Draft Shit & Game Threat: Jays (32-27) @ Rangers (33-23)

WALLPAPER - CHUCK NORRIS

With the way teams have been shying away from older players in favour of players from within their own systems in recent years, I really should be way more up to speed on the draft—which takes place tomorrow, with the Jays picking 20th. But I’m not. Our friend Keith Law does some fantastic work, and that’s pretty much my only source on this stuff. So, I’m not going to pretend like I have a fucking clue what I’m talking about here—I’m just going to link to KLaw’s latest mock draft, which has the Jays now picking Chad Jenkins, a right-hander from Kennesaw State, though “they're hanging in on Chad James, several other college arms and are on the fringes with Pollock,” he says.

There’s a scouting video on Jenkins (subscription only), and here’s KLaw’s scouting report:

Jenkins is a strong, thick-bodied right-hander who'll touch 93 and sit 89-92 and was still up to 91 in the eighth inning of his start on Saturday. He throws a hard slider at 83-85 mph with good tilt but a somewhat early break and a straight changeup at 82-85 that might be more effective if he could take a little more off it. His delivery is rough, and he looks unschooled; his arm is way up above his shoulder, he lands on a very stiff front leg and his arm slot varies from three-quarters to low three-quarters. He has a starter's build and starter's stuff, but a team drafting him may have to work on his mechanics to leave him in the rotation. He has a chance to develop into a No. 2 or No. 3 starter, but not without some significant improvements. He has been rumored to be a candidate for a signability pick in the first round and won't see the end of the second round.

And here’s an interesting note from Jeff Blair’s latest column in the Globe and Mail: “The Blue Jays will not likely ‘apply’ for [currency equalization] money this year, sources say. That’s because one of the ways the Blue Jays ‘earned’ their currency equalization in recent years was by being good lads during the amateur draft and not paying players over slot.”

“If just one team goes over, we’ll go over,” Paul Beeston reportedly told Bud Selig. And seeing as it’s a given that the Nationals will pay just about anything they have to in order to get Stephen Strasburg, it sounds like the Jays days of obeying the commissioner’s office are over.

Tonight’s Game…

Tonight Casey Janssen (1-2, 5.82) will try again to make me not look like an idiot for trumpeting his return so heavily, and will hopefully miss a few bats for once in Texas’s hitter-friendly park. He faces Scott Feldman (5-0, 3.79)—Feldman!—who has been excellent since joining the Rangers' rotation, but, come on, we know is a fucking shitbag.

Josh Hamilton won’t play this series, but that won’t make the Rangers’ lineup all that much less intimidating, especially since Halladay won’t make an appearance this series. Frankly, just a couple wins out of these four games would be a little bit nails, and it’s about time for Janssen to get his shit together—which I insist he’s capable of doing—and get this thing off on the right foot. And fuck, with Derek Holland (1-3, 6.54) slated for the last game of the series, you can feel pretty good about your chances with that one. Could a win tonight spark something? After they leave Texas the Jays have 9 of 12 games against Florida, Washington and Cincinnati, and even though they’ve struggled with the NL in recent years, those are three teams you don’t exactly mind seeing on the horizon.

Jenkins, James... James, Jenkins. Holy fuck I'm confused. Are we talking about two guys or do you infact, not, have your shit together here?

"Its Feldman.....from across the hall."

Karman said...

If it's indeed 'Bazarro World', then the Jays might actually not suck excessive cock in Texas

Anonymous said...

so lets see, tough righty on the mound, millar is the DH, and Inglett is on the bench. nice, cito, nice

The Manute Bol Experience said...

I'll believe they'll go over slot when I see it. But, if they do go over, its a pretty huge move.

Joel said...

I know you're used to Gibbons putting the backup catcher in at DH but real managers keep their utility fielders on the bench until needed, they don't put them in the DH spot.

I know Inglett's .125 average since he got to Toronto is really blowing everyone away but don't worry, he'll come back down to earth.

Brandon E.M. Savage said...

The issue is that Millar is pretty much a utility DH... Play him against lefties, fine... But call up someone like Phillips, Harper or Coats (maybe) to DH against righties.

DT said...

I'm a Cito fan, but is he not the guy who has actually put John McDonald in as a pinch runner, and then left him in as DH? That would be the all-glove, no-bat John McDonald. Cito isn't exactly perfect with this stuff. Why not Lind at DH, Inglett in LF?

Anonymous said...

