April 19, 2009 Game Threat: Jays (9-4) vs. A's (5-6): Let the magic continue

I don't know what it is, but I feel good. Could be the bliss of a peaceful Sunday morning. The fact that Spring is here. The fact that I'm not totally hungover. Or just maybe it has something to do with Overbay's dinger in extra innings to improve our record to 9-4 (2 games ahead of Baltimore, baby!) and a chance to win a fourth consecutive series to start for the first time since 2001.

Could be that. But normally this happiness would be marred by a lingering worry that we're deluding ourselves and being overconfident. But that's not there anymore. Ricky Romero starts this game after a nails last outing. They'll be looking for him to go deep into the game after yesterday's bullpen fiesta. And I'm not worried one bit. Whatever it is, let it continue. Tits!

Woo!

Rick-Ro is gonna kill it again today and we are well on our way to the top!

Now all we need is The Cito letting Snider hit some LHP and then this just couldn't get any better.

Go Jays!

Harold said...

Lind is sitting? And they just slide Millar into his spot in the order? I'd rather see Millar and Chavez as 8th and 9th - and have Rolen, Overbay, Snider as 5,6,7.

Oh well. Why argue with a manager who is off to a 9-4 start.

Pennant!

Tony said...

Who're the two bald dudes in the upper right of the dogpile, there?

Anonymous said...

At least Snider is starting. Give Lind a rest after straight games to start the season and he can always pinch-hit later if needed. Hopefully some early runs and let Romero settle in for the day.

julie said...

@Tony..Jesse Carlson and Wells

Jeff said...

Just a thought: Should we all maybe attend a game together? Sort of a meet-and-greet type thing?

It could be dangerous, though, because the amount of baseball knowledge/Blue Jays knowledge assembled in one section at one game could cause a pretty big scene... Any thoughts?

Ps. PLAYOFFS!

Anonymous said...

snider finally starts vs. a LHP

confidoboyd said...

snider finally starts vs. a LHP

That can't be right, the way I understand it from folks around here Cito is trying to ruin Snider's career and will never play him against a LHP. Must be a typo.

confidoboyd said...

Wish the defense would stop screwing over the starters.

Dan The Man said...

Come on FUCKING RIOS...you can't drop the fucking baseball, it's like he's afraid of it or something..

There's something terribly wrong with Rios mentally..and maybe he has a drinking problem or something...

Dan W said...

Fuckin eh. I am ready to go. Been drunk all weekend but going to try to relax and sober up/cure a hangover with the Jays. Should be a nice afternoon, I'm excited to see Romero again, missed his last start.

Pete said...

I think its hilarious McDonald hasn't started a single game yet.

Anonymous said...

Bout fucking time Rios.

Anonymous said...

Would you start McDonald over Scutaro?

Anonymous said...

phil collins needs to re-record susudio and make it scu scu scutaro

Anonymous said...

AARON HILL!!

Anonymous said...

That was Scutaro not Hill. They had the shift on.

Pete said...

No I meant I like that they haven't started McDonald. The guy wouldn't be here if Inglett could play short, although I heard he started at short a couple times already for Las Vegas.

Stedron said...

You Overbay haters can seriously fuck off.

Anonymous said...

Chavez is perfect to play the role of the mercenary

Dan The Man said...

I guess it helps alot that Oakland's offense is 2nd worst in the AL

Dan The Man said...

That's what happens when you hit a cutoff man, WELLS!

confidoboyd said...

Wow, that was a Butterfield-level of stupidity in sending the runner.

Anonymous said...

This guy Chavez is sure built like a catcher.

SP said...

Fucking awesome throw Aaron. Makes up for his shitty throw to home against Minny.

Ian H. said...

Now that's how you gun somebody down at the plate!

Anonymous said...

mike gallego is butterfieldesque but what the fuck was ellis doing stopping at second? brutal baserunning

abigail breslin said...

Romero is throwing too many pitches

confidoboyd said...

Well if Oakland wants to give us the game...

Alex said...

I always call miss when its obvious they are going to be out; however, just now against Scutaro he actually missed :P

confidoboyd said...

"Rios doesn't get the job done"

JC might as well record that and loop it.

Stedron said...

How good would Rios for Lincecum look right now...

SP said...

Thanks a lot 3-4 hitters

Stedron said...

OH RICKY YOU'RE SO FINE!!!!

I would like to have sex with Romero.

Anonymous said...

He was good in bed as you would imagine

SP said...

Ricky Romero has 2 BBs in 18 IP now.

Anonymous said...

Chavez,

No offence there buddy, but what's up with the whole rapist batting stance ?

confidoboyd said...

Hopefully Romero can have a couple efficient innings now.

Anonymous said...

Fucking awesome throw Aaron. Makes up for his shitty throw to home against Minny.Huh? Hill's throw was the only weakish link in the play. Wells hit the cut-off man perfectly, Hill didn't have to move, and the relay was up the line.

