Griffin Live!
Richard Griffin is doing his live chat at the Star right this fucking minute. How the fuck did I miss the start of this? Give me a minute to try to catch up with the insanity train...
Q1: Richard Spackman Wants Peavy, Likes Griffin
Classic Griffbait with the introduction to this one. Has Griffin really gone away for the last while? I think it was just the mail bag, right? The Spackster is jonesing for something, whatever it is. Perhaps it's a fucking clue, as he's suggesting Accardo and Litsch for Jake Peavy would somehow make sense to San Diego. Not quite. And with the no-trade protection, the Peavy question is more moot than something that's really moot. Though I must admit, I wondered aloud a few weeks ago why more Jays fans weren't speculating on this-- perhaps the answer has something to do with the shutdown of Griff's mail bag.
Griff gets full marks for this one, and he even says that he believes the Jays could handle the contract-- none of that cutting payroll" nonsense here. Sorry, I'd like to complain. I really would.
Q2: Jon Empringham Makes My Brain Hurt
I suppose that in many ways I'm not like Griff. For example, if I saw a question that suggests the Jays should Mike Jacobs and shits on Lyle Overbay, I might not pay it any mind. Especially if it also asks why the Jays aren't pushing for Orlando "are you motherfucking kidding me" Cabrera as Eckstein redux. Griff is tiresomely shitting on Ricciardi's drafts again-- even though the other week he was saying that the Jays should have been trading away prospects. AndholyfuckingshithewantstobringfuckingShitskeback!!!! WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK.
Q3: Andrew Illsley Wants To Trade Halladay
How's this for a shocker: Griff has taken a question about whether it's time to rebuild, and turned it into a classic loaf in Ricciardi's face. Why bother trying to point out that the "boatload of prospects" theory was a little bit torched in the Johan Santana deal. This is not the simple exercise Jays fans think it is, and frankly, it's completely unnecessary. How quickly so many idiots have turned from ten-game-winning-streak excitement to completely giving up on this team. I'm not saying it's not going to be difficult, but I'm sorry, fuckfaces, the potential is there for the Jays to have a good season next year. You won't be welcome back on the bandwagon if you don't want to admit that-- though I'm sure you'll jump right back on anyway.
Q4: Dwayne Boddy Likes Oliver Perez
Griff says pretty much what I would say about Oliver Perez, so... yeah... moving on...
Q5: Matt Ventresca Unintentionally Gets Griff Prattling On About The Expos Again
Fun fact: Did you know that Griffin was once the Expos PR guy? You know, Ned Colletti was once a PR guy, and now he's one of the most godawful GM's in the league. Huh? Huh? Just sayin'.
Griff likes Matty Stairs. Fair point.
Q6: Rob Brander Brings the Griffbait from Down Under
Oh look, it's shit on Wilner time. He's one of the very few guys around who puts fans who are plainly wrong in their place and understands all those crazy newfangled ways of thinking about the game-- like with logic and stuff-- so we'd better be sure to take him down a peg. Ugh.
Oh, and let's shit on Ricciardi for not living in Toronto. Way to fucking whip up more pointless anti-JP sentiment on an issue that is just absolutely fucking nothing. He has a blackberry, he has a phone, why do you seriously fucking care where he lives? Surely there are better things to slag Ricciardi on than this straw man piece of shit.
Q7: Davy P's Griffbait Is Not Serious-- Let's Hope The Rest of His Question Wasn't Either
Russ Adams as DH? Holy shit, how does this question not automatically get thrown into the ignore pile? Oh, I know, because we get to shit on Ricciardi for drafting Adams-- and then we get to pretend that Ricciardi is hiding a useful player in the minors because he doesn't want people to be reminded of a colossal fuckup. Because... you know... it certainly couldn't be because Adams sucks shit, and this question is a waste of everybody's time. Definitely not that.