Millar is OPSing a robust .612 against righties dipshit. Put Inglett in left and DH Lind. Pretty fucking simple if you ask me when they are going against a guy who holds righties to a .598 OPS.

Anonymous said...

If Janssen survives 3 innings, I'll be impressed

JB said...

So how does Overbay get a promotion in the batting order around here?

jeremy said...

it's time to get a real DH. Millar has been funny and all but the joke is getting old.

jeremy said...

Well if you don't get a promotion by being way better than the four hitter, i am not sure how.

JB said...

Cito probably thinks Overbay is hitting as well as he is hitting because he slots him #7 everday. Superstitious idiot.

Joel said...

Yeah Jeremy is right. Fuck all of this Inglett talk, he played way over his head last year.

Anonymous said...

feldman's peripherals are not that good. hopefully they take it to him tonight

Anonymous said...

Rios up...

Jerry: "Curveball, hit on the ground to short..."

Now, where have I heard that before?

JB said...

His peripherals are pretty good actually. 1.19 WHIP including 55.2 ip and only 45 hits. That's good.

Anonymous said...

.244 BABIP. lucky. doesn't strike guys out.

Anonymous said...

Kinsler was like, how the fuck did I miss that?

DT said...

He's probably referring to Feldman's .241 BABIP.

Anonymous said...

Nice start for the California Kid.

Anonymous said...

Vernon...what the...?

Dan W said...

Lind!

JB said...

I love that Lind kid.

Anonymous said...

Hey you fuckshits. Adam Lind is good , yo.

JB said...

How did Vernon get aboard -- I was in the can.

Dan W said...

By the way, straights in poker can lick my balls.

Dan W said...

He walked.

Joel said...

He walked, JB.

j said...

Walk for Vernon.

JB said...

A walk for Vernon is nails. That is great!

Anonymous said...

Great AB from Rolen.

Dan W said...

Hahahaha. Oh Kinsler.

Anonymous said...

Happy about the HR. Grumpy about the fact that Millar is our DH, and probably will be for the next month and a half.

Anonymous said...

Another play that Wells makes a couple of years ago. Murphy is a pest.

JB said...

If Snider gets healthy and gets back on track in AAA, he should be recalled and start against righties and lefties. For the doubters, he actually hit better against lefties than righties.

Damn Wells!

Anonymous said...

Holy fuck Davis, tell your stache to chill out.

DT said...

I agree JB, and I kinda get the impression (from JP's comments especially) that they won't call him up until they really are prepared to play him every day. JP didn't sound like he was happy with Cito NEVER playing Snider against lefties.

Brandon E.M. Savage said...

What the fuck is with Janssen striking guys out? Good idea to not give that Davis guy anything in the strike zone... His porn-stache is getting in his eyes.

Anonymous said...

JP must go nuts every night with Cito at the helm

Anonymous said...

Agreed the Jays need a LH bat. Disagree that Snider is the solution in '09.

DT said...

JP must go nuts every night with Cito at the helm

When I first read this, I thought it said "JB", not "JP". I'm pretty sure it holds equally for JB.

JB said...

Cito did the same thing with Green and it made a lot of people angry back then, especially Green. Snider seems like a guy who would stay quiet, but was privately enraged with the way Cito treated him.

Where did JP say this? Want to read it.

JB said...

Snider is the solution, like Lind this year.

The problem with Cito is that he is almost impossible to fire. How do you fire a guy who is on your level of excellence? Things have to go very wrong. Not some bullshit lineup problem or shitty bullpen management.

DT said...

He didn't say he was mad, he just made comments along the lines of "Travis wasn't playing enough here". I took it as a diplomatic way of saying he wished Snider had played more, but maybe I'm reading too much into it.

I don't have a specific thing in mind, so go ahead and google it.

Anonymous said...

Rios's stance just looks fucked up.

Anonymous said...

Snider isn't the solution this year. Neither was Lind in his first year.

Joel said...

Snider was playing like shit and he wasn't doing much in Las Vegas last time I checked.

Anonymous said...

They need to get another left-handed bat in the lineup if they're not gonna call up Snider, be it signing Dellucci or trading for Nick Johnson...not saying one of those guys would be the saviour, but they'd have to be an improvement over Bautista.

Anonymous said...

nick johnson is the solution. not really sure what it would take to get him, but i'd give up mills. too much? not enough?

Anonymous said...

i'd rather have inglett over dellucci

Joel said...

Sean West has a no hitter going through 6.

DT said...

