Game Threat: Jays (6-3) @ Twins (4-5)

Scott Richmond gets his second start of the year for the Jays, after starting the ridicurously long Cleveland Indian home opener, included an insufferable 3+ hour rain delay. He faces the Twins' young right-hander Scott Baker, who will be making his first start after beginning the year on the disabled list.

Now, in fantasy baseball, you're always wary of using a pitcher who's making his first start back after an injury, and let's hope Baker shows some rust, because last year he was 11-4 in 28 starts with a 3.45 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP.

Hill has made some nice plays this year, but he's also botched some key grounders. His missed DP ball last night arguably cost the Jays the game, and tonight's (admittedly a tough play, but one he normally makes) indirectly led to the two runs allowed by Richmond.

Just because JP has had a lot of success with the prospects doesn't mean that every single one of them is ready for MLB the moment they step on the field. We don't want to be like Yankee$ fans do we?

I'm agreeing with Cito taking things in a slow structured way with Snider. There's no doubt the guy is going to be a slugger, but this way gives him time to work out any angst and learn how to be mature. This will help him in the long run during his career. And it shows that he's not expected to carry the team yet, so the other players know they should be doing what they're supposed to

Hill = absolutely nails!

C'mon Rios, time for more home runs.

Anonymous said...

Well, it’s Wednesday night’s game and I am PUMPED. Both Overbay and Snider are starting vs. a righty and it turns out the two of them are a sure run between them when they hit. If they each get 4 PA’s, that’s 4 runs right there!!! We’ve got a huge advantage.

Plus, it doesn’t matter if our second baseman boots doubleplay balls all night long, because it’s pinchhitting platoon advantages that win or lose games.

Can’t wait to see the rock’nroll from Lyle and Travis. And it’s cool that Aaron doesn’t make plays ’cause it really doesn’t matter nearly as much as who has a one ab pinch hit.

Lastly, I hope JP hires back Carlos Tosca as a bench coach to help Cito manage the bullpen. I’ve been a big booster of Carlson, but it was obvious in retrospect that Carlson should have been taken out at Crede. Tosca would have made 3 or 4 pitching changes that inning, and his record of success doing that can’t be ignored.

Mike Wilner's comment on not caring the least about whether Bautista ever feels confident vs. a righty because he should be on the bench when they’re in the game, was right on the Moneyball. After all, other teams may need to think about a thirdbaseman who’s going to miss a good portion of the season, but not the Jays. As every JPfanboy knows, Scott Rolen’s a lock for 162 games a year, and there’s no way Bautista’s should have to face righties ever!

WTF?!?
Lyle and Travis were up in the second and third respectively, and Lyle grounded out to the right side, a sure outlier there, that never happens, and Travis struck out!? That must mean that given the odds, we’re due for two runs from those two next time.

We allI know that Travis never would have struck out last night though. I mean, if Cito thinks that a mug like Jesse Crain could ever strike out a rookie like Travis, it just shows how he’s never read your blog or even DJF. In fact, he probably doesn’t even read blogs because he’s so ‘old school’.

And the only reason he's now struck out twice tonight is because last night he didn't get to face Jesse Crain, he of the .705 OPS vs. lefties. That's what made him strike out tonight.

You can't pay for stupidity like JB's posts.

Anonymous said...

Campbell sure was fucking excited by that Cuddyer catch. Ginger cunt fuck.

The fact that Wilner predicts the Jays will miss the playoffs this year suggests that things are going swimmingly. (See last year's 4+ months of predictions on Miked Up that the Rays were perpetually on the verge of collapse.)

Don't get me wrong--I think Wilner does a great job, but his playoff predictions are a bit wonky.

Both the Yankees and Red Sox will have some aging issues as well. I just wish we had this offence last year when we had the best pitching in baseball. It has got to all sync sometime!

JB, do you even know adam dunn?

I should clarify that -- my idea of a complete hitter is someone who takes a lot of walks and hits with power (see Adam Dunn and Gene Tenace).

I could care less if they K all the time. Dunn may K a lot, but he still makes fewer outs than 95% of other players.

Anonymous said...

wow, just looked up tenace's numbers, he walked like a mofo. .241 avg, .388 obp career

Blake said...

@ chris from windsor

I don't want to see Rolen traded anymore then the next guy but... is this not exactly what the jays wanted to see from him early ie, proving he is a) healthy b) productive in order to drive up his trade value (or make him actually tradeable)

Great start from the Jays, but they have a long way to go to be a playoff team, and freeing up some salary while you can may not be a bad idea, and now you may be able to get something back in terms of baseball talent that could make the 2010, 2011 teams that much better. I don't see any potential trades for him right now - but having Rolen off to such a great start is really, really good news for the jays.

Blake said...

6 1/3 IP 1ER from Richmond?? Awesome.

I am not a Toronto sports fan. Just pointing out the obvious . . . that in a down year in 2008 when the Yankees tanked, the Jays took advantage of that opportunity, while having the best pitching in baseball, by releasing the cleanup hitter (Thomas) during a season in which 30-homer Glaus had been traded for 10-homer Rolen and nothing was done in the course of the season to replace that offence . . . Bay went to Boston, Dunn went to Arizona and J.P. landed Mench and Wilkerson. Opportunity missed. That was J.P.'s window to be a winner.

And for the record, I am a drunk Jays fan at the moment

That is a good point, although Thomas sucked in Oakland too, and in order to get Bay the Sox gave up Manny.
