Radio Magic: Godfrey on Swirsky - Point Form Edition

Paul Godfrey showed up on the Fan590's Chuck Swirsky show this afternoon. Here are some highlights, including the heartwarming, ringing endorsement of JP at the bottom:

- Godfrey blames the media for not having anything better to write about than the Halladay comments. "You have the media jumping on an issue that I don't think is an issue at all."

- Roy, he says, not only spoke for himself, but his teammates and everybody in the front office.

- "We're not out of it yet, but we have a fairly big mountain to climb to get back in there." (No shit)

- Godfrey said that they don't just need to "get this thing going" for Roy's sake, but for a number of reasons-- like maintaining the ability to get free agents.

- "The last 15-18 games show that they can compete."

- "Cito has brought a little more discipline to the team-- that's not a knock at John Gibbons. Sometimes a change for the sake of change gets people to re-focus."

- "You can't say we've fallen back to the pack, because we've never been close to the Yankees and the Red Sox."

- "If they can continue to play the way the played against the Yankees in the previous series before the all-star break, they can make up a lot of ground."

- "Why would we shop AJ Burnett around? The minute we pick up the phone and call someone, do you not think we lower AJ Burnett's value?"

- Injuries are not an excuse. "When we had everybody there we weren't winning at that point."

- No comment on whether the second half of this year will determine whetther Ricciardi returns. "The fact is, JP Ricciardi is the General Manager of the Blue Jays, he's got a contract, and at this point in time we're going to continue with that."

25 rational and reasonable comments:

Hey Parkes, that's eight straight posts from me, lazy fuckface.

Nice interview on Global, Drunk Kays Fans.

Swirsky's response to every comment: ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

Man, I'm going to miss that guy next season.

Blanton reportedly traded to the Phils.

AJ may be staying yay!

I love how GM's are so macho. We can't go and shop players with any honesty, we have to inquire about someone on your team first. Looooooosers.

Does Blanton going to the Phillies increase AJ's trade value or decrease it? He's pretty much the last decent pitcher who's rumored to be on the block, which would seem to increase it because teams might be desperate to get a pitcher. But there are also no other teams who seem to be pursuing pitching, which of course decreases it.

I kind of hope he doesn't get dealt. The most exciting things down the stretch might be Doc's quest for the Cy and seeing if AJ can make himself into a Type A FA.

Stoeten said...

Maybe it does both? One of the most sense-making partners is gone, but the pool of decent available pitchers is a little more dry now too.

How about Burnett, Eckstein and Stairs to the Dodgers for a boatload?

The Manute Bol Experience said...

That would be sweet. Kill three birds with one stone. And it at least sort of makes sense because the Dodgers could use all those guys.

What a trade by Billy Beane, he's a fucking genius. Blanton's numbers may look similar to AJ's, but take a look at his peripherals and what he does on the road away from the coliseum. He isn't a very good pitcher, he just throws a lot of mediocre innings.

If this is the kind of package they can get for AJ (and I'd assume they'd be able to get better), the Jays have to make this trade.

For Snider lovers, heres a video of him winning the AA homerun derby last night.

Jeez only $1000 for winning the AA derby? I mean I'd have been happy to win $1000 at age 20, but it makes me feel kinda sad for the career minor leaguers.

There's a story on Wayne of CFTO news tonight

adams said...

Not CFTO... that's the national news broadcast, brother. This story has hit the big time. :)

adams said...

Oh christ... they teased the broadcast with two stories, the top story and Wayne's.

The top story led. Clearly, Wayne's will close the broadcast, thereby forcing me to watch a half-hour of this crap.

the game:

Yeah, Blanton has been fucking me in the ass all year in fantasy. He's not that great. Take him out of the Coliseum and put him in Philly's little bandbox and this looks like it could end badly.

I don't understand how Beane keeps pulling this shit off. Is he a slick talking used car salesman type? The other GM's just can't seem to resist his charm. That side of him didn't really come across in Moneyball, not to me anyways.

Jesus, not exactly a ringing endorsment. That's as close to saying he's getting shit canned as it gets without actually saying it.

This is a great trade for Philly, even if Blanton is at best a solid 3-4 option. A guy you can depend on for 200+ innings and making his turn every five days always has value, especially when he's cost-controlled through 2010. Cardenas was slipping on their prospect charts and was blocked anyways by Utley forever, with D not good enough to go anywhere else.

But yes, Beane is an absolute master, and this haul is awesome for the A's. I love how he is constantly wheeling and dealing and that he never pays his own free agents. He either trades them or takes their picks. The As basically only own players in years 0-7. The rest are just solutions off a scrap heap.

Greg Norman leading the British Open.

The last time he won a major-1993.
The last time the Jays won the series-1993.

What does this mean? Probably nothing.

Beau said...

Probably means Norman is gonna have it locked up and then choke on his own cock . . . which, of course, happened to him regularly.

Marcum threw for hitless innings yesterday and struck out 6 for Class A Dunedin. Jays are deciding whether to pitch him 1 more or call him up
