It's Over

They did it, man. They fuckin' did it!

JP Ricciardi has been fired as Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager of the Toronto Blue Jays. Alex Anthopoulos takes over, at least until a new president is named and starts making whatever changes he sees fit.

"This was a tough decision and a difficult one for me personally as I have enjoyed J.P.'s friendship and his perspective on the game," said Paul Beeston, acting President, and CEO, in a release. "J.P. has put an incredible amount of effort into improving the team and he has brought along a number of great young players. However, I feel that it is time for a change and accordingly we have decided to move on."

This, as has been obvious for months, is a move that had to happen. From a consumer relations perspective, carrying on into next year with Ricciardi would have been disastrous for the club.

While the relative merits of the job he's done over the last eight years can be debated-- and have been, endlessly-- what can't be debated is how completely any faith in Ricciardi's abilities has been, rightly or wrongly, destroyed in the minds of much of the fan base. The team simply couldn't go on with this man at the helm and expect fans to keep buying tickets and lapping up their bullshit.

It's really that simple-- as much a PR move as a baseball move-- and what's most surprising, and dare I say negligent, about it is that it took so goddamn long. We've known for months that this was coming, but Rogers and Paul Beeston allowed the fans to grow more and more disillusioned, more and more disinterested in the team, when this one simple act, performed in early September, could have spared so much ill feeling towards the club.

Still, they ultimately did the right thing for the franchise-- the first thing that had to be done as they begin to repair their shattered image in the local consciousness. So... yeah... that's it. It's over. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

ROGERS today announced that J.P. RICCIARDI will be leaving his position as Senior Vice President, Baseball Operations & General Manager of the Toronto Blue Jays effective immediately. Mr. Ricciardi joined the Blue Jays in 2001.

"This was a tough decision and a difficult one for me personally as I have enjoyed J.P.'s friendship and his perspective on the game," said Paul Beeston, acting President, and CEO. "J.P. has put an incredible amount of effort into improving the team and he has brought along a number of great young players. However, I feel that it is time for a change and accordingly we have decided to move on."

Alexander Anthopoulos, Vice President, Baseball Operations & Assistant General Manager will fill the role commencing today.

There’s a reason why you’re attracted to some GMs and there’s a reason why you’re not attracted to some GMs. I don’t think you’d be very happy if we brought JP Riciardi here.

We’ve done our homework on guys like JP Riciardi and there’s a reason why we don’t want JP Riciardi. I don’t want to get into specifics.

SP said...

This should've happened as soon as they decided that 2010 wasn't going to happen like we thought. Instead they decided to use JP to do their dirty work and then ditch him. I guess that's a pretty smart move but kinda dickish too. I still don't get how the fuck Anthopoulos leaped ahead of LaCava on the GM depth chart.

JB said...

Fake umps are in the Cubs/Diamondbacks game. It is what Toronto is known for now.

Brad Fullmer Fan said...

This was a move that probably had to be made to appease the fanbase, as unfair as it was. Outside of his complete inability to deal with media, I've never had much of a problem with JP's work. For the most part, all of his moves had logic behind them and improved the baseball team. You can't say that about every GM.

A couple of things...

#1. Why did they wait this long? Was it simply because this cheap organization didn't want to pay somebody else to do his job for the last month?

#2. Why is Tony LaCava not the GM right now?

#3. Why is Cito Gaston not going out the door with him? Well...I kind of know the answer to that one...it's PR.

Brad Fullmer Fan said...

I hope the answer to #2 isn't because Anthopoulous is Canadian, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I have no problem with the JP firing but I wasn't hollering for it. Cito needs to go ASAP. I'm So fucking sick of hearing about his 2 rings. SO FUCKING SICK. It was 16 years ago. 16 FUCKING years ago. He is not a good baseball manager, there is absolutely no argument that can be made against that. There's a whole generation of 20 something Jays fans that we're too young or were not baseball fans 16 years ago so fuck the nostalgia. People seem to think Cito rode off into the sunset after 93 and never mention the shitastic 4 years he managed after. He's brutal, his baseball philosophies are just plain wrong, His in game decisions are wrong, his batting orders are wrong, his starting line ups are wrong, his bullpen management is wrong. Almost every idea he has about baseball is wrong. His players laugh at him and have no respect for him. He has turned one of baseballs best bullpens into a pile of steaming crap. at least 5 players have should have legitimate beefs with him, probably closer to 10. He needs to be fired Sunday night.

Beeston also needs to go, ownership needs to come out and make a statement, no later than monday about the direction this team is taking. I want answers and I want them now.

Brad Fullmer Fan said...

If the Jays stop exploiting market deficiencies because of this ("Moneyball"), then yeah, that isn't good at all.