Q8: A. Porter Walked Right Into That One
Should the Jays play in the NL? "With the popgun offence J.P. has assembled and with our status as the Vaughan of North America, “the country above the U.S.” we are better suited for the International League." Wocka wocka wocka! (OK, fair point.)
Q9: Michael Kostoff is My Favourite So Far
Surprise surprise, Griff stands up for his brothers in teh BBRAA. It's probably true that teh guys in the BBRAA put more thought into their awards selection than the coaches and managers-- who are fuckawful, as a general rule-- but that doesn't answer our friend Michael's question, does it. Just because one group of award voters sucks less than another, doesn't mean that they didn't also fucking suck. Read Joe Posnanski destroy Tom Boswell on his jibberish about why Ryan Howard deserved the NL MVP. Oh, and Griff sez Cliff Lee had "a Cy Young year". Holy motherfucking shit am I in 1985?
Q10: Justin Booth and Griff Like Jon Garland
4.90 ERA and 1.51 WHIP? What 4.90 ERA and 1.51 WHIP?
Q11: Joe Badali TL,DR
It's called player rights, Joe. Long fought, hard won, rights. It's a good thing.
Q12: Dave Y. Likes Retro Uniforms, Improvement
Griff's recipe for improvement is now to "sign good veterans on their last legs to one-year deals while their injuries heal and their own prospects develop."
Was it not just last fucking week that he said they should be bundling prospects for MLB talent?!!???!?????
Q13: Richard Armstron Asks An AJ Injury Question
I don't really care about this. AJ is not coming back. Next. . .
Q14: Gary Fisher is Concerned About RISP
Griff really does like Orlando Cabrera. Ugh. And apparently there is something about the Jays uniform that makes players struggle to hit with RISP. Fuck off. Oh, and let's shit on Ricciardi for trying to get fans to come out to the ballpark by insisting that the Jays are contenders when they're not, as though he's doing that because he's nothing but a lying dick, and that it's not... I don't know... his job.
Q15: Alex Martin Asks About Shitballers
Griff would take a flyer on Kenny Rogers??? 5.70 ERA and 1.63 WHIP? What 5.70 ERA and 1.63 WHIP? He'd pass on Brad Penny, but would take Pedro-- because Pedro had initial success in Canada, and our magical ground is obviously a factor. Paul Byrd I can agree with.
Q16: John Valvano Asks About Milton Bradley
Griff doesn't outright dismiss the topic of being a clubhouse cancer, because Griff believes in that nonsense, I guess. JP, he says, would have been fired in October if anyone in Rogers management had the stomach for a GM search. Riiiiight...
Q17: Pat Connors Wants To Blow It Up
Griff figures the Jays owe it to Halladay to trade him if they start rebuilding. Ugh. No, they owe it to their shareholders to make money, and if you want to really get warm and fuzzy about it, to their fans to do what's best for the team. I fucking love the Doc, but don't be ridiculous. I also don't think that Rios is untradeable, as Griff suggests. Wells... yeah.
Q18: Tim Amor Wants the O-Dog Back
... and Griff pretends that it's JP's long memory and not the fact that it makes no fucking sense that's keeping this from happening. He also wants Lind at first base and Overbay gone, because apparently he paid as close attention to the last couple months of the season as I did. Gaawd. It's depressing that someone legitimizes this bullshit.
Q19: Tony Del Rio Wonders About David Purcey Being Good.
I'm with Griffin on the big no.
Q20: Sandy Webster Asks Another Question About Trading Halladay
Griffin at least tempers some of his comments on trading Halladay. Whatever.
Q21: Marcus Heinrichs Gets Griff To Say Something Stupid
JP will be forgotten in five years, and Griff believes in the power of Cito and the Beest to maybe get the Jays into meaningful September games. Jesus.
Q22: Nate Cloet Asks An Almost-Reasonable Question, Gets A Reasonable Answer
Doing nothing isn't a good idea. Moving on. . .
