Game Threat - April 14, 2009: Twinks vs. Jays

. . . and you thought the Rogers Centre was a cavernous homage to everything against nature.

Let's begin today's blogcast by welcoming Brian Tallet to the Blue Jays starting rotation. According to MLBastian's twitterings, the jerky-making (that kind too) swingman will start Saturday afternoon's game against the Oakland A's at one o'clock in the fucking PM.

So, I guess Bill Murphy will now log more innings in the coming week than a couple of the starters.

I've got nothing in the way of stats that makes me say "yay" or "nay" for the swingman, and maybe there's something to be said for the way rotations and bullpens are way too specialized nowadays, but aside from all that, wasn't there a guy in Spring Training that almost made the rotation over Scott Richmond?

And isn't there another young starter on the farm who is expected to make a few starts this season, and isn't he scheduled to make his start on Saturday, anyway?

Anywho, the Jays are gearing up for a battle of the young lefties once again tonight, as Brad Arnsbergstein's Ricky Romero (1-0, 3.00 ERA, 1.50 WHIP) takes on changeup specialist Glen Perkins (0-1, 1.12 ERA, 0.88 WHIP).

We'll wait with baited breath to see if Cito is willing to take a chance on keeping Travis "Lunch Box" Snider's left-handed home run swing in the lineup against a starting southpaw for the first time this season.

Lineups:

Toronto Blue Jays

Scutaro - ss
Hill - 2b
Rios - rf
Wells - cf
Lind - dh
Rolen - 3b
Millar - 1b
Barajas - c
Bautista - lf

Minnesota Twins

Span - rf
Casilla - 2b
Morneau - 1b
Cuddyer - dh
Crede - 3b
Young - lf
Redmond - c
Punto - ss
Gomez - cf

I guess Snider should've done more.

I heard Bud Selig called up JP and told them they need to take it easy on the opposing pitchers for a while. Total domination isn't good for attendance.

On the topic of the Metrodome, WTF is with the garbage bag outfield walls?

No, it's like after you eat a bunch of worms and crayfish.

That's the equivalent of expensive woodwork in Minneapolis.

Paul H said...

At least their turf looks half decent!

the expos said...

According to the pre-game show, Litsch is fine. He will return once the 15 days are up.

DT said...

I think it's pretty lame that they're closing the Metrodome. It's even more lame that they're moving to an outdoor stadium without a roof. Did they forget to tell the architect that they live in fucking Minnesota? If they ever make it to the World Series in that new park, it's gonna be completely absurd.

Stoeten said...

It's also "Bill" Murphy.

Captain Guyliner said...

Yeah about the SkyDome, what's with our turf looking like a bunch of old welcome mats stitched together?

Jawn said...

Hopefully Snider will get in at about the second inning when they knock that Perkins goof out of the game. There's no reason why Batista should be in there against righties.

Stoeten said...

According to the pre-game show, Litsch is fine. He will return once the 15 days are up.

Did they say that? I heard strain, no structural damage, but nothing about when he'd be back-- just that they're shutting him down. Maybe I wasn't paying attention.

the expos said...

@ Stoeten:

Well it is an arm injury so don't hold my head to a cross if he comes back in 20. :)

Mike said...

I hope Jesse is okay and that the strain was being ignored during his 2 starts so that we have a solid explanation for his issues early on. Hopefully he will be okay after some rest.

DT said...

From Bastian's blog: "He will be shut down for the next two weeks before resuming on a throwing program."

Dustin Parkes said...

Budget cuts at Rogers? They're actually the fake putting greens from the offices of former executives.

I've seen Perkins pitch before, only because I have him in a keeper pool. I think he might be very, very good.

the expos said...

Really DT? Maybe my ears are failing me... or hopefully Bastian is a pessimimist. I'm hoping the latter.

Mike said...

1 month says JC

Mike said...

And I just opened me a Carlsberg! Let the game begin!

DT said...