SP said...

Saying "Moneyball is dead" is like saying evolution is dead. It's a time-tested, universal business strategy: take advantage of ineffiencies in the market. It works now and it'll work in the 26th and half century when we're flying around in Jetsons cars and players are wearing Spaceballs helmets.

SHK said...

Relax on the Gaston stuff... a decision will be made by the new GM.

And JB, I can't imagine Scutaro having another season like this one. If they can bring him back cheaply, I would sign him, but I would still seek other options.

JB said...

That wasn't my point. A legitimate leadoff guy is someone who gets on base. Marco Scutaro did the job this year.

Cito thought that Devon White was a good leadoff guy because he was fast. But Devo posted a .318 OBP.

SHK said...

Cito also put Scutaro in the leadoff spot everyday.

Chris said...

@SHK I had to vent about Cito, I've been holding it in too long, seeing Millar play 3rd was the last straw. I also think there's chance Scutaro might accept arbitration when offered, he's type A, having a career year at 34 in a contract year and is suffering from an injury that might scare other teams. I think he might have trouble finding a team.

Chris said...

@SP and Brad Fullmer Fan, The market is a lot less "inefficient" now than when Moneyball came out. So the Moneyball philosophy might not be as effect now

JB said...

He also put J-Mac as the #2 hitter, and Kevin Millar as the #3 a few times so please don't give Cito any credit for lineup moves.

The New Pres can also demand that the missing letters in the Hall of Shame in the Outfield can be put up! It makes a first world team look like a third world team with L E Jays in the outfield...whatta a no brainer.

A True Blue Jays Fan

PS This is a very happy day for JP haters. Second happiest this week after Cito Dorito was exposed as a douchebucket even behind the scenes! Can you imagine that Dorito got more complaints than Gibbons from the players? And Gibby fucking fought at least three of them. Look Gaston the Dorito Man did a good job initially BUT his cluelessness about how the game is currently run AND Retardi's absolute stupidity on sign bad contracts and the MenchMillarsasons of the world caught him between a rock and a hard place. Anyway, Goodbye,Gaston AKA Clueless Doritohead may you enjoy your role as roving ambassador for this much maligned franchise.

Has anyone noticed that Psych wilner hasn't cliamed that this team is better than in the Ash era, lately? He even wised up to the fact that this team sucks. He seems like a nice guy, when he's trying to shoot down the callers who are dead on BUT where will be his view be on JP? I loved how Rolen went from being the GBOAT to the Greatest Ingrate of all time after he left! Include Juan Pedro and Dorito on that list too. I wouldn't be surprised if someone in the media blames JP for the leaks on Gaston AKA Mr Dorito.

Last but not least, I hope and pray taht JP ends up on Boston so that he can ruin that team as well. I can't wairt to hear him slag the Rogers in an even more vitriolic fashion when they kept him on too long as GM. IN the end, Big Nosed Masshole will show his true colors. Hopefully, the Jays will get a real GM like Towers or Gillick who have a kinda sorta clue, not that excuse making Bean eating Blowhard. On the little I know about the sitch I would say dump any ungrateful jackbutt who doesn't wanna respect the Manager. His career as a Player and Manager speaks for itself. Wells has to re-evaluate his performance and attitude,...awesome you try and go somewhere Vernon even if the Jays released you, most teams won't want a spoilt rotten-no performance bum like yourself. "Old School" might grab yah the wrong way Overbay but your about as useful as Adam Laroche (.248 vs L) or that fader Casey Kotchman (.249 vs L) with your robust, now hold your breathe cause i didn't quite think it would be this low .190 avg vs L,...only when it is "right" should you play. If any other player is discontent I certainly hope their grievances have better support than what you 2 offer,...brutal. I certainly hope Snyder ain't being sour about Cito cause boy oh boy he was bitter when he was sent down. Buck up men,...I would have no prob making minimum and playing the game. Bring with you next year Boys the same desire to run your Manager out of town to Spring Training and maybe we can have a good year with a healthy pitching stiff. I can't remember where I read it yesterday, but someone made a good point about the position the team is now in with regards to Cito. The Jays can't fire him. You don't give a locker room full of unhappy, underperforming, overpaid players even a whiff of control over the manager's role or any other for that matter. There isn't a manager in MLB who will want to take that vacant job. Not to mention the effect it would have on the portion of the fanbase who support Cito wholeheartedly.

The players have acted pretty abhorently here, whether Cito deserves it or not. Have enough respect to keep it in-house and not go whining to the media...NOT for Cito's sake though, for the fans who adore him for what he did for the city in 92 and 93. It's pretty simple.

