Two for Tuesday
We sometimes like to joke about Batter's Box, and steal their pictures, and we probably don't link to them nearly as much as we should-- but today I can't possibly ignore the amazing work they've done, putting together a positional analysis of how teams in the majors have either improved or regressed from last year to this. Some Jays-related highlights:
The biggest jump in production among NL third basemen (143.8%) belongs to the St. Louis Cardinals. Uh-oh. Though it's true that the Greatest Blue Jay Ever had a rough year last year, that's... well. . . that's not good. It should be noted, though, that Rolen is actually producing 90.3% of what Glaus and whichever shitbags filled in for him last year did. So... it's maybe not so bad when you factor in Rolen's defense and the fact that Glaus would have surely lost more games to injury if he was still playing on turf (right? right???).
The biggest improvement at the shortstop position among AL teams belongs to... uh... the Toronto Blue Jays. This of course is due more to the fact that Clayton and McDonald were just brutal with the stick last year, and less to do with the offensive exploits of Scutaro and Eckstein. Way, way, way less.
The Jays have fallen off the map at DH (still not as badly as Seattle, though), the corner outfield spots, and second base. Which... well... might explain why they can't score any fucking runs.
OK. I think I've aped enough of their work. Go check it out-- definitely an interesting read.
Parkes, I Take Back My Defense of John Lott
Hale has already got to this over at the Mockingbird, but it's provoked too much of my ire to not mention it in this little corner of the interweb as well.
Here is what JP Ricciardi told the Manchester (NH) Union Leader-- a paper whose calls he actually takes, apparently-- about the Jays' shortstop situation going forward:
"We think (Justin) Jackson ultimately will be our shortstop, but he's obviously a ways away. We've got (Marco) Scutaro for another year. We've got Johnny (MacDonald) for another year. We can hold the fort down with those guys, and you never know what you'll get in the way of a trade or something else."
And here's how the Post summarized that statement:
"The GM also said he expects 2007 draft pick Justin Jackson, now at Low-A Lansing, to become Toronto’s regular shortstop in several years. Meanwhile, he looks to Marco Scutaro to play short through next year."
Like, what the fucking fuck? Do I even need to go on a tirade over this? It's just plain, obviously, indisputably wrong. (Did they think it was going in the Post's editorial section or something? Zing!)

I almost quit reading Batters Box after some twit in the comments section said that the Jays payroll wasn't "particularly parsimonious."
Thank god they misquoted him. Nice to know JP isn't a total retard.
As for the Batter's Box, I like most of what they do. I'm maybe not quite hardcore enough to require daily updates from the farm, but most of their minor league content is greatly appreciated because its hard to find good stuff elsewhere. But who the hell cares about those hall of names teams? I can't fathom why that guy puts so much time into those.
I used to read Batter's Box religiously. Then it got press in the mainstream media because it was *that* good, which attracted the ESPN-style commenters and from there it went downhill.
Eventually the moron commenters drove away Coach and some of the other First Generation Box writers and the content started to get watered down. Now I'll pop by the site if I'm bored out of my mind at work or a particularly big baseball event happened. But I'm the same way with DJF, too.
Good podcast this week. I think it was the first time I listend to the entire show.
That's sobriety for you.
Don't people know that they're supposed to be shittered when listening? Elsewise it's like being the DD at a sausage party at your parents house, which is full of old chinese china.
I guess if you're sober the drunken podcasts aren't as good . . .
Battersbox is slowly dying. The minor league comments almost outnumber the major league ones. I think only ten people make ninety percent of the comments.

Lott's synopsis was actually very close. But way to make a crappy attempt at political wit.
I saw where Barajas was setting up and I knew Markakis was going to hit that homer.
this is pathetic fire everybody
I used to read battersbox pretty regularly until I realized that every person who writes a comment on there is willing to spend 5 hours working on a fucking Excel graph to back up their point. That along with the "Hall of Names" just destroyed that site.
Leave it to the prime minister of defence to get the big hit. I would have shit pants on purpose if he hit the grand slam.
Wow, Marcum sucked tonight.
Adam Lind, however, did not.
Lind homers, Jays regain lead 9-7. This is too much. Why don't they just decide when they're gonna lose this one ?
Yeah, triple short of the cycle, with an extra single to boot.
According to the MASN guys, Cito was saying they might put Lind as the cleanup hitter, but he'd have to prove he could hit lefties.
when i think of the orioles, i think of crap. but i just noticed they have 7 guys with 40+ rbi, compared to our 2, and 6 guys with 10+ HR, compared to our 0.
Wilkerson !
the guy does just enough to not completely suck balls
yeeesh
Maybe Ryan doesn't believe it's really a save unless you leave the bases loaded
in other news, andy marte is hitting better. he's raised his avg from 125 to 187 in the last two weeks while hitting 10 for 36. (12 SOs though).
"According to the MASN guys, Cito was saying they might put Lind as the cleanup hitter, but he'd have to prove he could hit lefties."
I don't care where Lind hits as long as it's higher than 7. Our best hitter needs to get as many at bats as possible.

Just watching the Boston-Seattle game...Jose Vidro might just be the worst hitter in the majors, and yet he still has a full time DH job. That is all.
"Do us all a favour and retire!"
-an angry Mariners fan yells at Vidro.
So... Adam Lind for cleanup? OK. I'm in.
Yep. Turns out I do still laugh every time people mention Royce Clayton.
