Wait a Second, They're Saying What About McGowan???

From Bastian's article yesterday:

"Toronto has backed off its original projection of possibly having McGowan back by May."

"Early in the spring, we said don't look at May," Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston said. "It might be longer than that. We just kind of put him on the back burner and hope that he can come back, whether it's June or July or even next year. We just hope that he can get that shoulder back together and be able to pitch again. Right now, I can't tell you when."

Juh? Well, fuck me. Carroll was right.

"Before, it was a straight sharp pain and I couldn't do anything," McGowan said. "After a while, pitching hurt so bad. This is just more of kind of a weak feeling, because I hadn't done anything in so long. I kind of felt like I tried to push myself a little too hard throwing already, so I needed to back off just a hair.

"I want to get back to playing, but I've got to be smart. I've got to do it the right way so I can avoid injury again and not go through this again."

This sounds really bad: "We just hope that he can get that shoulder back together and be able to pitch again."

Looks like that labrum/rotator cuff was worse than they made it out. His career may be over, especially if this setback was the result of him pushing it, which he seemed to be doing in the offseason (remember those news local stories from his hometown in December?)

All I can say is, we're lucky to have Cecil and Mills.

I dont think many people realize how serious shoulder problems are. Even if he is healthy for next year, if he has had shoulder problems they are going to come back in the future. Hopefully the Jays can get a few good years from him yet, but McGowan will probably wont stick around that long. I can't think of any players who have had a shoulder surgury when they were young, to go on and pitch till they were in their late 30's. If anyone knows of some please fill me in, cause I don't think it happens to often if at all.

Stoeten said...

Fuck, I might as well have not even mentioned this, if this is the reaction.

Yeah, it's a possibility that he's got a serious, career-threatening, never-be-the-same-again problem. But come on, we have absolutely no idea.

Again, lets not go nuts.

Leading baseball surgeon Dr. James Andrews estimates that 85 percent of pitchers make a full recovery after an ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, aka the once risky Tommy John surgery. (USA Today has even called the surgery the "pitcher's best friend.") But if pitchers with torn labrums were horses, they'd be destroyed. Of the 36 major-league hurlers diagnosed with labrum tears in the last five years, only midlevel reliever Rocky Biddle has returned to his previous level. Think about that when your favorite pitcher comes down with labrum trouble: He has a 3 percent chance of becoming Rocky Biddle. More likely, he'll turn into Mike Harkey, Robert Person, or Jim Parque, pitchers who lost stamina and velocity — and a major-league career — when their labrums began to fray. ...

Casey Janssen's labrum was torn (or at least frayed) and he has already started his comeback. I believe that Gil Meche also recovered from a full blown labrum surgery. Let's all stop pretending like we have a clue what the fuck we're talking about and leave it to the experts.

Andy Mc said...

Gaston said this:"We just hope that he can get that shoulder back together and be able to pitch again."

That is what worries me. Just the mention of "again." That and the fact that labrum surgery is a career ender.

I am the eternal Jays optimist, but I refuse to hold onto hope for McGowan when his own manager questions his ability to pitch "again".

PS: Casey Janssen hasn't proven shyt yet.

astain: Self explanatory, I think.

I wouldn't really put too much into Cito's medical prognosis.

However, shoulder injuries are always serious buidness, so all we can do is hope for the best.

For all of the hype of League and McGowan, Litsch has done more than both of them put together. Wells has been the model of inconsistent seasons, and who knows about Rios? Thank you, Ash for drafting Halladay with your first ever pick. That is the only saving grace of your career.

Meche had surgury on his rotator cuff, not labrum.

Found a nice article on Labrum tears, its 4 years old so im sure some progress has been made since then. But still is a good read if your interested.

A year ago McGowan was our future #2, now we'll be lucky if he gets back into the rotation. Baseball can be a shitty sport to be a fan of sometimes, I hope the same happens to Joba.

Anonymous said...

I thought he had a torn rotator cuff and frayed labrum. Janssen had a torn labrum, but only a minor "11-1" tear.

Is it just me, or does it feel like we are getting a lot of smoke blown up our asses about all the great prospects coming up.

I can't remember so many prospects producing as many boners as we have seen this spring.

Blake, that's because the Jays system has sucked ass for the better part of the past decade. Having an average-ish number of exciting guys down on the farm is like Christmas morning for most of us.

I have multi-directional shoulder instability, likely due to a labral lesion. I saw a surgeon. He couldn't fix it. The labrum is one tricky motherfucker. Here's hoping McGowan recovers fully... but I know exactly what he's talking about with the feeling of weakness. It may not be fixable. It's tough.

(And of course I get to thinking I should maybe go back and see the doctor again, I look him up, and... he died five weeks after seeing me last. Fucked.)

My DJF comment from a couple of days ago (in response to Arnsberg's comment that McGowan's setback was a minor one):

"cue the hysterical idiots who are positive this means his season is over."

I wouldn't go that far, but I'm also skeptical of the "minor, minor"-ness of the setback cited by Arnsberg. Having shoulder surgery (even if it was supposedly a frayed, not torn, labrum) is a big deal. Did you see the video of the procedure posted on the Mockingbird?

Feeling enough pain in spring training that you want to see a specialist--after rehabbing for the better part of a year--is not a good sign. That's not hysteria; it's common sense.

relax -- the hitting will be improved this year, just check the splits since we got Cito back. He's talking to the hitters. Also, Denbo is gone which can only mean one thing for the hitting. Plus, Aaron Hill will be back for a whole year and that dude has proven that he can get on base. Overbay is a full year removed from injury, Rolen has a new swing. We know what we have in Lind and Snider. Wells can't possibly get injured again this season, and the Jays are rock solid through the middle of the diamond.

"reomen" -- another word for misplaced hope

"We know what we have" in Lind and Snider," Mike? We don't know if we're going to get .210/5/30 or .330/30/110 or somewhere in between. These are two kids less than a year removed from the minors. Plus, in Snider's case, it's less than half a year removed from the low minors.

I'm predicting 75 wins. I just barfed on my labrum.

Unrelated topic, but why the fuck does the London Free Press exist with articles like the one below? Either hire an editor or fire your sports writers. Their comparison of Snider and Lind to Delgado and Green is a bit of premature to say the least. I guess Londoners stopped paying attention to the Jays in the late nineties...

press (not kidding) - what London, Ontario clearly lacks.

Is there any possibility that the Jays might look at Pedro Martinez as an option? I mean, it would follow the grand Blue Jay tradition of signing future Hall of Famers past their prime (Frank Thomas, Dave Winfield, Paul Molitor), and if McGowan is out for the season, well, Pedro has acquitted himself nicely in the WBC so far. What's 5-6 million among friends, anyway?
