for Snider.

That attempt at a sliding catch makes me crack up every damn time I see it (it's on one of those sports bloopers commercials.) Manny trying to be slick... I'm kind of chuckling right now. Thank you, Manny.

If we're going to spend huge money on someone, why do we have to spend it on washed-up (or soon to be) washed-up players? As long as huge money is going to be spent, sign someone in their prime, like the Sox did with Manny (or A-Rod, or Miguel Cabrera, etc.). Get them in their prime years!! And proven performers, not like Wells or Rios, neither of whom had a very long track record of consistent greatness.

What do you know about Manny Ramirez? . . . Did you know the guy doesn't really like baseball that much? Do you know the guy doesn't have a passion to play the game that much? How much do you know about the player?

Stoeten said...

I like the idea, but I just don't think those guys are out there. Whoever fits that bill is unlikely to be allowed to hit free agency?

$20M is worth this play alone - highlight of the year.

The dugout reactions are almost as good as the play.

Stick it to Red Sox Nation Manny - Just keep being Manny!

I can't be the only one who (still) hates Manny, can I? The guy is such a goof.

Not just yeah but Hell Yeah! Consider me on board this bandwagon!

He exists Stoeten, and his name is Mark Teixeira. He's going to want 7/150, and that would take him through his age 35 season. He's exactly what this team needs. Although Jays fans would go apeshit every year when he stinks it up in April and May.

Manny is awesome. We need Manny. Perfect fit.

Teix has got a career .900 OPS, Manny has a career 1.000 OPS. Manny wins, as always.

And do I have to remind you about the intangible factor that Manny has?

Ari said...

And he will be 37 instead of 34, the last time he posted an OPS that high. Teixiera is the better hitter by now, and the team needs the LH bat (switch) more. Not to mention he combines it with excellent defense.

That J.P. quotation will never cease to crack me up.

There's one very significant reason why the Jays shouldn't sign Manny and here it is: when he inevitably doesn't produce as he has in the past because of age and injuries, it'll be another reason for "fans" to claim the Jays are EXACTLY like the Leafs. i.e. they sign too many veterans who are "passed their prime" and "not worth their contract".

I can just see the comment section on the Globe and Mail website: "Manny's signing was a lot like the Darcy Tucker signing...."

Stoeten said...

Tucker has not anywhere remotely close to the same pedigree as Manny.

Ari, you're right, but still time for an extension on Teixeira, though-- and it wouldn't surprise me if he gets move somewhere and re-ups. Besides, the chances of the Jays being able to get him are extremely slim. Manny, because of his desire to be here, is different-- assuming he makes the market, which I certainly wouldn't bank on.

rob ducey's nephew said...

Stoeten: I think that might have been part of the point of my comment.

Just sayin'....

Stoeten said...

Upon further review, I think you're right.

Manny has a higher OPS than Teix. Manny wins again. You fail Ari. Epic Fail.

Sarah, how can you hate Manny?!??! Hate Schilling, hate Papelbon, hate Varitek, hate Drew, Youkilis, Pedroia, Ellbury . But not Manny, he's too much fun. If you don't take the time to enjoy Manny, you're missing out on life.

DT said...

Ellbury is (duh) a nickname for Jacoby Ellsbury. In case you though I misspelled or something.

adams said...

There's too much irony in your correction to even describe.

Manny would be too old by then. I totally agree that we need a pre-late-30s Manny. Don't know that I agree that we need a late-30s Manny.

Anonymous said...

Wow, I hate Papelbon.

Manny is infinitely better than that tool.

Stoeten said...

"what they're plans are"???????? Did I seriously write that? Jesus, what a hack.

Stoeten said...

Hey Ari, I think Blair referenced you here:

Desperate fans have demanded that the Toronto Blue Jays sign Barry Bonds to save this season of disappointment and missed opportunities, while others now dream of an unrealistic run at free-agent-to-be Mark Teixeira.

Anonymous said...

Any one remember that time in the playoffs when Manny robbed villain du jour Miguel Cairo of a Home Run? He threw the ball in, took off his glove and gave Cairo the double guns.

I'm getting hard just thinking about it.

sarah said...

dt, I actually dig Papelbon quite a bit. On the Manny front, the simple reasoning is that he embodies the Red Sox to me and I hate them more than I hate any team in pro-sports, haha. I hate them, I hate him, I hate the Manny Being Manny bullshit, I hate his stupid baggy pants, I hate his random declarations that he'd like to play for the Yankees, I hate his weirdly bad abilities to be a teammate and good sport, and I hate his stupid champion arm-raise when he hits jacks. Mostly I hate the BoSox.

I say we offer Manny two years and 30 mill and not a fucking penny more. Move Lind to first and Manny and Snider can DH and play LF. The savings on Overbay (might have to eat 4 mill) plus the 24 mill saved on Burnett and the 10 mill on Thomas would easily allow us to sign Manny and maybe trade for JJ Hardy or sign Furcal to an incentive-laden deal. 1-9 this would be a dominant lineup come 2010: Furcal, Rios, Wells, Ramirez, Snider, Arencibia, Lind, Rolen, Hill/Scott Campbell. Plus Halladay, Mcgowan, Marcum, Cecil and maybe Litsch. That is a fucking playoff team - no fucking doubt about it

Stedron said...

I hate how Papelbon turns his mouth into an asshole before every pitch. He looks like a tard.

Anonymous said...

stoeten, you yourself has been whining about not signing Bonds until recently. Don't be all false modest now that it's for sure not gonna happen. I on the other knew it would've never happened in a million years and never lost sleep over it.

Sarah, you ain't alone. I was sitting over the Sox dugout at the Robbers Dome in '06 and yelled at him to "pull up his fucking pants". The crowd got a chuckle out of it and so did Manny - stepped back from the plate looked down, cracked a smile then tapped his helmet or something before stepping back up.

I'm not even sure if he speaks English but he has a bit of that George Bell/Robbie Alomar cockiness that endures spitting...not the umpire type of spitting, just the sunflower seed type...well you kow what I mean.

Lloyd the Barber said...

He shouldn't embody the Red Sox to anyone. They've been trying for years to get rid of him (irrevocable waivers??) but his contract and performance make him impossible to move. The Nation can't stand him either.

BRING HIM TO CANADA, we'll love and value him for who he is.
