Burnett's Return: Fuck It, This Isn't Happening...

Alright, let's just give up the Burnett charade right now. No, I haven't taken much time to think this through, and I'm about to get the fuck out of here so I can go laugh at the Leafs (except for Grabovski, who I've got in my fantasy keeper pool-- because I'm a fantasy hockey wizard, FYI), but check out the latest story from Cathal Kelly in the Star...

"The Toronto Blue Jays may have to wait well into November before they can begin negotiating with A.J. Burnett," he begins. This is despite the fact that Ricciardi has said-- for whatever that's worth-- that he wanted to begin negotiations as quickly as possible. That, says AJ's agent, would be "an exercise in futility."

So here's what I'm seeing: Burnett, after getting ripped for flirting with Chicago, finished out the season by saying all the right things. Now, safe in his home, his camp is acting exactly the way we expected. They're not interested in the Jays' feeble offer-- and the Jays know that. Ricciardi, I would assume, wants to make it look like he's making a serious play for Burnett, and AJ's camp basically just told him to go fuck himself. And so what? Right? Burnett has only once had a year as healthy as he did this year. His price is going through the roof, considering the teams who'll be in on him (the Yankees reportedly want to sign at least two of either Sabbathia, Lowe or AJ), so, uh... considering what the Jays budget will be and the holes they need to fill... fuck him. Right>? Let's maybe stop talking about this. Or had we already?

I wonder what the change in the US economy will have on free agency this year?

You have to think teams will be forecasting a drop in attendance in 2009 and might be more conservative this off season.

Last month, I'd have said 4 years and $54 million wouldn't get it done....now you'd have to at least consider the idea that its a reasonable offer

Anonymous said...

Good point about the economy. I think the free agent market is in for a tumble. It's a truly fucked situation and it's nowhere near over.

On the downside for the Jays the dollar is falling like a rock as all the panic goes running to US Bonds.

I would much much rather have Lowe or even Sheets at the right price. AJ will get injured again, it's only a matter of time...

Also, is it just me or does Milton Bradley make a tremendous amount of sense? He made 5 mill last year I still think he is undervalued by alot of team and could come cheaper then Burrel, or Manny obviously.

Texas was the park this year that needs the largest park adjustment. Everybody looks like a better hitter in Texas. A lot of teams not wanting an angry black man is also quite under-rated also. Sheffield was fairly correct in his observations.

The Jays were obviously never really going to sign him anyway, not with the 2 draft picks they get out of him leaving.

It's probably for the best.

Someone is ripping Burnett for being injured all the time and then suggests we go pick up Milton Bradley? Seriously?

Uhm Milton was also great in PETCO park...so..

EB0 said...

AJ's Injuries are due to a mechanical problem...Id much rather deal with Milton.

Also do you think we will have enough money to get a good hitter if he doesn't have some problems.

Unless y'all still holding on to the Manny pipe dream...

I'm going to lose my voice booing this fucker next year. I mean really, all that heart felt bullshit about what an influence the Doc has been on him and how much he loved his time here. Fuck that, just hot air to stop Cito Gaston and Nick Leyva from personally kicking his ass. I hope he suffers a career ending injury.

MILTON BRADLEY SUCKS AT THE GAME OF LIFE! i miss heckling him with that line.. jays definitely need an angry black man though.. someone to slap some sense of urgency into rios/wells.

What's wrong with our economy?

Stedron said...

A couple of things. You can't play the injury card and advocate Ben Sheets. That's just dumb.

And...uh....yeah.....Go Leafs Go! That was a hell of an effort if nothing else. Obviously just making the playoffs would be a HUGE success this year, but either way, I think this team will be fun to watch. For the first time in like ever.

Heres my theory on JP's offseason plan:

Let AJ walk..tell ppl we offered him what we could.

Go out and see if Matt Clement wants to come to Toronto now..for the 4th yr in a row? While hes at it, he'll call up Mark Prior too (yay incentives!)

Shortstop..while he's on the whole flashback friday year long edition, he'll go out and sign Felipe Lopez (common guys..this one time he hit like 23 homeruns!)

Oh and maybe we'll top it all off with a Sergio Mitre signing...hell we did it with AJ right?