The Red Sox turned down Nick Johnson for Manny Delcarmen:

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/05/red-sox-shoot-down-delcarmenjohnson-swap.html

I guess Delcarmen is a pretty established bullpen arm, but that seemed like a pretty low price to me, and still Boston thought it was too much.

Joel said...

I'm not a big fan of having a bloop single guy in at DH.

DT said...

What the? How did Kinsler single on a pop-up to Aaron Hill?

Anonymous said...

dellucci is total shit

The Manute Bol Experience said...

Just dropped over his head DT. Real cheap one.

Anonymous said...

Agreed. Dellucci is Wilkerson v. 2009.

DT said...

I love having a patient hitter like Vernon Wells in the middle of the lineup.

Anonymous said...

DT - or he was saying "Snider wasn't playing good enough to play everyday here, so we sent him down so he can."

I think you're trying to read to much into it.

Anonymous said...

I'm impressed !

But stay on the look out for a homerful inning if he stops keeping the ball down

Anonymous said...

two walks from VW. i think the earth just stopped rotating

Dan W said...

I agree with anon 8:58's interpretation, although I also think JP disagreed with Snider's PT early on because he's not retarded.

Dan W said...

Thought he was out, tight one though.

DT said...

Yeah, I probably was reading too much into it.

The Manute Bol Experience said...

Looked out....but we'll certainly take it.

Anonymous said...

haha he was out, woot!

Dan W said...

Sweet jebus Lind is good.

have you ever seen a one trick pony....

JB said...

Lind is the man while Millar is the chump.

Anonymous said...

Yea the more playing time Millar gets the more his oldness/shittyness is exposed. We still in contention, if we could only get a real power bat.

Joel said...

This should be good:

Ricky Nolasco, RHP (2-6, 8.17)
vs
Roy Halladay, RHP (10-1, 2.52)

I predict Blue Jays 17, Marlins 0. Halladay perfect game, 10 strike outs, 17 ground ball outs.

Anonymous said...

millar stung that one though. feldman sucks

Stoeten said...

It's nor bad, I'm just being a pussy. L-shaped and, I dunno, 3/4" long on the side of my finger. Not that deep. Goddamn glass exploded in my hand while washing it. It's a good one, but nothing serious. Pain in the ass to type without my index finger though.

JB said...

Didn't Millar's stats the last two years expose his oldness/shittiness?

Anonymous said...

Um, Millar just hit one on the screws. He's had a good (and lucrative) career - no chump there. But JP is a chump if he doesn't find a proper LF or DH over the next month.

Joel said...

Rolen.

JB said...

Rolen -- wow. Isn't he hurt or something?

The Manute Bol Experience said...

That was fucking sweet.

Anonymous said...

@JB Yes, but his stats aren't bad for a guy who would only be playing 1-2 games a week off the bench as was originaly planned.

With regular playing time it's not good.

Stoeten said...

Don't hold your breath foe a bat. It will all depend on how well the team hangs on. No sense giving up futures for this year if they're going to fall out of contention in August. JP, I think we've learned, is pretty conservative with this stuff-- especially in-season.

SP said...

GBOAT can hit 10 HRs this year if he wants, as long as he keeps doing stuff like that

Joel said...

Do the Mets have anyone expendable? They could package up Johnny Mac and a pitching prospect for a decent bat.

JB said...

Um, Millar has on OBP below .314 now.

The Manute Bol Experience said...

Nolasco is a lot better than those numbers, Joel. But you're right, the Jays will still murder that night.

Anonymous said...

Jays' infield D rocks.

Janssen has no business shaking off Barajas.

Anonymous said...

Travis snider is the answer i think, bit if not we have sooooo much depth in the minors i think we can really get a nice player in a trade.

The Manute Bol Experience said...

The problem with trading with the Mets is that they have three superstars (position players) and everyone else on that team is a fucking scrub.

Stoeten said...

I just don't see how a team would give up an above average-- or even above Millar-- quality hitter for Mac and a prospect. I mean, I guess it depends on the prospect, but I'd assume Cecil, Mills, Purcey, Romero, and Castro are off-limits.

Could an NL team use Richmond?

Brandon E.M. Savage said...

And they lost any prospects they had when they traded for Santana... There's not much to trade for on that team.

Joel said...

Yeah, I was just looking through their stats and I don't see much.

Everyone complains about JP not doing anything but no onee has any decent ideas.

Anonymous said...

why would the jays go over slot to sign the nex josh banks? law says guy will not last the second round..so why would the jays go over slot and take him in the first? ohh.. i forgot..JP has priapism for low ceiling pitchers.