The speed at which Paul Beeston acted in firing JP proves what 96% of you guys have been posting all morning. Cito may not be perfect but he is a Player's Manager, not like Guillen and Pinella (good perspective by the way). He isn't perfect, but he was a player, a black player who played when he had to eat at different places than his teammates and but up with the N word every where he played in the southern States. He said it himself, I tried to treat all the players the way I wanted to be treated as a Player. What can be more fair than that? Production is the Players responsibility and they are well compensated. No just Salarys but buffets after every game, people cleaning their cleats and washing their clothes and carrying their equipment etc.... Beeston got rid of an underacheiving name dropping scourge that wanted to blame everyone but himself. I hope the players realize that Cito is not going anywhere next year unless he desires to leave!! Cito spoke out of turn about players affairs all the time (ie: Barajas status). He threw them under the bus constantly to the point that Aaron Hill & even Roy Halladay have seen enough.

Let the old man walk away - in some advisor's role or whatever. The players hate not only his treatment but MUCH more importantly that he DOES NOT put them in the best position to win baseball games. His horrible in-game management is enough for me to want him gone forever & ever.

How many 1 run losses have we seen this year?

There are a lot of people spouting shit.

I'm particularly amused that he was fired less than 24 hours after the Cito story came out. This feels like a PR move to distract from it. Obviously JP was going to be let go but it didn't make any sense to do it today. The new President should name the new GM. Like I said earlier... I wonder if Anthopoulis knows if he is interim or not. I doubt it.

I am sorry but as far as I am concern the players who did not perform are the losers. What do they do? They are not professional at all. We should have a "Dave Winfield" at the club house and make sure everybody is doing the right thing. As a fan, I am very disappointed about the players. Cito won two World Series for us. What have the players did for us? We pay them 80 millions a season to them....Be a man, do the right thing.

I'll complain about this ownership all I want. Firing JP really solves nothing until this team actually gets themselves a plan.

Cito won nothing Anon 3:47.
The players - White, Alomar, Carter, Olerud etc, etc - THOSE are the people that won those World Series championships.
Cito watched.

SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT 92 and 93 already.

@Ritchie - Cito is a player manager but all the players hate him? I truly don't understand Cito defenders. It is painfully obvious he can't manage, painfully obvious he's not a players manager. Race has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he can't manage. I don't care that he played in the south. I don't care how hard it was being a black player. This has nothing to do with that fact he is bad at his job.

Why can't players question a manager who make obviously bad and obviously wrong decisions?

@Anon 3:23 re Overbay, It's right to not start Overbay v LHP but to never use him to pinch hit when the LHP is long gone.

@Don Felder How exactly has Mr. Gaston done a great job. How the fuck can you define this as a great job? Do you watch baseball or just remember he won 2 world series 16 years ago with the highest payroll in baseball and was fired 4 years later because he really can't manage?

Whatever is going on in the clubhouse should not be taken onto the field. After last nights deliberate, attempt to lose the game, which they successfully did not only did they disrespect Cito and the other coaches they disrespected the fans. As one of those fans who supported them all year going to as many games as possible, I am disgusted. I went to the last home game to show my appreciation cheering as loud as I could for Vernon “boo” Wells because I have not liked the way he has been treated by many fans. This display was a slap in my face. Here is a newsflash boys if you are not happy playing for Cito and being a Jay forfeit your salary and go play for a US team. Because most of you could not be sold to another team and after last nights display; -which other managers and fans of teams will hear about certainly not watch as only Canadians are -Rogers not only will not be able to give you away they will not be able to pay someone to take you. The only way I will be seeing you next year are if most of you are playing for another team. I thought I might not return unless Rogers made an honest effort to make the Jays a better team I never thought it would be because of the players as well.

So lets get this right.Cito's record at the beginning of the year was 27-14 with the team missing 3 of the 5 starting rotation. Then the players stopped producing and he reacted by playing others. Now those players aren't happy and want to meet with Beeston. The players he was saddled with include BJ Ryan and Alex Rios, both who failed with their new teams, but when they played in Toronto they failed because Cito treated them bad.
So Cito went 27-14 with a depleted pitching staff, then took a stupid pill, forgot everything he knew about baseball, and the team went into a tailspin and the players are blameless because they are the poor players who have had to put up with Cito.Right JB and BFF.

This is a PR move because it happened today - just to deflect attention away from Cito...wait 2 days and all is well I guess...

Whatever, I can't see one person (including JP) who benefitted from JP STILL being employed by the Jays. It's not like JP was going to rebuild his reputation as a GM with a $70 mill payroll in 2010.

Though I am a JP apologist, I do think it was time for him to go...but, he is CLEARLY being scapegoated for EVERY problem surrounding the Blue Jays which is bullshit - Griffin blaming JP for the Cito mutiny? Is he going to blame Bill James when the Star finally kicks his ass to the curb?

