Come Back To Me?

As my dear colleague Stoeten pointed out yesterday, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to believe anything that comes out of the mouth of J.P. Ricciardi other than the collective cocks of the Massachusetts media, and even then there could be an extreme bias attached.

However, if there is a scrap of truth to the Blue Jays interest in retaining the services of A.J. Burnett, it has now become abundantly clear that J.P. Ricciardi will have to journey into the depths of the underworld to bring him back to Toronto.

Following the New York Yankees lead, the Boston Red Sox have now revealed their interest in our very own Pete Puma. While the five years for $80 million rumour may be little more than the workings of Darek Braunecker's inner P.R. Ricciardi, the thought of the two highest payrolls in baseball attending Burnett's free agent auction doesn't exactly inspire a lot of confidence in his return.

So, let's completely embrace the idea of sour grapes and point out once again that between Burnett's history of stays on the Disabled List and the fact that he threw more pitches than any other pitcher in the Major Leagues last season, the Blue Jays could be much better off watching his ship sail away and potentially sink right off the coast. Bon voyage, Burnett.

Hear, hear. Well put.

Speaking of astronomical sums of money, Parkes, you still owe me $108.

I don't really care where A.J. ends up, but the Yankees and Red Sox can fight over him like bitches if they want to.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm looking forward to Halladay vs. Burnett, in Yankee Stadium, or Fenway Park.

I'm looking forward to Doc, and the Jays, kicking his ass. I want to face him. A lot.

I'm not pissed at him. I'd take more money too. Anyone who says they wouldn't is a lying mother fucker. But that doesn't mean I won't enjoy beating the piss out of him when he's in another uniform.

Agreed, let him go, I don't know if you've checked out MLBtraderumors.com this morning but Riccardi is now saying he's not going to be involved in any free agent this year.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/11/blue-jays-to-si.html

"Beyond attempting to re-sign starter A.J. Burnett, Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi does not intend to dabble in free agency this year. He told MLB.com's Jordan Bastian he'd probably stay in-house. Ricciardi shot down rumors of interest in Jason Giambi, Milton Bradley, and Rafael Furcal."

It's almost like management has pulled in the purse strings for 09 and JP is in full pout mode now.

AJ will be done by June and his contract will never be worth the $$$. He won't make it this season and likely will never recover.

I get a very sad sense the Jays season is over before it starts. Status quo with a few lost players will not make for a fun season.

Sorry guys, but JP has to go.

I wouldn't take more money just for the sake of getting more money.

I may be a mother fucker, but I aint no liar!

A Cocteau/Burnett reference? Still not sure if Parkes is a clever motherfucker or just a fag.

can't it be both?

Fuck off Parkes

brought to you by McDonald's, I'm loving it.

Do you think Cito set AJ up (and hopefully the wankee/fucksox)for disaster by repeatedly leaving him in to throw as many pitches as his noodle arm possibly could?

I hope so... at least it shows Cito's a forward thinker.. unlike the moron GM who says he never had a 5 year plan... come to think of it.. how the fuck does anyone get any sort of management position without being able to spout off short and long term goals? fucking jays. need to stop ruining my life. fuck.

here's a question: how much does AJ need to be "the guy"? In boston he would arguably be the 4th starter behind the trio of "5 inning" Dice-K, "straight brim" Lester and "i'm a colossal asshole" Beckett. In New York he might be #2 behind CC, and in Toronto he is #2 behind Cy-Roy, and close to being eclipsed by McGowan or Marcum or Litsch.

I wonder if he would instead pick a team where he would be the ace of the staff.

I really hope he doesn't go the Yankee scum.

I believe they're going to sign CC & Tex so AJ would only net a sandwich pick and the Yankees' 3rd round pick - am I right? If he goes to Sox we get their 1st rounder plus a sandwich pick?

While Burnett might not offer good value for the money he's going to be paid over the next 5 years, you still absolutely do not want to see him going to the Yankees or Red Sox.

These guys are our direct competition. Having AJ Burnett on them will without question make either of those teams better. This isn't like the the Blue Jays investing in a injury prone player and the budget clusterfuck that would happen if he hits the DL for a full season - these are the Sox and Yankees. They can eat the losses if AJ goes on the DL. Getting 20 - 25 AJ Burnett starts a year (at about a 110 ERA+) WILL make them better.

He's not going to "sink" them, you guys. Even if his arm falls off. Whatever they get out of him will make them better, regardless of price. Yes, he's overpaid - but he is still a good pitcher and having him on the Sox or Yankees for the next 4 - 5 years will make our lives more difficult.

You just don't want to see a budget consciousness team like the Jays offering him a 5yr/80mill contract.

Stoten, when you're posting as an anonymous you should wait longer than a minute to drop the punchline to your set up. It's too obvious that way.

hahaha. i totally would do something like that, but i actually didn't this time.

If we have no money for free agents I think it's time to sell off assets are retool for a run in 3 years when Snider, Cecil, Arencibia, Cooper will be coming into their own.

John Brattain said...

What I don't get is that they're willing to give now free agent A.J. Burnett $15 million a year for the next three maybe four years but if he rejects that, then those funds will not be used toward player acquisition?

Uh, yeah.

Well, I'm loath to pimp my own stuff (liar!) I did have a few thoughts on Ricciardi's comments and why they're really confusing. I can't see his next job being in marketing at any rate.

I'll be having an article on THT also dealing with it this week.

Bottom line (and the bottom line worries me to no end) is that J.P. is not acting like a man whose job security depends on the Jays' success next season.

Best Regards

John
