The J.P. Ricciardi Bullshit Translator 3000

After yesterday's trade deadline, I am not looking forward to seeing this month's electric bill. I had so much material to input into my J.P. Ricciardi Bullshit Translator 3000 that the machine came dangerously close to overheating, forcing me to crank the AC just to keep it operational.

First up there were rumours of Toronto's interest in Jason Bay, and while I thought that the Pirates asking price was far too high for the Jays to be interested, especially considering that our outfield is fairly set for the future, the JPRBT 3000 calmed my nerves over their involvement.

After inputting the proposed trade into my machine, buzzers, sirens and lights went off like I had won the grand prize from a penny slot machine. It seems that Toronto's involvement was total bullshit, and the phone call that Jays management made to the Pirates happened almost at the exact same time as phone calls directed to media members like Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to complain about the asking price. The phone call was entirely a PR stunt to make it look as though the Jays were interested in bringing home a good Canadian boy in Jason Baysy. Oh Ricciardi, you're a wily one.

Of course these so called rumours were followed up by supposed interest in Seattle's Raul Ibanez. Thirty-six year old Raul Ibanez who becomes a free agent at the end of this year. Yeah, you were shaking your head too, huh? Well, think about what the JPRBT 3000 was about to do. At least the human body has mechanisms that force you to pass out before your brain explodes. There's no such switch for the JPRBT 3000.

It was suggested that the proposed deal involved two players on the Jays current 25 man roster, and names like Brandon League and David Purcey were bandied about. In the end, nothing came of the deal, supposedly because the Mariners backed out. Isn't it sort of funny that thanks to Lee Pelekoudas, the Toronto Blue Jays were actually winners on deadline day.

While my esteemed colleague Andrew Stoeten was busy giving hand jobs and hand shakes to former Jays beat writer Geoff Baker for his studious analysis that J.P. Ricciardi would desire Ibanez for optics only, I was busy inputting all this information into the JPRBT 3000.

What it spit out: "Thanks for the newsflash Baker. Did you really have to consult your Toronto contacts to realize this? And what the fuck are you talking about television numbers for? Yes, Rogers depends on television numbers on its own station because it sees the Jays as little more than a marketing tool, but how does that make the numbers less important to teams that need television numbers for direct income?"

What Ricciardi said:

We had some really good talks with Seattle, they were pretty intense and pretty in-depth. We thought at one point there was a possibility to get something done there, but it just didn't come to fruition.

We were ready to go forward. I think at the end of the day they just didn't feel as comfortable going forward to finish off the trade. It was just something that didn't come to fruition. Both parties worked hard. At the end of the day they probably weren't as comfortable with making the trade as we were. That happens.

I don't think we're in the middle ground. I think we're in it. When you look up and you're under eight...within striking distance of the wild-card and there's still two months to play, I don't we ever thought about us as 'Hey we're going to be sellers.' We've taken on the thought process that if we continue to add without taking anything away from us going forward, that we would try to do that.

What the JPRBT 3000 spit out:

We tried to work out a deal with the Seattle Mariners over the last few days so that I could placate a bunch of moronic fans out there who still believe the Jays actually have a shot at making the playoffs. Please allow me to address those fans right now and talk for the next few paragraphs about how, even though anyone who has ever watched baseball over the course of a season knows that we're out of it, we're still right in the middle of things because I'm such a good GM.

Please keep buying tickets and watching your Rogers Blue Jays on Rogers Sportsnet. Please. I'm fucking begging you, please.

Depending on the players being given up, it's actually not that much of a cost to the Jays. Pay a third of Ibanez's salary for the rest of the season and convince some fans that you're still making a push. In the off season, offer him arbitration for the next year. If he accepts, you have an above average bat for one more season as a stop gap until Travis Snider is ready. If he doesn't accept, you get a draft pick or two, and some freed up cash to go after Manny Ramirez.

This is the dark time of the season where we the reality knob that's been gradually turning right since April takes a big jump forward. Everbody get ready for mediocrity!

And it sounds like the other GMs were dissing JP with those 2 negotiations. I can't imagine that he would be respected around the league after Dunnigate

i'm surprised it didn't go nuts over the whole purcey/league thing. do you really thing the M's back out of the deal if it's two arms like that going their way?

JP was going to take Ibanez for eckstein and frasor or something and the M's backed out because they lose that deal all day

Is anyone else having trouble accessing our home page . . . like the DJF site?

Everytime I hit my bookmark, it redirects me to a Rogers error page.

I'd really like to think this is some sort of conspiracy.

It's mind bottling that the two of you clowns are posting as if this Ibanez trade was a bad thing when you STILL have no fucking clue what the offer was.

And enough with this Geoff Baker cockfest...a year ago you guys probably railed on him for that fucking White Jays article, but now he goes on your podcast and all of a sudden you are deepthroating him. Stop selling out (like inviting Griffin too!).

Dustin Parkes said...

How's it going Spencer?

That's weird. I thought I criticized Baker for stating the obvious.

Also, if you actually read what I wrote, you might have seen that I thought getting Ibanez wasn't a bad idea, it was just that I thought the motivation behind it had less to do with improving the team than placating fans into staying interested.

I also used the exact words "depending on the players being given up."

But thanks for reading Spence.

Ari said...

I'm with this mysterious Spence.

All season we have been pissed off at the likes of Wilkerson and Mench getting ABs...but when JP makes an effort to improve the offense by picking up a solid LH bat that the team could so obviously use, you come out firing saying that it's a move to placate idiot fans.

