One Ump Blows Call, Another Blows Jeter

jeter

You’ll have to forgive me if this was made clear on either the Jays’ TV or radio broadcasts, but I didn’t have my Sports Sync Radio today, which forced me to listen to Jamie Campbell and Rance Mulliniks—and it turns out, thank fuck, I’m pretty good at tuning them out. So I didn’t quite grasp what the big deal was when Derek Jeter was called out trying to steal third early in the game, and Joe Girardi was subsequently tossed for arguing.

“Jeter thought he was safe,” reports Matt Gelb in the Newark Star-Ledger. “The ball had beaten him there, but he moved his left hand around Scott Rolen's glove and replays showed he touched the bag before Rolen's tag.”

"He didn't tag me," Jeter told umpire Marty Foster.

"He didn't have to," Foster said, according to Jeter. "The ball beat you."

Juh? OK, that’s pretty fucked. I mean, I know that umpires sometimes call guys out because the ball beat them to the bag, but… uh… I’m pretty sure most players are going to know that that’s not the rule.

Especially, you know, someone with a solid gold cock like Derek Jeter.

"Jete's not going to argue unless he's safe," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who was ejected for breaking one of baseball’s cardinal rules, trying to suck Derek Jeter off while a member of the umpiring crew was simultaneously trying to do the same. "That's the type of player that Derek Jeter is."

"In my 27 years in the big leagues, he is probably the classiest person I've been around," said crew chief John Hirschbeck, who was reportedly surprised to see the golden boy arguing, adding, “It would make his actions seem appropriate if that's what he was told.”

Marty Foster, the umpire who made the call, was not made available for comment after the game, but on behalf of all Jays fans I’d like to tell him, uh… thanks.

You know, just fuck off Derek Jeter. This is only a headline because it's Derek Jeter. Derek Jeter is classy! Derek Jeter doesn't argue! Derek Jeter has bedded many women! Derek Jeter should get the benefit of the doubt!

You know what Rolen would have done in a reversal of this scenario? Told the ump he missed it, trotted off the field, and got the gift call next time.

In short, fuck off, Derek Jeter.

"solid gold cock"

I pissed myself on that one.

Jeter, he of the "stick my ass out for every pitch I don't swing at, which obviously means it's a ball" move. I'm glad to see someone take aim at the unshakable "Jeter is classy!" narrative. Ack and Stoeten: nailed it, both of yas.

jeter is a douche bag. oh and leave it to a yanks fan to claim he is a better hitter than Pujols. yes, a buddy of mine made that claim

I cannot imagine an umpire actually saying that -- unless he was pointing out that he couldn't get a read on the actual tag. Jeter sucks for even saying that.

Oh, what the fuck am I doing reading comment sections on this website at 11:30..

JUST wanted to say, 4 entries later, fuck every single one of you with a bad word to say about John McDonald. Seriously, fuck you if you can't remember the desolation of seasons past, when that man's defense was the only fun part of this stupid shitty team.

I hate baseball. And Derek Jeter.

Jerry and Alan were hammering the point all afternoon long that the Jays had benefited from some clearly bogus calls. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go play the world's saddest song on the world's tiniest violin for the Yankees and all their fans.

Um, just a reminder to everyone to vote early and often for Adam Lind as the final AL player to make the All-Star Game. Think how cool that would be for Lind and for Jays fans. The deadline is Thursday at 4 pm.

sarah, i want to lick your ass

and ps: i would lick johnny mac's ass too, if he was any good.

Sarah, no offense (or, take offense, whatever), but fuck that bullshit noise. I love Johnny Mac - I really and truly do - but he shouldn't be holding down a roster spot in honor of his 2007 WebGems. For the amount of benefit his defense gives the team now, they might as well promote Brian Dopirak to provide some pop off the bench.

(Yes, I know Mac won the game with his tater today, but that is so clearly the exception to the rule that it shouldn't even be in the argument.)

and fuck your "stupid shitty team" comment too.

You tell 'em Ack. Glad to have you back posting here by the way. It's been really shitty lately.

Dude, I'm not even saying he should still be on the team, and certainly not as a memorium of his '07 season. Just that fans shouldn't be turning on him over nothing because he hasn't played this year. Of course he hasn't played this year, Scutaro's amazing. But that's no reason to be a dick about the guy who near single handedly kept the Jays entertaining during some excruciatingly long stretches over the past few years.

Granted, this would have all made more sense in the context of the thread I was reading. But whatever. I love John McDonald, the end.

And fuck you, this team fucking sucks so much of the time. I love them as much as anyone, believe me, but fuck THAT bullshit noise.

Johnny Mack is a beauty. No doubter.

Johnny Mack can't get rusty. If Scutaro ever decides to take a day off, Johnny Mack will come in and hold down the fort. Aaron Hill took a day off once, the guy is coming off a concussed season, why not give him a day off here and there down the stretch. Or keep letting him DH until Johnny Mack cools off. As of June 27th, it even looks like Johnny Mack has taken the lead in the backup 3rd baseman's race. Hopefully Cito loves this guy as much as I do, because I could totally see him getting 2-3 starts a week down the stretch. Seeing Rolen and Overbay's rested stats has me convinced that Hill and Scutaro should DH at least once a week each. This would keep them fresh while helping the Jays DH situation. Not to forget it would allow Johnny Mack to show his true value to everyone's favourite second half sleepers. Hopefully the dinger was more convincing than Hill's 0 for 5 at DH was. -WAMCO'09

Interesting to note that Girardi called Jeter out after the game. Can't copy-paste in this window but the jist of it is that he said being aggressive is fine, but you can't get called out trying to steal third base.

Umpires saying things that are candid is absolutely hilarious. I'd like to hear a lot more umps be like 'yeah Milton Bradley? fuck you too!' or maybe take a swing at Carl Everett, if he's even still alive.

I used to umpire softball in a beer league and every now and again I would miss a call, as I was drinking heavily. I would generally admit that I fucked up but I wouldnt change the call if it affected anything, because you cant do that. Once that call is made, it's the call. It shouldnt matter what you say. I dont get fucking managers and players who get called out and then lose their fucking minds. Like... I understand theyre on a big stage and there is pressure and a drive to win... but if it's anything beyond that, it's fucking stupid to the point of absurdity. As an umpire, if a player ever got in my face about a call, that player did NOT get the benefit of the doubt again. ever. and maybe MLB umpires are different but theyre human beings, not robots. I don't imagine Lou Piniella gets Christmas Cards from too many umps.

Remember when the Jays blew that massive lead a few years back and Quantrill went mental on the umpire over balls and strikes, who subsequently responded with 'yeah buddy? well i'm not the one who blew a fucking eight run lead!' Quantrill's head nearly exploded in anger, mainly because the guy was right.

unprofessional? maybe. but awesome. The Jays wound up winning anyways, otherwise I'd probably have committed umpracide. but it's just another part of the sport that makes me love baseball.

and Johnny Mac is genuinely a good dude and with Scutaro playing as well as he is, having his glove around to spell Hill and Marco every now and again is totally fine. Who do you want to replace him? Russ 'hey guys in the fourth row, have a ball!' Adams? I sure don't. and Sarah is right... no matter what his struggles, you shouldnt turn on a guy who has completely given himself to a fan base. Plus he's hitting like 275 this year. what is the problem?
