Evidently Ty Wigginton is aiming for a contract bigger than Casey Blake's three-year $17.5M job. So... I'm guessing that's going to put the Jays out of the running.
If they do end up doing anything in that regard, I imagine it's not likely to be until the market comes down a bit. Plus, if they keep waiting, they can cross their fingers for the scenario that DRays Bay suggests: "If one of the available DHs pushed for a short deal in order to test a hopefully resurgent market within a year or two, that just works into their hands even more." Mmm hmm.
Now, perhaps I'm being a little too hung up on Wigger here, but I am kind of crossing my fingers that he doesn't sign somewhere before winding up in exactly that scenario. I just like the versatility he'd bring, I guess. But at the price, given the Jays' current situation... yeah, fuck it.
In other news, Rocco Baldelli has found out that the illness he suffers is less serious, and more easily treatable than previously believed. I'm not sure what I think of the idea, but taking a flier on an oft-injured guy who hasn't been good for a few years-- and happens to also be an Italian Masshole? I wonder if that sounds like a recipe someone in the Jays' F.O. might like. . .
Incidentally, I was recently told that Italians are genetically predisposed to like Bruce Springsteen. Can this possibly be true? Because playing the "race" card like that seemed to me like a cheap way to get off the losing side of a The Clash Are Better Than Springsteen argument.
The always-excellent Mop Up Duty checks in with some (much needed?) realism, wondering how on earth it's come to pass that people actually believe Ricky Romero is a viable rotation option for the Jays. "If Jays fans or the front office expect anything below a 4.50 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP in 2009 I frankly think they’re kidding themselves," they say. "If he was a 6th round pick instead of 6th overall I doubt he’d even be mentioned for a roster spot."
And here's a well put-together reminder that Alan Ashby-- or, if you prefer, Buns-- was a first-hand witness to the Jays' inaugural season, a club with a roster that "might lead one to believe that the team’s executives decided to field a team of players that just happened to fall to them, like a collection of damaged drifters who all end up in the same run-down coastal outpost, drinking tequila shots at tables for one and nervously keeping an eye on the door."
Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch keeps pushing the idea of the Cardinals trading for BJ Ryan, but openly wonders whether the Cards have anything the Jays would want. Um... salary relief? Also: note to JP: Find something.
While we're making pointless notes to people we don't know, hey Jim Balsillie, could you maybe buy the Jays already. Please, please don't let it fall into the hands of those shitfucks at MLSE. I'm begging you. PCVS Pride, brother. Help your fellow alumni out.
Hey, the Cubs' single-A team, the Peoria Chiefs, have hired another former Gibbers lieutenant, Marty Pevey, as their manager.

Good call on Balsille. He would likely do what I thought Rogers was going to do- i.e. be a Steinbrenner/ Cuban type.
Can't wait for you guys to post a response on Griffin's latest steaming pile 'o' shit: http://www.thestar.com/sports/article/555090
That settles it, the man clearly suffers from some sort of delusional complex. We should start a penny fund to send him back to Vegas. The warm dry air seems to clear the head. Or maybe even a dim-witted walrus gets a one week shot at clarity. Who knows. Enjoy choking on that one.
I read an interview a few weeks back with one Larry Tanenbaum. He recently upped his stake in MLSE and made it clear he wants the Jays in the MLSE fold.
God forbid.
Baldelli is from Rhode Island, isn't he? I'm Italian and maybe it is in the genes to like Bruce (he's half Italian I think, which if it's on your mom's side means you're Italian) cause I do, but I still side with the Clash, and it's not close.
Griffin and Bob Elliott have to be Springsteen guys, while Blair and Cathal Kelly I bet would go with the Clash. Wilner could go either way I think. Jamie Campbell is the Monkees all the way though.
Not that fellas who run a site replete with Nickelback ads can afford to be music snobs....
wilner would like glass tiger
who wouldn't like glass tiger?
Somebody in the Jays ticketing dept sent my old man a $160 BJ Ryan home jersey in the mail today, gratis, with a Xmas card. We usually split a 6-10 game flex pack, but haven't bought anything for 2009...
Has anyone else encountered this?
that's it, ryan must be about to be traded. Why else would they give away stuff like that!
Ryan to the Cards for....
Rick Ankiel - who was already mentioned as having been offered for Putz.
Sure he'll be gone in a year but in 2009 we get a better bargain on a bat than any on the FA market, a nice upgrade to the outfield defense, and the opportunity to keep Snider in AAA or deal Overbay as events warrant.
Makes perfectly good sense for the Jays
On, and on Springsteen?
Blah.
Bob Seger is FAR better than Springsteen.

Why do you think that Rogers Communications would be selling an asset that provides decent cross-marketing abilities when it doesnt need the cash? To someone whose net worth is probably tied (though I dont know this as fact) to a stock that's lost 2/3rds of its value and, in doing so, has handily underperformed the major indices.
Huey Lewis is far better than Bruce Springsteen.
Tom Petty > all (except Glass Tiger).
@Will: trading BJ would free up (some of?) the money we'd need to sign Bradley, but if we trade BJ for Ankiel then we've filled the slot Bradley would have taken, and Bradley's a better hitter. (Unless we also move Overbay somehow, and I doubt we'll find a taker this year.) Of course if Bradley signs somewhere then Ankiel's as good as any of the remaining realistic options.
furcal went back to the dodgers? wtf? did he just pull a barajas?
I read this at baltimoresun.com
It makes me feel much better about my Jays.
"So whats the deal w/ the O's pitching situation. Do we expect Albers to throw 200 next year? What about these Japanese FA's we were looking at? I heard Boston offered one 7 mill/yr. I guess that scared us off.
I guess we will be at Ollie's again to find bargain basement crap to supplement our rotation. Do people not realize that this team stinks...we won what 63 games last year & nothing is being done. Some say, we are rebuilding. But the act of rebuilding requires activity. Trading contracts, signing young players.....we are sitting on our hands. The embarassment continues. Angelos is the worst GM in history. And yes,,,he is a GM"
You really have to laugh at people that say we will be 5th place next year.
Baldelli actually hit pretty well last year in his limited AB. He'd be an awesome platoon partner for Lind/Snider if the price is right.
And seeing as there's Halladay-Litsch-Purcey and at least half of McGowan, it's not likely Romero gets many starts, especially when you consider he's facing competition in Cecil-Janssen-Richmond-Downs-Tallet-Ray-Mills. I'd be very surprised if he made more than 10 starts, and I think the Jays would be thrilled with a 5.00era and 1.50whip from him in those starts. He's 23, pitched well in the AFL last winter and had a nice 7 starts in his first exposure to AAA. There's no reason to get worked up about him.
Hugo - you missed out JP = Tragically (un)Hip !
MLSE would be a hell of a lot better owner than Rogers. They have the capital to make serious moves at any time.
And Rogers doesn't?!?!?!?!?

Not sure, but that's what people have been saying...
Stoeten - seriously?....
Wilner is a Beatles guy.
the ontario teachers pension plan is one of the richest groups in the world and they own mlse, they control FAR more money than rogers.
MLSE is a sports company, their primary focus is the sports, not cross promotion of their cell phone business.
Huh?
Fuck off Parkes