Q23: Michael P-something Wonders About Ben Sheets
Turns out Ricciardi is a dick and that question doesn't require further discussion, according to Griff. Depends on the deal, Mike. Depends on the deal. JP likes the discount bin, and though Sheets will probably still command too much, if he's healthy he's fucking great, and JP might think that's a reasonable gamble.
Q24: Sam Urban Asks About Hill At Second
Griff likes the idea, and I'm certainly curious. I'm pretty sure Hill keeps saying he doesn't want to move, but if it's the best option for the team, might have to be a move they make.
Q25: Scott Cochrane Wants to Move the Beej
Griff thinks this is a good idea, and then throws out Aaron Heilman of the Mets. 5.21 ERA and 1.59 WHIP? What 5.21 ERA and 1.59 WHIP?
Q26: Mark Donaldson Asks About Prospects
Ricky Romero is "a roll of the dice only because of draft position" apparently. A case of beer says he's better than Purcey.
Q27: TC is Afraid Of Losing Johnny Mac
Griffin, instead of answering Parkes's excellent question about how he can possibly shit on Ricciardi for wanting to get better players at the expense of lesser "plans", shits on Ricciardi for have a commitment "like a pulled hamstring, day-to-day." UGH!
Q28: John B is Sick Of Mediocrity
Rogers' front office doesn't have any baseball men who'd know who to hire to replace their baseball man, so they're letting JP run their team into the ground. Because it would have been impossibly difficult for Rogers to hire someone to aid in the search, I guess.
And mercifully, it's over. . .

His insanity pure and unspoiled, like a sunrise.
I read about half of it and had to close it down. Fucking awful...and was that a hit a wilner too? Fuck that guy. Griffin that is.
Griffin is completely fucking bonkers now + always.
Holy shit.
Oh. My. God. His Milton Bradley joke. There aren't words...
Griff has definitely slowed down...
after burning himself out with long answers originally, now he's taking 'yes' or 'no' questions that he can answer with 'jp hates you'.
i guess this Dick ran out of steam after about 15 minutes. apparently the same way it did at the Winter Meetings in 1980
I enjoyed watching the madness and misinformation pile up in Griff's retard-a-thon, but that question he took just so he could make his pathetic short-Sheets pun and take a swipe at the front office? Awful.
Fuck that shit, man.
Hey! Someone posted my questions in the comments section.
Like a pulled hamstring, day to day.
Too much to compute. Must shut down.
My head exploded.
My favorite part might have been how Griff explained that, unlike Wilner, he is thoughtful, concise, and civil. After all, he has 4 kids who look up to him.
Let's just ignore the "I've been shitting on Ricciardi (and Wilner)for the past "X" years and make no bone(r)s about it" aspect.... then sure. I guess.
i think the griffs too tired from typing with his thumbs
Why in the fuck can no one spell "Halladay"?
Why do the Toths and Griffins shit on Wilner when he goes out of his way to avoid shitting on them despite how easy it is?
Unreal! The whole entire thing is mind numbingly stupid.
Fuck off Parkes
Nice pic, by the way, real improvement - NOT!
I feel insulted as a fan after suffering through that live chat. Seriously.
I feel insulted that someone resorted to using NOT to insult me.
Is Dwight Schrute after Parkes?
Is Griffin making an attempt at not-so-sly sexual innuendo with that "hump day" comment?
If so, gross.
"Richard, I have a tough time dealing with a month without your column. I don’t know what to do on Wed? Is this normal?" and "Love reading your columns and the mail bag."
Who are these people, and what the fuck is wrong with them???
I just read the whole thing. And I'm never going to get those 12 minutes back. Fuck.
You gotta applaud the guy for managing to work in a shot at JP, direct or veiled, in every one of his answers.
Q21: Marcus Heinrichs Gets Griff To Say Something Stupid
JP will be forgotten in five years, and Griff believes in the power of Cito and the Beest to maybe get the Jays into meaningful September games. Jesus.