Anonymous said...

Janssen discovered that rule in baseball where if you throw three strikes you don't have to pitch to that guy any longer.

JB said...

New Yankee Stadium is a joke. Both Swisher and Damon could turn into Maris and Mantle.

I will never forgive the White Sox for getting rid of Swisher for a scrub like Wilson Betimit.

Stoeten said...

Not sure why I'd assume that, though. But I'm just not sure they're ready to make the call on who's got a future here and who doesn't.

Anonymous said...

STOP GANGBANGING PARKES' MOM AND FIX THE SITE !!!

Stoeten said...

Anon bitching about slot, I'm pretty sure I've heard Wilner say that he'd expect over slot picks to happen more in later rounds.

Stoeten said...

Hey Gangbang retard, try being constructive and saying what's wrong. I've been problem free for a while now.

Because He Looked Sick On The First Two said...

Holy Shit.

We've got 2 HR and 13 RBI coming off the bench tonight.

That's not great depth.

Just sayin'.

Anonymous said...

How about Aubrey Huff? He's owed $8M this year and probably wouldn't require a lot of talent in return. Of course, the O's would be reluctant to trade within the division, but maybe they'd be happy to see the Jays put the beat down on Boston and NY.

Stoeten said...

Well, it's not like the bench guys, except Bautista, have had much playing time to add to those numbers.

Joel said...

Suzie McNeil seems pretty smart. Someone should ask her what bat the Jays should deal for.

JB said...

Now Jeter gets a cheap one to right.

Anonymous said...

man..how many mashed balls by the jays have turned into outs tonight?

i always get confused by this..what are more likely to be hits on babip? grounders or non grounders? i think its grounders...but it seems that most hits are not grounders.

Anonymous said...

nick johnson and his OBP would be awesome. of course, cito would bat him eighth and sit him against lefties

Stoeten said...

Huff would be great, but it depends on how much talent they'd want in return. If there's only a year left, I don't think the divisional thing is an issue, and yeah, I bet it wouldn't go over nearly as badly if they traded him here and not NY or BOS, but still... they'd probably want too much.

Dan W said...

Yeah I dont see why those 5 would be off limits with the current pitching situation the way it is.

Anonymous said...

line drives have a ridiculously high BABIP. over .700 i think. fly balls are nil, and grounders are around .280

Stoeten said...

Johnson would be alright, and cheaper. I don't think the Jays would be the only team in on him, though. I'd give up a Purcey and an Inglett for him. Is that anywhere close? I have no idea what his value is.

Joel said...

Too bad Detroit is winning. Word before the season was that they would be looking to dump salary because of the economy.

The Manute Bol Experience said...

Apropos BABIP:
I think most hits are line drives, but BABIP is most influenced by whether or not your grounders are going through. Of course, I'm just pulling this out of my ass so its probably wrong.

JB said...

Too bad we aren't talking about Adam Dunn. Look at his numbers. I really wish JP was a fan and signed him in the off-season. Would fit nicely as the DH of this team.

Anonymous said...

The Rangers have hit some balls hard tonight too (Byrd's lineout to the wall in right; the screaming grounder to Rolen last inning; Young's liner up the middle caught by Hill). I think both teams have been fortunate on the defensive side of things.

I just hope Cito doesn't stay too long with Janssen...the wheels can come off quickly in this park. And the 'pen is well rested after Halladay's "I'll take it from here" performance yesterday.

Joel said...

Yeah, he went to the Nationals. Holy fuck, anyone could have had him for a bit of money.

The Manute Bol Experience said...

Stoeten: Someone before said the Nats turned down Delcarmen. Which seems smart to me.

Anonymous said...

i think the sox turned that deal down

Joel said...

Everything is going right for Casey but I have the same nervous feeling I have the nervous feeling I have when Richmond is pitching a good game.

Anonymous said...

but im looking for ground balls vs all others

Brandon E.M. Savage said...

I thought that was the Sox turning down that deal, not the Nats... Hrmmm...

Anonymous said...

More runs, please.

JB said...

The Sox had to turn down that deal. The Nats would do that in a heartbeat.

Brandon, yeah it was the Sox turning that down. The Nats were ready to deal Johnson for Delcarmen, according to reports.

Joel said...

There isn't a single person in that Home Hardware commercial that I don't want to punch in the face.

Dany Heatley Speedwagon said...

Cecil, Mills, Purcey, Romero, and Castro are off-limits

Ya, wouldn't want to trade away your possible 4 through 9 guys in the starting rotation depth chart for help or anything. Gotta keep the cupboards stocked because stuff like that never goes bad.