Stoeten said...

Stoeten, is it safe to assume that you'll issue an apology to the Leafs tomorrow? That was one hell of a game!

Will do. They looked like a very good AHL team, I must admit. For the first time in YEARS I could actually see myself getting behind the Leafs this year. Unreal that they're actually doing it (rebuilding) right for once.

where is parkes? stoeten is making me sick.

wait. and now stoeten will say something in defense of his sorry self.

No, I'm with you.

Fuckin good catch, keys to my jimmy. How fuckin cool is it that Burnett, our beloved Pete Puma, is wearing a fuckin Puma hat, which, by the way, is actually the same fuckin color as Pete Puma? Fuckin unreal! It's like I'm trippin or something. Fuckin shrooms.

But is this fuckin article saying anything new? The important quotes n shit are from his agent, not AJ. OF COURSE his agent wants, told, and decided for AJ to opt-out. I dont think this article says anything about whether AJ really meant all that shit he said about loving Doc, the team and all that dandy shit. The reported initial offer the Jays supposedly gave was fuckin crap anyways.

Either way, fuckin heeeellll no to Sheets and/or Bradley, unless they cost less than a bag of shit. Lowe wouldn't be too fuckin bad, but he's gonna get some large offers too considering there are more than a handful of teams interested in him -- and I wouldn't want the Jays to pay that fuckin much for him. Fuck Orlando Cabrera. And while I'm at it, fuck Manny -- just cuz it's obvious it wont happen.

Yes we should leave the Burnett thing alone because (as I suggested here before) he is going to say a bunch of shit about the Jays and Canada in the U.S. media that is going to drive us all nuts.

Let me be the first to say- "Fuck you A.J you piece of garbage."

He was fun to watch this year at times but overall, his stay in Toronto was a failure in my opinion.

Burnett is so fucking over rated this year. Ya, he was pretty good compared to other years, but thats because the other years he wasn't playing half the season. The only reason why everyone thinks hes worth alot is cuz he got a bunch of wins and alot of stike outs this year, but ure all stupid if u think either one of those stats are very important.

An overpriced, overweight, big bag of injury-filled shit. It'd rather have the 19 game winner who leads the league in K's.
And right, wins aren't important. Why would we want a pitcher who wins games? Lets go out and get Steve Trachsel back instead. He'll save us a buck. Fucking city full of idiots.

Maybe A.J. impregnanted that woman and will stay in Toronto because it's the Right Thing to Do.

EB0 said...

Some of these responses have been non nonsensical at best...

My point is that as a middle pay roll team we have to look for undervalued players. I would think after this year being injured again Ben Sheets would be valued lower by the rest of baseball A.J. coming of a 19 win year(meaningless...yeah)I guarantee will be overvalued by the rest of baseball. If we can't get Lowe, and were stuck between Sheets and AJ, I would much rather have Sheets. His injuries are not mechanically related as far as I can tell. If anything judging from the types of injuries it's most likely due to conditioning. I'd rather take chance on that than a mechanical problem which will be with pitcher until they are changed and judging from Marcum, A.J., McGowan and even little Tim Collins the Blue Jays aren't in the buisiness of doing that.

Now in regards to Milton dude home and away splits aren't that bad and he still and has always got on base like a mother fucker...if .400 obp cost 5-7 mill im down. Pat Burrel seems to be declining and isn't exactly iron man and at this point and probably more pricey. Forgive me if Im not sold on Raul fucking Ibanez. (ewwww)

On the economy issue, the question isn't what the impact will be...but if it causes enough teams to take a wait and see approach this off season. If that happens, the supply of free agents could exceed the demand and we could see a lot more Kyle Lohse-type deals this year.

What that means for Burnett? Who knows, but its certainly more risky to opt out now than it would have been had this not happened

Matt said...

There are many reasons not to want AJ back. Obviously, he is a huge injury risk and the market for him is going to be insane. If we can get him at the offer JP has made, fuck yeah, get it done. But we can't and everyone knows this.