At least Griff is somewhat right there. JP has never had a team play a meaningful game in Sept, please don't include this year fuckers - that was a sham and bullshit, Beest and CIto could at least say they have done that in this city.
so ...griff answerer..none of parkes' questions?
that's just avoidance...cowardice? Just wants to have people that do not challenge his opinions (where he would have to use valid arguments with... LOGIC!)
Check this one out, from October
29th...
Q: Richard, I remember reading in Sports Illustrated a few weeks ago that Theo Epstein's new contract called for an average salary of around $2M/yr. Am I wrong in thinking that GMs in particular and front office staff in general are underpaid to woefully underpaid? I mean, nobody in an organization has a larger impact on the direction of a team than the GM and at best they’re making John MacDonald type of coin. Shouldn't the new “moneyball” be poaching the best baseball minds and paying a premium if necessary?
Greg Wells, Toronto
A: I wouldn’t say that major-league GMs are woefully underpaid. The players have a particular talent or skill that is unique to the top 1,000 performers in their field, with a very short peak-skill period. Meanwhile, the career of a GM can go on a very long time. Just look at the age difference in this World Series between Andrew Friedman of the Rays and Pat Gillick of the Phillies.
Besides, the competition for the position of major-league baseball general manager is huge. There are 30 men in those positions but thousands of others that feel they could do the job if given a chance – and they may be right. I know that if given the chance and surrounding myself with the brightest baseball minds I know (and actually listening to them), that I could pass as a major-league GM. But I can’t hit a curveball.
WHAT A STOOGE. I NEED ANOTHER SCOTCH
a major league GM no less...
You guys are waaaaaay too obsessed with Richard Griffin.
Holliday, possibly Furcal, Giambi and/or Nick Johnson...it's still early, but one could make the argument that Beane is currently eating JP's lunch in the trade and free agent market. And he's somehow doing it with a significantly smaller payroll. How good would those players look in a Jays uni next year?
You can also be sure that there is no way Beane would re-sign Burnett to a 4- or 5-year deal at $16-18M per. Btw, is AJ's new contract going to include another opt-out clause?
I fucking hate Griff more now than I did before today... which is fucking surprising, because I thought the amount of hate I had towards him previously was at a maximum fucking level. That fucker!

Closer to 80 than 90, I'd say. That lineup blows. And where the fuck is the Beej?
I hate to be a pedantic prick, but for credibility purposes, you might want to spell the players' names correctly. Snyder? Carleson? Hello?!?!?! And ditch the all-caps.
Lastly: Ibanez isn't coming to Toronto. If he is, JP is a dumbass, because 37-year-old Raul will cost the team a first-round draft pick.
And as for the memo-from-JP conceit (To: Dumbass DJF Blog Poster. From: JP Ricciardi, VP Baseball Operations + GM, Toronto Blue Jays. Re: 2009 Roster Construction). Well, um...oh, forget it.
not sure about 90 wins, but it does look OK
Parkes,
Wilner has class and conducts himself with professionalism. That's why.
wilner's logical fallacies are more dangerous than griff's, because they're surrounded by thorough analysis
he's also got his own interests to consider
wilner was at the brass rail tonight
"wilner's logical fallacies are more dangerous than griff's, because they're surrounded by thorough analysis
he's also got his own interests to consider"
I agree with this. Wilner's opinions also buttressed by his supremely assured tone (laced with a hint of contempt).
For me, Wilner lost most of his credibility last season when for months - in the face of all evidence - he refused to acknowledge that something interesting was going on with the Rays. And during the season, when I suggested that Pedroia (along with Longoria) was the kind of player you can build a team around, he disagreed, saying that among Red Sox players only Ortiz was that good. I wonder if Pedroia's MVP status (and Francona's effusive praise) has done anything to change his mind. Nah, probably not.
