The J.P. Ricciardi Bullshit Translator V.2

With help from The Blue Jay Hunter, version two of the JPRBT 3000 was rolled out over the weekend. Fortunately for us, some typical Ricciardi bullshit was also rolled out, and then flung on unsuspecting fans via a recent story in the Toronto Star by our favourite New York boulevardier, Cathal Kelly.

In the column, Ricciardi makes the following claims in bold. The JPRBT 3000 v.2 translation is in italics:

I don't really know how much we're going to look to spend. I mean, we'll do some things. But we'll probably be more judicious in how we do it.

I haven't been told if I'm coming back next season, but if I do, I'm sure that I won't be given an increased budget or have the autonomy I've had in the past.

[The Yankees] are always going to do things that we can't do. But we're pretty excited about what we have here and what we have coming. We're probably more set going forward. Obviously, we want to improve our offence.

It's important that I always reference the difference in payroll between the Jays and the two evil empires in the American League East. I realize this season is lost, so I should probably focus attention on the future of the ballclub and then, maybe I should hint at what we're going to try to improve in the offseason. Yeah. That'll do the trick. And make people forget that this has been yet another disappointing year.

We'd like to upgrade DH, but if Travis (Snider) takes over in left field and (Adam) Lind becomes the DH, or vice versa, we might not have to go that route. We'd like to upgrade (at shortstop). But if we had to go with (Marco) Scutaro and (John) McDonald, we'd be happy with that.

You guys all get the fact that I'm keeping my fingers crossed on Snider being Major League ready? Well, I'm going to try to convince you that I didn't get him up to the big club as a means of saving my job, but rather to evaluate him and see if he can save us money in the offseason. It's unlikely, but why not try it?

I'm probably not going to be able to bring in the free agents I want to, so I'm going to lay the groundwork now that we're okay at positions we're probably not. This should also help me when I have to explain to my bosses, whoever they may be, why I should be brought back for another season at the end of the year.

Look at the offensive numbers this year. It's like, bizarro. There's a lot of guys whose numbers have been good in the past, but they're not as good this year. So I think until we get to the point where we've seen those guys play another year or so, get a little bit of a track record, saying, `Okay, this is what those guys really are.' You can fill in the blanks. I'm not going to say the words. There's been a lot of false numbers in the past.

Steroids are bad. A lot of Major Leaguers were using performance enhancing drugs and that's skewered free agent contracts. Hey, that will be another good excuse for not making any free agent splashes this offseason.

Let's see. I've got playing in Canada, other big spenders in the division, injuries to pitchers, players not fulfilling expectations, and now no basis to judge free agent talent. Alright! My excuses are really rounding out nicely for the coming year.

There's a group coming in behind (the current roster) that's going to be really exciting. In two years, one of those kids could just go through the roof. It wouldn't surprise me if a bunch of them did. I like 'em all.

Look it, no one really knows how these prospects I've gotten are going to turn out, but while the experts are saying that I've got four or five great players on my hands, I'm going to make the most of it, and promote the living fuck out of them. Especially, when this season is giving me nothing at all to talk about.

We're at the point where you want to be as an organization. Now the last thing you need to do is be a playoff team.

We've underperformed and the organization is nowhere near where I thought it would be at the beginning of the season. Thank God that some of our prospects have had great years. If I'm back next season, I really have to make the playoffs just to keep my job. For realious this time.

Okay. I admit. I'm being hard on Ricciardi. Or rather the machine I designed and manufactured is being hard on the Blue Jays GM. In all fairness, it should be pointed out that even with yet another disappointing season slouching toward a finale, the organization isn't in the shitter as much as some of us let on.

The Jays have some truly excellent prospects on the farm, and the players who should be the key perfomers on a playoff-bound team are locked up or under team control. Even our weakest filled positions have an upside, be it John McDonald's glove or Rod Barajas' Spanish sounding name and occasional power.

I tend to teeter back and forth on this issue, but once again it comes down to asking whether or not the players on this team are simply not good enough or if they're underachieving. With no proper DH for most of the first half of the season, it's easy to say they weren't good enough. However, things have changed with the emergence of Lind as a middle of the order hitter and the potential of Snider contributing to the big club next season.

I suppose the new question that we could potentially be asking ourselves during the offseason is, "Will that be enough?" Judging by his comments here (which like all Ricciardi comments should have a "for what it's worth" asterisk attached to them), if Ricciardi is back again next year, he may be banking yet again on this year's team merely underachieving.

it's still too early for JP to definitively say what he plan will be going in to the offseason so i fully expect loads of bullshit like this, and you should too

The bullshit translator appears to be functioning as it should.