Stop talking about this trade in a negative light, because you simply don't know anything about it. And if you are going to assume, assume that Toronto was giving up Litsch & League and that this trade woulda been a steal had it been consummated. You can say that you used the words "depending on the players being given up", but the fact is that you were demeaning the trade and just covering your tracks there. Stop.

I say that ever since JP so unceremoniously shot down Zaun it's open season to say whatever you want about our Blue Jays GM commander in chief. At least Zaun has a awesome website. JP is a little gremlin who cooks up evil plans like prank cell-phone-call-apologies and trading away our pitching staff and minor league hitting prospects to Bawston to make him popular in his hometown before he quits !

I so know this is true !

Keeping people interested in the Jays is part of his job. If toronto had gone on a 10 year losing streak like the rays did, there wouldn't even be a team in toronto anymore.

derek said...

Agreed. But not at a cost.

Moving for Ibanez would be ridiculous if it meant giving up two players for a guy who could leave at the end of the year.

Ibanez makes sense for a contender which the Jays most certainly are not.

Anonymous said...

Ari, do you really think the Jays should pick someone up to help them for the rest of this year?

No matter who they give up, it's wrong.

i hate spencer said...

Yes, it's part of a GM's job to maintain interest but not at the expense of the team or its future.

I imagine there are some metrics or milestones that Ricciardi has to achieve. Both in terms of baseball record and bums in seats, and probably television ratings as well.

The question is, is he thinking short term to reach these goals?

ari said...

"Ari, do you really think the Jays should pick someone up to help them for the rest of this year?

Not if the players they give up are easily replaceable by players within your own system (like League and Litsch are) and the guy you are getting can bring you compensation draft picks in return. I don't know why this point keeps getting lost on so many people. Call JP whatever you want, HE IS NOT STUPID, and has NEVER made a bad trade, so why you guys are all jumping the gun now and taking shits on him for wanting Ibanez is WAY beyond me. I have complete faith in Ricciardi's ability to wheel-and-deal. In season team management? Not so much.

daryl said...

Come on! It would have been completely cynical on JP's part to make a move for Ibanez to "compete for this year" when management already called this season a wash a month ago (did everyone forget that?)

Anonymous said...

Ibanez makes sense for a contender which the Jays most certainly are not.

Team that will not make playoffs trades for draft picks why is this so difficult to understand?

Dustin Parkes said...

Yeah, I can agree with the move if the Jays give up little to acquire Ibanez, and he rejects arbitration and everything works out and you get two draft picks and sign Manny, but what happens if you give up two ML players for him, he accepts arbitration and you're on the hook for $8 million next season. There's a lot of potential for this to end messy, and it's just not worth it to have a better record this year.

Dustin Parkes said...

^^ The two picks aren't automatic.

Anonymous said...

hey quars let's argue about minutae instead of moving on

ari said...

8m? Sorry Parkes, he makes 5.5m this year, and you can make up to a 20% decline in arbitration. Where you come up with a 50% increase is beyond me, but it's nothing new for you to talk out of your ass.

At the very worst, Ibanez would have been a good option at DH for next year without having to break the bank like the 20m it would take to get Manny here. At the best, you give up 2 replaceable young players, get 2 solid months of production from Ibanez to keep you "competitive" and then pick up some picks when he leaves for a multi-year deal.

Ian H. said...

Does Rogers own BLOGGER? Sometimes I've noticed that my DJF bookmarks shows up as a Rogers logo .... weird.

Anonymous said...

Ibanez signed a two-year extension to a three year deal in 06.

7-8 million in arb isn't outrageous to anticipate.

Parkes was dealing in worst case scenario versus your best case one to point out that it's risky.

Ari said...

The best part about that arbitration salary is that it isn't guaranteed. So I'm pretty sure you could drop Ibanez at any time and not be on tab for the contract, just like the Jays did with Reed.

I think 8m for a 37 year old DH (he's an awful OF) who the year before should finish with something like 75r 22hr 90rbi is a tad pricey to be awarded in arbitration. I think the Jays could point to the 10m Frank Thomas made as a free agent coming off a year where he was 4th in MVP voting to say that 8m is excessive for the above line.

I guess it would depend on who would win the arbitration, because Ibanez's # would probably be in that area.

Anonymous said...

The two picks aren't automatic.

If he thinks he would get a 50% pay increase from arb, then he would go for the open market.

The only people who accept arb are people who would get offered less than the 'max 20% paycut' on the open market.

20% is the maximum decrease, but something serious has to happen for a player to see his salary cut at all. Heck, even players who were injured the entire season usually get a bit of a bump for inflation.

If there was a guarantee that Ibanez wouldn't accept arbitration and we would get a first round pick this might make sense. But what's the point in trading a couple of young players who have made it to the bigs for what could be a second-rounder and a supplemental pick? Trading young and questionable for 4-5 years off and even more questionable. Yayyy.

And if Ibanez decides that he likes the city and isn't going to get a lot more on the FA market anyway, UGH. A declining, average left-handed DH to replace our declining, slightly below-average left-handed DH.

The reason the Jays don't have any black players JP brought in on the team or in the system is that he's hellbent on selecting successful players out of college: not high school kids.

It's not a race issue, it's a socioeconomic issue: black players are more likely to declare for the draft early out of high school so they can cash in and help themselves and their families, whereas well-off, upper class white kids are more likely to get an education in college and "season" their games a bit more.

Or... Orlando Hudson calling JP a "pimp" still stings.

Either way...