Anonymous said...

My guess is the Nats would want Romero, Cecil or Mills. Or maybe League.

Anonymous said...

Am I the only one absolutely fucking baffled by Rogers steadfastly refusing to market their own product nationally? I mean, what the fuck? How are they supposed to sell Jays Caps in Vancouver or the East when they play Yankees games?

Anonymous said...

the thing with nick johnson is you are only getting him for half a season, so giving up romero/cecil is way too much

Peg City said...

If I had to guess, I'd say Chris Davis wears a lot of Afflicted and Ed Hardy shirts.

Joel said...

They're all possible #2 guys and Cecil is a possible #1. Of course they might not be people JP would want to trade.

Anonymous said...

Janssen is starting to lose his control, hopefully he can get it back.

The Manute Bol Experience said...

Oh fuck, you guys are right, I misread the Johnson/Delcarmen thing. I guess a reliable bullpen arm is worth more than a guy who isn't going to start. But in the Jays situation, Johnson would get a lot of PA's and is probably worth more than he is to Boston.

JB said...

I think their strategy is to sell digital cable boxes and have people subscribe to all four SN channels.

Dany Heatley Speedwagon said...

They're all possible #2 guys and Cecil is a possible #1

Let's see Doc, then Marcum and McGowan soooooo where exactly would these supposed, possible number #2's and #1 get the playing time? If they are that good (how the fuck do we know) wouldn't the team be better served to get expected value in return rather than wait and see if they'll fill in those 4th or 5th starters roles?

JB said...

I have to admit that because Sportsnet plays so many MLB games, I don't have to subscribe to the extra innings package.

The Manute Bol Experience said...

The thing that pisses me off is that even though I do subscribe to all 4 regions, I only get my local one in HD, and its showing the fucking Yankees. I'm paying for the channel and the HD package, this channel has an HD feed available, why can't I fucking watch it?

Anonymous said...

uh oh

DT said...

Are they not showing the Jays on Sportsnet Pacific tonight? That would be a first.

Having said that, lots of people here complain that we get tons of Jays games, and not enough Red Sox/Yankees. Not everyone in the rest of Canada loves Toronto.

JB said...

I'm glad that they decided early on that Hill could not play shortstop.

Joel said...

Fuck dude, they're all young. They'll get playing time in the future. It has nothing to do with this year or next year.

Anonymous said...

Purcey is off limits? Are you shitting me?

Dany Heatley Speedwagon said...

Gotta go with JB... sportsnet combined with time shifting and all the different HD channels gives you a plethora of games from different markets so there is no need for extra innings. Hey NHL... wake the fuck up and take a page from the MLB playbook.

Ughhhh. Get a cheaper hit.

That's not what the Toronto media has taught me.

The Manute Bol Experience said...

Hey Davis, here's a hint. Its going to be a low curveball. Don't swing at it.

DT said...

It has nothing to do with this year or next year.

You're right, they're all young, and so the projections need to be tempered with the understanding that prospects often don't become anything near that you expect.

At the same time, if some/most of these young guys develop, they will have more starters than spots in the rotation, which means they'll have excess assets that anyone would logically want to use to upgrade the team in areas where they're weaker.

It also has a TON to do with this year and (especially) next year, since they might not have Roy longer than that (and whether they do or not may be impacted by Roy's impression of the team's willingness to make moves towards winning).

Dany Heatley Speedwagon said...

90 pitches already... Grady Little would say he's just warming up, I say get him the fuck out of there.

DT said...

That's not what the Toronto media has taught me.

Anonymous said...

Jansenn is throwing some good stuff...just a little unlikely

Anonymous said...

Is anyone else watching this bullshit? Has there ever been cheaper runs?

Anonymous said...

this inning has been fucked

Dany Heatley Speedwagon said...

Or play the percentages from the perspective that more guys don't pan out than do, trade a young prospect (they are prospects still... 1-10 starts a major league career does not make) while they have some upside and hopefully luck out by getting some hitting talent for a guy who is at best going to turn into an everyday guy.

I'm pissed at Hill. I can't help it. Yes, he's a solid ballplayer, but he seems to fuck up a lot of key grounders from the 6th inning on--no idea why.

Looked like Barajas missed the tag, but got the call. That was the ugliest half-inning ever. Miraculously, the Jays still have the lead.

its funny, hill hasn't looked great on D in some spots this year, but his UZR numbers are great