However, for fun and profit I would suggest that you market this device to other perennial also-rans, because almost each and every one of those statements can be made all of their GM's: "we have great prospects!, we had injuries, guys had off-years, steroids are bad, we don't spend the most money". It's depressing to think we are not that far from being the Reds or Pirates, but it might be true. Boiling it all down - like them, we need a lot to go right to compete in 2009. Luckily, hope springs eternal.

Well put.

Dude, what can I say other than count me in. It has been almost four agonizing seasons since my beloved Spos bolted for DC, four agonizing seasons of thinking I'd never give a damn about MLB again. Then, I started giving a damn earlier this season. The question then was, who to give the MOST damn about? You'll be happy to know that this blog pretty much my mind up for me. So... Let's Go Jays! Love live DJF!

If that's how it goes down next year, we will not be a top two AL East team. No management should ever be "happy with that."

I hope Halladay hasn't read this

You know whats BS? This post. You can do this with any quote for any other GM in any sport. Get over your hate

I prefer JP's bullshit to 'I can neither confirm nor deny ...'

yeah, Hatey Haterton. Get over your hate, you hateful hater.

Seriously, fucking box of salt or not, I don't like reading vaguaries about not bringing in any big-time FA. I'll be like Kramer at the end of the Kenny Rogers Chicken episode...."Manny......Manny....Manny...."

I believe the JPRBT3000 does come in several different models and variations available to any GM in the MLB. The JPRBT3000 is just one of the more entertaining models out there.

all I can say is get Gillick. JP and Cashman can start a consulting business....one that consults baseball teams on how to throw good money away. Let's go for a big time Flashback and bring back Gillick, a winning GM who put the Phils over the edge. I'm sick and tired of the GM who whines about scuffling. Speaking of which: JP just scuffled with his comments!

One last thing, blame JP for the Gulf war , Hurricane Gustav and the Russian/Georgian crap while we're at it. Before I forget, blame Adams, too.

Hey thanks for the heads up Dane. I was waiting for this. Parkes/Stoeten, you guys might wanna post this link prominently on the main page somewhere. We all need to stuff this ballot box and get Cheek and Howarth in the Hall. They made it pretty hard though with the lame form to fill out each time.

What was the year the Phillies won it all? And they can thank the Mets for last year.

Gillick is massively overrated at this point in his career.

No doubt he did well with the Jays in the 90s, but his Phils are really not looking too good if you take a careful eye to that organization.

What has Pat Gillick done for the Phillies? Did he draft Howard, Utley, Hamels? Did he trade for any of them? No.

SP said...

I was just gonna say the same thing about Gillick.

People should actually go through his personnel record before you slobber all over his nuts.

No doubt he has been a great GM, most in scouting, but with the Phillies not nearly the same. He was named Phillies GM on Nov 2. 2005. Look at this record.

Hey Spencer, the thing is that I'm a fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, and because of this, the blog that I write on is probably going to focus more on the Toronto Blue Jays GM than another team's GM.

I appreciate your constructive criticism though.

Are you guys bent on Ricciardi leaving town already? Or do you think he should get another shot next year?

Fuck off Parkes

Are you guys bent on Ricciardi leaving town already? Or do you think he should get another shot next year?

- has he earned the privilege to stay with his performance over the last 7 years?

- is it likely that you can get someone who will do a better job than JP for next year, given the current roster and the FA class for the coming season?

Give JP one more shot - it makes the most sense to cut bait after 2009 (or even halfway through the season) considering everything that is tied down until 2010. I'm sick of hearing everyone bitching at JP when they should be bitching at Bud Selig or whoever else because a top 10 team is never in the playoff race (and, yes, TO has definately been a top 10 ML team this yr).

Put us in any other fucking piece of shit cyclical division or blow it all up and copy the NFL (the only well-run major sports league) and have 12 playoff teams and not only will we make the playoffs some yr, but actually win the WS; considering revenues are related not only to playoff games, but more teams being in playoff races, MLB needs to get a clue and give the best teams a legitimate shot at making the playoffs and TO is one of these teams. Fire Bud Selig!

the jays mistake was trying to compete the sox/yanks way. both teams overpaid, made bad signings, but they can offord to absorb them. jays can't/couldn't.
it always seemed like ricciardi made big signings just to say 'look, we can do it, too!'
and then he tried to convince fans (drunken or otherwise) that he bought us a porsche. yeah, he did. a porsche 914 (porsche body/nametag, beetle engine)
