Breaking: Jays Snag Dellucci

Holy fucking shit sticks covered in broken glass and swallowed whole!

According to MLBTR, quoting a Buster Olney report, the Jays have an agreement with David "I Love" Dellucci. The Double D will report to Las Vegas and then join the Jays at the earliest opportunity, aka whenever the Jays decide to try to send down Joe "The Cat Came Back" Inglett.

Or could they be planning another roster move in the meantime that might make Dellucci's transition to Toronto smoother? This is a bit of a Plan B, and if I want to be very cynical I could take the signing to mean that Travis Snider's back is way more fucked than originally thought and it's doubtful he'll be back with the big club the rest of the year.

Speaking of cruel theories: let's check back in a month's time and I'd wager that Dellucci will have a better OPS against right handers than Vernon Wells.

One thing of note that the monkey army might find interesting is that The Double D is known for his batting off the field as well. According to that impenetrable source called Wikipedia, while with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Dellucci was cuckolding Gena Lee Nolin's husband on a regular basis.

You may remember Gena Lee Nolin from my masturbation fantasies circa 1997.

Update: Interesting spin on the Snider angle of this signing from Jeff Blair. Snappy the Turtle suggests that Snider wasn't on good terms with Cito Gaston when he was demoted, and that could be the impetus for Dellucci's coming to Toronto.

Speaking of which, that would make an awesome short film if they did the story of Delluci's arrival like it was Eddie Murphy in Coming To America. QUEENS!

You really make it sound like there are rumors Dellucci is a switch hitter and was nailing Nolin's husband. I had to check Wiki if he was playing pitcher or catcher.

Meh on this signing. I like it better than Inglett, but this screams Wilkermench.

.278/.341/.361 - Even in Delluci's powerless, short stint with the Indians this year his line vs. RHP was more valuable than Vernon's seasonal numbers (and yes, I realize VDub isn't hitting lefties this year, which is weird).

I'm very hyped bout this deal when looking at the big picture! JP has done well

Stoeten said...

As long as they don't fall in love with him, he's an improvement over Millar at DH against RHP. It's not Mencherson until they give him 300 plate appearances after it's clear he sucks shit.

TSG said...

BTW, I'm fucking stoked that Marisnick is now following me on Twitter.

Brad Fullmer Fan said...

Yeah, if he sucks, JP, please release him.

Yet another Toronto GM blatantly favoring Italian players and coaches. First Colangelo with Gherardini and Bargnani, then Triano and Iavaroni, and now Ricciardi with Cito Corleone and capo Delluci. Hopefully we can trade for Giada De Laurentiis next.

Voodoo Matt said...

I'd rather see them try to get last year's numbers out of Joe Inglett. After last year's left field calvalcade of crap (Stewmencherson), I'd rather not have to worry about a new retread this year. I'll try to remain positive.

I'm confused. Was Cito upset that Snider was sent down or was Snider sent down because Cito didn't like him? And they're signing Dellucci as an excuse not to call Snider back up, again.

Ari said...

"If he favovoures italians why did he part with frank the cat?"

Because Kevin Ahrens is 1/4th and Justin Jackson 1/8th Italian

Jeff said...

they totally should've gotten frank instead when they had the chance! JP probably just fell in love with double d's 29HR year back in '05...

greenfrog said...

Dellucci's last two full seasons (at age 33 and 34):

230/296/382
238/307/405

Colour me unexcited. The 35-year-old Delucci is a lot closer to Mencherson than he is to being a bona fide DH. I have no problem with the signing if it means the Jays are simply adding depth in anticipation of acquiring a better hitter later this summer. If, on the other hand, JP plans to rotate Dellucci, Millar, Bautista and Inglett through the DH slot for the rest of '09, it's going to be a long season.

Hollow Head said...

I see Dellucci having a incredible comeback season and becoming a fan favorite in toronto untill his 40's!

Stoeten said...

I wouldn't call 56 games, 119 PA a full season.

Dellucci's last two full seasons (at age 32 and 34) against RHP:

.251 / .319 / .426
.299 / .375 / .529

There was something there in 2006. But that was 2006. Still, meh. But I don't get the Mencherson thing. Mencherson was a good idea-- they just should have never, ever, EVER kept running those shitbags out there after it was clear what they were.

Ari said...

The bottom line is that even at his worst he's better than Inglett, and we don't need Joe's positional versatility with JMac and Bautista also on the bench. That being said I of course agree that Dellucci better not stop the Jays from recalling Snider or acquiring a bat if the time/price is appropriate.

Brandon E.M. Savage said...

If it keeps Millar from hitting against RHP it's a good move, but I'd have liked to have seen a call up of Coats or Phillips over this signing... Even though both of them are really benefiting from the 51s hitter friendly park.

Anonymous said...

So when does ed rogers take control the jays?

SP said...

Stoeten, everyone keeps saying that, but what would you have done? They brought up Lind and he started off hot but fizzled out at the end. They got Bautista and he was just meh too. Inglett delivered some quality league-average ABs. But what were the other options? I think last year was simply a clusterfuck all around on the batting side and nothing short of a major trade for a Dunn would've helped.

Even the late John Brattain who was vocal about his hate for JP couldn't offer a solution when he wrote about this situation last year. He wrote an entire article on it and his only solution was Adam Lind: http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/let-their-be-blood-on-the-streets/

Finding league-average hitters is exactly what JP did by signing Mench and Wilkerson but it didn't work out. It's simply not as easy to find league-average hitters as you'd like to think, especially in-season.

greenfrog said...