Carson said...

Is it completely fucking awesome that Im thinking Rick Rom for ROY?

Dan The Man said...

I think Travis Snider is a little bit ahead..

SP said...

Dude, theres no way Vernon's throw makes it to home plate. Hill was practically in shallow RF.

Stedron said...

So, what's a slightly more boner-riffic than reasonable expectation for Romero this year? 16 Wins, 3.80 - 3.90 ERA?

Harold said...

A's Rick-Rolled thru 5 innings.
His ERA has officially dipped below 2.00

confidoboyd said...

Well so much for the efficiency wish, hopefully he can get through 6 and the bullpen doesn't let him down.

Anonymous said...

Romero would be going longer if he didnt have to pitch 10 extra pitches becuase of Rios and Hill missing the ball

Thom said...

Rios was blinded on that play. Jerry caught that...I don't think JC did.

New JC call for Giambi: "The Big Giambino"...uhg

confidoboyd said...

Rios - completely.
Hill - Not his fault, clearly took a bad skip on the turf.

Anonymous said...

I hate JC and Rance, but to their credit, they did pick up on the fact that Rios lost the ball in the lights.

Thom said...

fair enough, was listening to Jerry

Anonymous said...

Ricky is never gonna give us up, let us down, never gonna run around and desert us

Anonymous said...

Anyone else notice Romero skips over the third base line? Superstitious fool. But it works!

Anonymous said...

I get that the bullpen needs rest, but is it wise to let Ricky throw this many pitches?

Anonymous said...

Fuckin eh, beauty DP. Scoots even got the ball out of his glove cleanly in the exchange.

Anonymous said...

Romero is keeping pace with Halladay on innings so far this year.

105 - 110 isn't that bad. He's 24 already.

there is no way he pitches only 175 innings if stays in the big leagues all year

btc said...

even though downs pitched 2.1 yesterday, didn't he only throw about 20 pitches? so surely there'd be no trouble pitching again today

confidoboyd said...

SP - They've implied the money will be there if they stay in contention.

Anonymous said...

Good lord, I'm getting boners for 2 out base hits in the 7th... talk about a pitchers duel.

The Manute Bol Experience said...

I think if they distribute innings amongst the young guys it'll be fine. I personally do not want to be subjected to Livan Hernandez for even one inning. He's horrible.

SP said...

Reposting...fixed the 847923 typos...

I think the Jays are gonna have to start looking around for an innings eater. You never know when injuries could come up and even though we have pitching depth in the minors, they're young (Mills, Cecil) or recovering from injuries (Janssen).

How nice would an innings eater like Livan Hernandez look right now? Rogers didn't even have a $1 million available to sign him? Cheap bastards.

Dan W said...

Fuck. So much for Snider starting against lefties, after today Cito will probably lock him to the bench and throw away the key.

SP said...

Hernandez is indeed bad but the guy just keeps pitching and pitching and pitching. He's had 30+ starts ever year since 1998.

Anonymous said...

anyone know how many innings Rick Ro this last year? He might be heading for Dustin Mcgowen territory.

SP said...

Romero threw 162 IP in AA and AAA last year. He'll probably be limited to around 150 this year.

Anonymous said...

What are the odds Uncle Beej blows the save?

abigail breslin said...

BJ with a 1 run lead....

SP said...

Uncle Brandon's Wild Ride in the 9th?

Stedron said...

Everybody can hit a bunch of homers in the new Yankee Stadium......except the Yankees......against Carl Pavano.

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!

confidoboyd said...

Romero won't regress, they've said they'll let him get up to 175 innings.

Alex said...

I think its going to be up to BJ ^^ That guy gives me a heart attack lol.

Anonymous said...

Fuck. So much for Snider starting against lefties, after today Cito will probably lock him to the bench and throw away the key.Cito's all about the long picture, giving people a chance to develop confidence in their abilities by using them correctly. He leaves vindictive responses to a bad outing, whining and bitching about the lineup etc to the blogging 'experts'.

Dan W said...

Jesus christ, Im just trying to have a nice little afternoon watching ball. I dont need or want a Wild Ride.

The Manute Bol Experience said...

Once the Jays inevitably fall into third or fourth, I guess it will make sense to shut some of the kids down. Then we might see the Wade Miller's and Brian Bullington's of the world.

btc said...

6 add on runs would be nice to avoid ryan related heart trouble

Dan W said...

6 would be ideal, but Ill take one..

Alex said...

Lock Snider away for one game? If he were that impulsive Rios would of been fired 3 games ago :P

Anonymous said...

Buckle up boys and girls.

SP said...

Strap up everyone, it's gonna be a wild ride

Well here we go. Hold on to your butts.

SP said...

I also love that the Overbay bobblehead proudly bears... the number 17.

