Ted Rogers 1933 - 2008

Toronto Blue Jays owner Ted Rogers passed away today at his home due to heart failure.

We'll lay off the petty jokes and minor complaints for a little while out of respect for Mr. Rogers' family and friends, to whom our condolences are sent during this tough time.

What this means for the Blue Jays remains to be seen. Allan Horn, a former Scottish footballer, will remain as the acting chairman until a successor is decided. According to the National Post, "the two main contenders for the top job are Nadir Mohamed, president and chief operating officer of Rogers' communications unit, and Mr. Rogers' son, Edward, who runs the company's cable business."

If enthusiasm wanes for owning a ball club at Rogers HQ, I know a certain pension fund that has a bit more cash on hand lately...
Seriously though, with Godfrey going, Uncle gone, and tightening of the reins with respect to budget and personnel in the front office - this offseason surely is turning out to be quite a big'un in terms of the future direction *off* the park...

Nice to see DJF beat bluejays.com to the news. It's crickets over there.

Crickets are relaxing. I like crickets, but not when they're on me. Know what I mean?

People that high up in business have no soul. As soon as we stop remembering Ted, he no longer exists.

I know we said we'd lay off the petty jokes, but I thought I'd bring one over from a comment on a cbc article I just read where someone commented that Ted Rogers "just ran out of minutes".

*cough* har har *cough*

Has anyone checked out the venom-spewing maniacs in thestar.com comments section? How insane is it that there's that many weirdos running around out there?

The economic downturn is getting worse

Good time to cash in your chips, Teddy

I assume they've had a successor ready for some time now.

If you're compiling a list then it's probably worth checking out The Star. It is, after all, "The Voice of the GTA".

Nothing quite as extreme as Deadspin from what I can see though. I guess I'm just used to all the Star comments coming from people who may seem a bit dim but usually pleasent enough.

I hate that I'm agreeing with Buzz Fucking Bissinger, but Deadspin really is a cesspool of mean and snarky assholes. And I'm pretty sure Deadspin filters their comments to keep only the mean and snarky ones. I wish a blog other than Deadspin was chosen to speak for the blogosphere in that debate hosted by Costas.

That's really sad because Ted Rogers did a great job looking over the Jays and allowing them to develop not only in skill but in popularity and "bigness".

You think Deadspin is a cesspool? Have you used the internet before?
