Ricciardi: McGowan Has a Shoulder "Tear"

JP Ricciardi, taking calls on the Fan590's post game show, gave Wilner an update on Dustin McGowan's MRI results, saying that there is a "tear" in his shoulder. They will send him to Dr. Timothy Kremchek, who performed BJ Ryan's Tommy John surgery, but they hope that it won't be necessary for Dustin to go under the knife.

That's what he said: "tear". It's not jumping to conclusions if he said it, right?

He also just said "I'm amazed how fast things get out, " with regard to the media. True that, eh? And then he said something else that I was totally just thinking! (You'll have to take my word on that one, though.)

Then, he was asked to clarify it-- and said "it's a tear in the rotator... in the cuff area." Gold! So... um? Not quite ready to say torn rotator cuff?

However, he qualified this by pointing out that a lot of major league pitchers pitch through tears of one kind or another (er... labrum or rotator cuff, most likely). It's still tender, and (again) they don't know whether surgery will be necessary.

I think they also just said they found DB Cooper (the Jays' first draft pick this year-- which, now that I think about it, is a pretty shitty nickname for the guy because it makes it seem like his destiny is to pull a Hinske (or is that a Wells? Or a Rios?) and take a huge sack of money and then just disappear)... all the way in Lansing.

And then Jeff called in and not only proclaimed himself the number one Jays fan in Winnipeg, but he also totally sounded just like David from Saskatchewan! Prairie cat fight?

It's that kind of comment with Ricciardi that makes me think Halladay pitches through injuries all the time. It would definitely explain the decline in his K rate (until this year!).

And to make matters worse, Wayne the beer guy got canned.

no way - I saw Ice Cold at the Argos home opener.

WHAT? how/when did Wayne get fired??!

I think the only laughing matter in all this is this comment in the MLB story..."Kansas City GM Dayton Moore is also among those who dread hearing a pitcher has a torn rotator cuff."....what kind of sick bastard likes hearing someone tore their rotator cuff?

I just got home from work and all this news is hitting my pride a little too hard. I was getting all worked up earlier in the morn over JP saying that Travis Snyder is going to be a September callup (is anyone else as confused as I am about this shit? Lind doesn't get called up when we need him but we're going to call up Snyder when we don't? he's 20, has less than 300 PA at AA...why rush him? but Lind, JP wants to keep in AAA for 2008?)That was confusing, the McGowan news is just painful.

Well, I was hoping to hear this line tonight...but since no one else wants to, don't mind if I do.

PLAYOFFS!

tonight at the Orioles game I heard an usher telling this guy that wayne got fired. Later, i verified her story by asking another beer vendor if this was true. He said, "Well that's what happens when you do something illegal." The only think I could take that to mean is that he served beer to underage kids. He'll be sorely missed.

Burnett apparently had an emergency root canal less than 24 hours before this start.

With Dusty's Wolverine-esque pork chops, shouldn't he have super human regenerative abilities? He'll be back next week.

I'd get involved in this prairie battle royal, but what kind of nerd proclaims himself "the number one Jays fan in Winnipeg". Frig off, Jeff.

Ice Cold better NOT be fired. I will kick some Rogers Centre managerial ass if one of the lone bright spots in the average trip to a Jays game has been taken away from me!

We are looking into the story-- we have some connections. I'm not above starting a shitstorm, personally.

News went from bad to worse for the Jays when McGowan's imaging showed a torn rotator cuff. He's done for the season, leaving him with the question of choosing surgery or rehab, though the team is still officially saying that he could return in a month. That just doesn't happen with this type of injury. If McGowan is able to avoid the operating table, he could be back by next spring, but it's a coin-flip proposition, and there always seems to be some cost. McGowan has had injury troubles previously, making this one of those slow and insidious injuries that remind us that somewhere on the kinetic chain, there's always going to be a weak link. If the Jays weren't there already, McGowan's injury should push them into "next year" mode. We'll have to see if that includes McGowan, who could lose much of 2009 if he needs surgery.