I wouldn't call 56 games, 119 PA a full season.

Dellucci's last two full seasons (at age 32 and 34) against RHP:

.251 / .319 / .426
.299 / .375 / .529

. . .

The problem with this analysis is that (a) his age-33 season counts, despite the fact that he played only 56 games, because it means he's a year older (now 35, when most players are in significant decline), and (b) under Cito, he'll start against RHPs, but will inevitably log ABs against lefties (almost certainly more often than during the seasons you mention), so the stats you cite are probably inflated. Finally, like both Mench and Wilkerson, he just got released from his former club...

Brad Fullmer Fan said...

Signing Barry Bonds would have helped, but I suppose going against the league's wishes in that area isn't exactly like going over slot...

SP: I agree that it's probably tough to find hitters in-season, especially in early June. Teams that have hitting available want to maximize their return (and be sure they're out of contention), which means waiting until the trade market develops in July. And then you have to decide whether you want to compete for someone like Nick Johnson or Aubrey Huff.

As I mentioned earlier, I don't mind the Dellucci signing--it's a good depth move. I just don't have high hopes that he's the guy to solidify the offense and help keep the Jays in the race (even if the Litsch injury makes the playoffs that much more remote).

Ice Cream Jonsey said...

I don't know if Dellucci could really block Snider. Let's say Travis tears it up and starts hitting, I don't know, .328/.394/.534 over the course of 200 at-bats. They're not gonna leave him down to give regular time to some guy who's in his mid-thirties. That'd be preposterous.

greenfrog said...

Plus, JP has caught lightning in a bottle with 30-something veterans a few times (Zaun, Stairs, Cat), so you can't blame him for trying.

DT said...

Rios/Wells aren't hitting 3-4 tonight.

Stoeten said...

Well, I guess I can't disagree with Brattain's ghost. Jesus, SP!

But wait. What could he have done? He's the General Manager, he's allowed to trade somebody to improve the position. He had the best pitching in the majors and then goes and does nothing to get them a fucking bat? That's horseshit.

Greenfrog, you're right that his 59 game season counts, it's just, you said "full" seasons. I don't doubt at all that he's going to suck. I don't disagree that there are strong parallels with the Mencherson signings, but I think calling him a Mencherson has a connotation that means it's already a shit move. Maybe I'm way off on that. But it's a totally fine move, as long as they don't turn it into a Mencherson by giving it 300 plate appearances before admitting it's a mistake. I'm usually into patience, but not on these guys who already haven't been good for years. But... I don't think we disagree on that.

It's only McDonald starting. SS hits 9th instead of leading off

Stoeten said...

Good call on lightning in a bottle guys that actually worked, Greenfrog. And there are younger ones, too: Carlson, Downs, Richmond. And they're even sending him down, first, too-- hopefully they actually let him earn his way up.

Was going to say Tallet, but I'd forgot that he was traded here for Bubbie Buzachero. But JP's never fleeced anybody in a trade, eh Griffin?

DT said...

Was going to say Tallet, but I'd forgot that he was traded here for Bubbie Buzachero. But JP's never fleeced anybody in a trade, eh Griffin?

I would like people to debate the merits of the Lyle Overbay / David Bush trade so I can better form my own opinion, during this rain delay.

I am tempted to say that the Jays got the better end of the deal because of all the surplus pitching we have now. We would be looking to move Bush anyway, if we had him right now.

A douche is a device used to introduce a stream of water into the body for medical or hygienic reasons, or the stream of water itself.

Douche usually refers to vaginal irrigation, the rinsing of the vagina, but it can also refer to the rinsing of any body cavity. A douche bag is a piece of equipment for douching—a bag for holding the fluid used in douching. To avoid transferring intestinal bacteria into the vagina, the same bag must not be used for a vaginal douche

Does Texas even get rain? Apparently it does.

Dellucci isn't Mencherson yet but JP is certainly treading on thin ice when it comes to defending the move (assuming he even bothers to do this). It's almost impossible to overstate how bad Mencherson was last year, and DD comes with virtually the same pedigree (outfielder, mid-30s, hasn't been good in several years, just released by a bad ballclub, was a player JP was interested in long, long ago but seems to be lost in a time warp over).

OK, that's enough on that particular issue. Whew!

Wookiees are a race of hirsute bipeds in the Star Wars universe. The most notable Wookiee is Chewbacca, a companion to Han Solo.

Adult Wookiees are typically taller than most humans, averaging 2.1 meters (6'11").They possess enormous strength - Solo states that his friend Chewbacca can pull a mans' arms out of their sockets if angered. Wookiees have a keen sense of smell - Chewbacca uses this hypersensitive faculty to detect the presence of a monster in a trash compactor on the Death Star. Wookiees are fully covered with a thick coat of hair. Wookiees have good hand-eye coordination and are shown to be excellent marksmen. Chewbacca is shown in such diverse planets as Hoth, Tatooine and Endor, never requiring any type of environmental protective clothing. Wookiees have a lifespan of several hundred years

The Wookiee language is Shyriiwook. Wookiees are capable of understanding Galactic Basic, but generally none are able to speak it due to the structure of Wookiee vocal cords. In the Star Wars Original Trilogy, Han Solo shows a knowledge of Shyriiwook, or can at least understand his companion.

Scutaro is a career 136/160/136 hitter against Millwood. Which explains McDonald subbing in for him (plus, Cito probably figured that Marco needs a rest). However, running out a bottom three of Millar, Barajas and McDonald against a RHP is unlikely to strike fear into the heart of the opposition.