Oops. Just a season too late there, boys.

Anonymous said...

just commenting on the "innings eater" discussion above.

while he's by no means a proven horse as of late, pedro's still available. sure, he seems to be asking a lot (5 mil), but he's jobless and has upside.

also, come mid season, ben sheets may be ready to roll. if the jays are still in the mix, and the young guys are injured/regressing/etc, he's an interesting name to throw around. probably won't cost as much as aj last year, and would likely be looking for a short contract like pedro...

thoughts/plausibility?

Jeff said...

A healthy Sheets on this Jays team can be construed as nothing but a good thing... but only if the Jays are still kicking giant piles of ass come July.

Anonymous said...

I'd be totally ok with Sheets or Pedro. And there's a good chance that at least one will be available when/if needed.

woozlewazzle said...

Sorry, I know Rios is sucking major penis these days, and don't mind if fans boo just a bit to let the player know they gotta pick up the pace (which is still bullshit--of course Rios is doing all he can to start hitting, and if he's not then there's issues).

But fuck guys, we're kicking some major ass, so for all you callers or negative commentators, chill out. We're in first place, stop finding things to be negative about. We're probably not going to be here come August so just enjoy the moment and chill out.

confidoboyd said...

Keep in mind that we would hardly be the only team interested in a healthy Sheets. If we're in a position where it would make sense to go after him then there's a good chance we'd be bidding against the Sox and Yanks not to mention teams outside of the AL East.

woozle - i don't know where you're hanging out but the majority of comments around here are actually quite positive and joyous; far more than they've been at even the best of times in recent years. People aren't "looking" for reasons to be negative, when something bad is going on its discussed because you can only say so much about the good stuff. Whining about people being negative is just as annoying as the negativity itself.

lol I think that's the most laid-back I've ever seen Cito.

And I know Cito has made some quesitonable managerial decisions to this point, but great call starting Halladay on Tuesday and bumping Richmond to Thursday...if they're really going to make a run at this thing then Doc has to start as many games as possible, regardless of off days.

Anonymous said...

This Romero kid looks pretty fucking sharp. I like how he keeps his shit together and has a bag of tricks to get out of jams. He's looked way better than I thought he'd be.

So far he's a stud.

Anonymous said...

Romero is just the kind of surprise that this team needs to stay competitive. I'm just hoping that another one of the pitchers can step up so we have at least three pitchers we can depend on in the rotation. Maybe Litsch when he gets back? Maybe Purcey if he can stop walking to much?

Anonymous said...

calling it right now - the Rays really ARE falling apart, it's not just a slow start.

Anonymous said...

And I know Cito has made some quesitonable managerial decisions to this pointHuh? Questionable by who that knows what they're talking about? Questionable like starting Bautista who has an OPS vs. lefties of .870 when lefties start? Geez, that's a real head scratcher, isn't it. Real questionable move that one. I suspect that a lot of the keyboard whiners aren't really baseball fans at all. Rather, they're guys who are simply trying to pretend they 'know' things they don't, based on a couple of posts they read on battersbox.

I'm starting to forgive Overbay for last season. It will be a long process, but our relationship has already come a long way. Also, the Rays will be fine. They will do just as good this year as the "Powerhouse" Rockies did last year. Also, I feel bad for CW Wang - someone didn't get the memo, it was supposed to be AJ. However, if CW Wang can't recover, and with AJ due for a DL stint any day now - the Yanks will be sunk!

Anonymous said...

Well, the team made it through the first difficult stretch (two weeks without a day off) with only Litsch out and Barrett hurt. I hope Cito judiciously uses off days for the players because it's a long time until the next day off again. 25 games in 26 days is sure a grind. 41 games in 43 days is pretty irresponsible by the schedule makers. I'm just saying be prepared for more injuries coming up.

JB said...

These game threads make for great reading when you are trying to kill time in the most boring classes ever.

SP - Hill's relay was not good at all. It's funny how when the Jays make a play they are supposed to make people get boners. His throw was up the 3rd base line and actually pretty poor for a situation where he had time to turn, set, and fire a strike.

Kanuck - Aside from the fact that we're Jews and the bobbleheads are free, here's the reason. Sure, the Sabbath means increased Observant Jew attendance on Sunday, but that's not the reason for this week. Passover just ended which means tons of family living in the USA were in town for the holidays, and school has been off for 2 weeks.

KJK - Starting Halladay on Tuesday is hardly a "great call". It would be moronic to do anything differently.

btc - While Downs did only throw 20 pitches on Saturday, in that scenario it's not the pitch count you look at, but rather how long his arm was "warm" for. Those 20 pitches were scattered over 3 innings, so from the time Downs got loose until that 20th pitch was likely over 30 minutes. I'm sure Cito would have preferred to not have to use him, but with a 1-0 game his hands were tied. No worries though because of today's day off.