Yeah - http://mlbastian.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/04/game_9_toronto_at_minnesota_pr.html - wouldn't surprise me if someone from the Jays said "he'll be back throwing in 15 days" - could be interpreted more than one way.

DT said...

They can't possibly be planning to run Tallet out there as a regular starter for a month, can they?

FREE BRYAN BULLINGTON

Mike said...

Hey Parkes, whats your take on Romero so far? Do you see him as a career 4/5 or do you think he can manage to be the #2 or #3 we want

Anonymous said...

If Romero's going to be pointing that smug face around for few couple years, he better be a good player

Dustin Parkes said...

I have no fucking clue. If you asked me a year ago, I would've said he'll be lucky to make the team ever. But if Arnsberg has really reworked him, and he's got his control together . . . well, yeah, back of the rotation in the Jays rotation, isn't too bad.

Dustin Parkes said...

I read somewhere that Saturday won't be Tallet's last start. I don't know how I feel about that either. Is there anything out there on swingmen? It just seems like a bad idea to me, but it could be because I like the idea of specialty players . . . seems more reasonable.

Pedro won't take a non-guaranteed contract or-- despite what I said this morning about how AWFUL he was last year, and how his WBC numbers mean shit, given that they were against Panama or Nederlands-- I'd take a flyer. Just for shits and giggles.

JB said...

Way to bench Travis Snider after his big game. I bet you Cito has no idea that Snider's minor league splits were almost exactly the same against lefties and righties.

I feel more comfortable with Mencherson than Bautista.

The Manute Bol Experience said...

Rolen is hitting better than anyone on the team. All of his hits seem to be just smashed up the middle.

FYI: you can also sync the sportsnet feed with jerry and alan if you a)have a pvr, and b)subscribe to mlb.com audio. The delay of the mlb.com audio feed is actually longer than the delay for sportsnet feed, so all you need to do is fire up the audio on your laptop, pause your tv for a couple seconds and, presto, no jamie/pat/rance bullshit. sounds like a lot of work, but it's obviously well worth it for the superior commentary. i also don't know where you can buy those radios with the built in delays.

They came into the game hitting .300 and .333 respectively.

JB said...

conidoboyd -- I think the point was that they are both righties that don't see enough pitches to be batting back to back.

jeremy said...

I don't know how anyone can think having rios and wells back to back in a lineup is a good idea.

They came into the game hitting .300 and .333 respectively.

Which is great but we know how often those two are easy out throughout the course of the year. Wells more so than rios.

JB said...

Bautista showing us all why Cito is a genius.

Snider hit lefties just as well in the minor leagues as righties.

confidoboyd said...

Which is great but we know how often those two are easy out throughout the course of the year. Wells more so than rios.

They have nearly identical career AVG and OBP.

What exactly would you prefer?

CheapSeats said...

Move over Vernon Wells.. Bautista is making a run for the most overpaid Blue Jay.

David said...

I'm going crazy looking for a stream feed... fuck MLB.

confidoboyd said...

conidoboyd -- I think the point was that they are both righties that don't see enough pitches to be batting back to back.

I think you're injecting more into his post than was actually there. Which would be a good argument if we had a LH bat that fit well between them.

jeremy said...

Imagine if we still had zauner in the lineup. Rolen, Overbay, Zaun. three guys in a row who could all very realistically put up 360+ OBPs in front of travis snider.

jeremy said...

I think you're injecting more into his post than was actually there. Which would be a good argument if we had a LH bat that fit well between them.

Nope, that is almost exactly what i meant.

Blake said...

aww shucks!

JB said...

bitey said...

I don't think Jamie's 'Aw shucks' was very sincere!

confidoboyd said...

Nope, that is almost exactly what i meant.

My apologies then, it came across as simplistic bitching in its form.

Back on point, do you want Overbay thrown between them? Or do you want one of them bumped out of the top half?

jeremy said...

I actually would probably root for AJ if he didn't go to the yankees.

JB said...