His peripherals were the worst of any year he had as a Blue Jay. Everyone is always talking about all this upside AJ has, and he sure as shit has it, but mentally, he is fucking useless. He talks and talks and talks at the beginning of each year about how he is going to have another pitch or 2 coming out of ST. Of course, he throws it some, but once the season starts, he is back to his curve/heater combo. The reason this is such an obstacle for him is that everyone in the league knows his curve, which is among the best in the league, is practically unhittable. They also know that it ends up in the zone only about 1/3rd of the time. So sit on the fastball or wait him out and draw a walk. In the games where positive variance aren't on his side and his curveball is missing most of the time, the guy struggles.

Yes. We are desperate as fuck for pitching right now. Are we really so desperate to want AJ back at his insanely inflated price? There has been a pretty obvious decline in his peripheral numbers over the past couple of seasons. He also has terrible mechanics and by some stroke of luck managed not to get injured this year despite his timing problems and his Inverted L/borderline Inverted W. So now he's got a bunch more wear on his arm than he usually does coming out of the season. I'd rather see the Jays' hitters, who have to know how to succeed against him, play against him regularly when the Red Sox or Yanks pony up the years and dollars. Each of those games that he is dominant over the life of this deal will probably be offset by a game where he is shit, or a start he can't pitch because his arm is fucked. Again.

Matt the problem is do you want to pay Jon Garland 13 mill a year to come to Toronto instead? The Piggish teams like Boston and NYYs and Mets are gunnings for the big pitchers. That means Toronto has to overpay for a second tier guy. And Garland is not getting press BUT they need pitching or else Doc might ship out too.....

Matt said...

I think I might actually prefer to pay Jon Garland $13m a season to paying AJ $18m a season over 4-5 seasons. A guy like Garland can likely be had for a shorter term deal, most likely. He can be used as a stopgap while Marcum heals and while McGowan and Janssen find their form again. Also, Purcey needs to go through his growing pains and Cecil needs more time in the minors. The money really isn't even the worst thing about getting Burnett, it's the years. He has a very pronounced mechanical flaw in his delivery and WILL continue to deal with a lot of injuries to his shoulder and elbow due to this. I think anyone who gives Burnett the years he wants is asking for trouble. Especially since he has hit the stage of his career where most pitchers begin to lose velocity. Burnett has never shown the mental makeup of a pitcher, he is a thrower, though there is no arguing he has a change and a 2 seamer that he could use to become a pitcher. I just highly doubt that he will all of a sudden stop being hardheaded and learn to really pitch. So you're committing years and money to an injury prone player in the decline phase of his career. This does not seem like sound management to me.

I'd rather take on a reclamation project or find a cheaper veteran alternative who will do a shorter deal. Having another veteran voice on a team with a lot of young pitching seems optimal for their maturing process.

This team, specifically with all the injuries to their pitchers, are not likely to make the playoffs next year unless guys like Purcey, Snider and Lind have breakout years, Vernon stays healthy and produces like he has in the past, Rios bounces back, Hill bounces back and some of the recovering pitchers put in good seasons.

Why not just get a good clubhouse influence who is going to help us remain at least slightly competitive while our team gets its shit together and some of our younger players become ready to contribute for a full season?

Matt Stairs,

Reading your comments on MLB.com almost made me cry.

Anonymous said...

anon, he has pitched in the AL and he has a world series ring with the White Sox he's a decent pitcher ( Garland). What else do you want toronto to do, come in 5th and have Doc say fuck it and then the Jays go from a regular 3th place team to a 5th palce team. Wilner says they'll be good in 2010, who fucking cares. They need to put fannies in the seats now, not in 2010. JP's head is on the chopping block so he better sign a decent number two and somebody that can fucking hit.

It was cool to see Stairs come through last night. It got me thinking though, when are the Jays gonna make it to the promised land again? With AJ bolting and next year's rotation being Doc and the mysteries and shitty offense when the fuck is that possible? And Wilner saying that the pitching injuries are normal! The fucking young Ray starters are not injured and they are in the ACLS no doubt. There is something wrong with ARnsberg, the pitching philosophy of the Jays or something because the REd Sox and Rays have minimal damage compared to Toronto and these fucker are in the playoffs!

That being said Doc will ask for a trade if JP sits on his hands. Doc's comments about the Rays this summer showed a lot of frustration. This guy is busting his ass for what? To not contend? Good for Stairsy though.........