Wilner really blew it on the Rays, but to say he didn't acknowledge that anything interesting was going on is just plain wrong. He just kept saying that he was certain they'd fade-- which yes, turned out to be wrong, but was not wholly unreasonable. They were relying so heavily on a lot of guys who had never been that good for so long-- it seemed bound to fuck up.
And Pedroia is a very good player, but a guy you "can build a team around". I don't know how you define a guy you can build a team around, but I would say unequivocally that by my definition, Pedroia is not one of those guys-- not even close. You'd have yourself a pretty shitty team if he was "The Guy". The MVP and Francona's praise means shit. Wilner would be absolutely right to keep on standing by that one.
I'm not going to argue that Wilner is the greatest mind baseball has ever seen. Or that he's never wrong. Because that wasn't the point of my comment - at all. All I said was that Wilner conducts himself with professionalism in refusing to disparage a colleague who attacks him over and over again in an amateurish, unprofessional, and illogical way.
The typical BBWAA voter is probably more Richard Griffin than Mike Wilner. I think we would all agree that Richard Griffin is a moron. So your argument loses its credibility when you knock Griffin for his ignorance and then hold a player in high regard because he was voted MVP by 28 Richard Griffins.
Consider: Chase Utley plays the same position as Pedroia for a winning team (killing both those silly counter-arguments), put up FAR better overall stats and finished 14th in NL voting.
14th!
This means only one of two things: 1) AL voters are smarter than NL voters or 2) BBWAA are idiots.
I'm voting with the latter.
Was Wilner wrong about the Rays in the end? Of course. They made the playoffs and he railed for weeks on end about how they wouldn't. But his reasons for thinking the way he did were well thought-out and detailed - and he addressed criticisms of his argument by engaging and encouraging discussion.
Moreover, the Rays weren't that amazing a team. They benefited tremendously from the luck that comes with having the league's best win-loss record in one-run games. They had a run differential that was considerably worse than the 4th place Jays.
Mike, were you addressing Parkes with this at some point? Because I don't think Parkes disagrees about Wilner being class.
Perhaps I'm confused. This is what confused me: Parkes,
Wilner has class and conducts himself with professionalism. That's why.
Parkes had asked: Why do the Toths and Griffins shit on Wilner when he goes out of his way to avoid shitting on them despite how easy it is?
Q21: Marcus Heinrichs Gets Griff To Say Something Stupid
JP will be forgotten in five years, and Griff believes in the power of Cito and the Beest to maybe get the Jays into meaningful September games. Jesus.
At least Griff is somewhat right there. JP has never had a team play a meaningful game in Sept, please don't include this year fuckers - that was a sham and bullshit, Beest and CIto could at least say they have done that in this city.
How does the past have anything to do with this? So Cito and Beeston have done it before and JP hasn't-- so that means, if they do it, it's more Cito and Beeston? How do you figure?
No, definitely not counting this year.
We are in total agreement.
I should have just reworded that to say because the Toths and the Griffins have far less class and professionalism than Wilner.
anyone with eyes could see that TB is an excellent team
wilner is a fool
That is a completely fucking stupid statement, dude. It's hard to argue now, but it's was not AT ALL a stretch to be unconvinced by an offense carried by a rookie, that was running Gross and Hinske and Floyd out there way too much. Plus Bartlett is a black hole at the plate, and look at what their four most-used bullpen arms had done in 2007 in terms of ERA+:
Wheeler - 84
Howell - 60
Balfour - 59
Hamel - 74
Ugly! Plus, Navarro, Sonnanstine and Jackson had never done anything before this year.
I'm sorry, but a fucking fool is someone who was wholly sold on this team before some time in August. And there were a LOT of them.
Stoeten,
What you and wilner consider to be an average team on paper, doesn't translate into what you want in real life
Do you find it romantic that wilner wouldn't let go of his argument even to the end of the alcs, even after Manny left Bwaaahstyn
wilner is a fool
and you are a fag