Ha ha -- shut out is over for Burnett and the Rays are still threatening.

JB said...

I miss Overbay. That's got to be two.

jeremy said...

I would give Lind a shot between them and put overbay behind wells. I know lind hasn't proven shit yet but he hasn't fucked it up yet either. Also lind can hit lefties somewhat. He's by no means perfect but i think the best option until he proves otherwise.

David said...

Let's see some offense! Put Snidey in!

confidoboyd said...

jeremy - so Rolen's down to 7?

Joanna said...

I knew as soon as Jamie mentioned it, the AJ no-no was doomed

JB said...

My ideal lineup:
Hill
Overbay
Rios
Lind
Wells
Snider
Rolen
Scutaro
Barajas

I would flip Snider and Lind as the season progressed. Of course I am not a guru on the Cito psychology. He batted Olerud in the 6th hole when he was hitting .400 and batted Devon White in the leadoff with a .317 OBP.

Anonymous said...

Rios and Wells are depressing. Looks like they spent too much time hiding from crazy 'ol Gibbs

jeremy said...

well actually i would bat hill first and rolen second. Again, by no means perfect but there is nothing even close to a good lead of hitter on this team. I'd like rolen to just focus on getting on base and not worry about home runs.

The Manute Bol Experience said...

But Devon White was really fast! You have to lead him off!

wheeler said...

I swear Olerud hit 5th

confidoboyd said...

JB - in '92 Olerud hit .284

The Manute Bol Experience said...

Get used to them. They're not going anywhere soon.

Jawn said...

John MacDonald looked like he wanted to kill himself when they showed him there.

JB said...

He had a .375 OBP in '93 and a .473 in '92. He should have hit third. His slugging? .450 and .599

I remember Cito in an interview saying that he leave him 5th or 6th because of that pressure bullshit and the fact that he was successful there.

Now we are watching our young guy on the bench while Bautista sucks ass.

wheeler said...

someone tell that fucktard Jamie it's Bautista not Bowtista.

Fuck!

Kanuck said...

MLB.TV is eventually supposed to let you overlay the radio broadcasters over the video.

Unfortunately it's now over a week into the season, and the feature is still "being worked on."

At least the high definition video is getting better. It was stutter-proof the last few days, though tonight is infuriating — I just saw Barajas's double now.

wheeler said...

I'm just raging because the Jays are losing

jeremy said...

There have been a number of moves that were bad franchise decisions. resigning wells was one of them. NOT because wells is awful. Because signing someone long term to, for the jays, franchise type money for their atheleticism and home runs but not OBP is bound to fail unless they stay very healthy. That's a bad bet. I'd rather take the prospects you could have sold wells for.

Ari said...

Actually wheeler, you're the fucktard, because it's Bowtista. He specifically told the media that. Leave the JC criticism for the many times he deserves it.

I kind of like the idea of having a lefty that completely baffles the league in his first go because nobody has ever seen him. Which is not at all to say that Romero has the stuff of a shitbagger-- quite the opposite. But it's just nice to put someone else on the other end of that, while it still plagues the shit out of the Jays.

The Twins sending Nathan out? Mistake not to. Will still be tough to pull through here...

Jays2010 said...

Wells' deficiencies (such as his questionable CF defence) were not issues when he signed the contract; I don't like the contract, but when guys like Soriano/Carlos Lee get the kinds of contracts they did with their defence, the Wells contract wasn't completely out of line - but, yes, get rid of him if possible.

Dan W said...

I think there's a difference between arguing that Wells' contract wasn't market value and saying Wells' contract wasn't condusive to building a winning team. I think it's safe to say the deal was in line with what his perceived value was, but I don't think paying him that kind of money helps your team win when you're only able to spend between 80-100M every year.

I agree with Stoeten; I believe that Wells' contract was almost considered regardless of the payroll (i.e. Rogers was willing to spend $90 million on the team other than Wells). That would have meant a $100 mill payroll this year and $110 mill going forward.