I'm not sure how any person actually watching this baseball team on a day-to-day basis could think Cito Gaston was doing a good job. It's just dumbfounding to me.

And now that we know all the players hate him and are paying attention to his stupid shit, too? What the hell is keeping him around at this point?

Wow, nice article. I wonder how long he has had that in the can:

Faced with a clubhouse crisis and a fed-up fan-base, the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday removed the most polarizing figure in club history when they fired general manager J.P. Ricciardi with a year remaining on his contract. The move was made in fill in city and circumstances...

Simple answer... there is no way Gaston gets fired while Beeston is interim president.

BFF, I'm hoping Beeston is trying to think of a way to gingerly escort the old fella out.

Cito's gotta go but it surely is a delicate situation given how the unwashed masses adore him.

If they field another lineup like this Cito Gaston's sister could manage the team, it doesn't fucking matter.

What, tasteless?

James said...

My honest opinion is that they blew this thing up. . I know everyone is tired of all this, and want a quick fix. but that's just going to prolong a succesful season. we have a lot of good pieces, but essentially only one great one. I would clean house for next year, get rid of overbay, millar, barajas, chavez etc etc. go with a young line up. Bite the bullet and thank doc for being the best blue jay ever, apologize for letting him down and trade him to an october bound team. Find a team that will take wells for half his contract, even just for principal. I boo him every game i go to, in hopes that one day he'll just crack and stop showing up.

Anonymous said...

it's all a matter of situational positioning anyway. When the Jays were strong and winning, the pitching staff loved Cito for sticking with them and giving them a chance to dig out of a jam. Now when the team is doing badly players want to complain that he leaves them in too long. Players used to love how he worked everyone into games... now it's a problem. The bullpen, if the articles were correct, was mad at Cito for losing faith in BJ Ryan, who wouldn't have had a spot out of training camp if it weren't for the size of his contract. So even when he makes a hard decision he gets crud for it because at the end of the day, a good record means nobody whines and a bad record means everyone other than the professional is the expert.

Chris said...

@Radar You have no idea which players are happy and which ones are not, for you to assume the ones that aren't producing are the ones that aren't happy is ridiculous. I also don't think anyone ever said the players are blameless. They went 27-14 because they were hitting the cover off the ball and hitting with runners in scoring position which they all but stopped doing.

The way Cito has handled Randy Ruiz is reason enough for him to lose his job. Dont even get me started on How he's handled Millar, Snider, Lind, Accardo, Carlson, Frasor, Downs, League, Wells, Rios.

The "most valuable asset" (Roy Halladay) was not an asset and may never have been a major asset until JP arrived. He kept him here with two contract extensions (the second of which may be the best deal for a franchise player in his "prime years" in all of baseball) and because of this, Roy will not experience free agency until his mid-30's...which is amazing when you consider that NEVER seems to happen without a Derek Jeter-like contract.

AA will trade Roy and the fanbase will not blame him in the least like they would have with JP - and if he manages to get a couple of nice pieces, he will become even more of a media darling for "salvaging something from JP's mess." Ash may have drafted Roy...but Roy was not an all-star, Cy Young winner, perennial Cy Young candidate, franchise player on and off the field and the best pitcher in franchise history until JP got here and kept him here through ALL of his prime years. AA is simply benefitting from the hall of fame asset that JP kept for him....so let's not forget that there is an inextricable link between the best player the franchise has ever produced and KEPT through his prime years (in the free agency era) and the most vilified GM in team history...

It's really easy to be an computer chair coach. . theres a reason why cito gaston has 2 world series rings and you have none. . I'm sick of people blaming cito for the the jays falling, oh he left pitchers in too long, he didnt pinch hit. He got the best he could out of this group, but when have a team that consists of career underachievers what do you want him to do? Get the best manager in baseball, and put them in cito's situation in 2009, and ask yourself if they would be any better. the answer is simply NO

Chris said...

@Anon 4:34 that's just plain stupid and doesn't even deserve this response I am typing.

One thing that's interesting to me is that we haven't heard a player criticizing JP, at least not recently. Halladay came close during the trade deadline and Delgado wasn't happy with him on the way out, but you'd think from the way the media presents him, that the players would hate him too. Through all the stuff coming out about Cito yesterday, there was nothing about JP. Accardo could've easily blamed JP just as much for the jerking around but it seems like his hate is directed completely at Cito. Same with Snider, Ruiz, Rolen and all the other presumed complainers.

Don Felder said...

Agreed Anonymous 4:32
Everyone is so quick to point the finger at CIto, but I bet if you asked Lind, Hill, Scutaro those players wouldnt complain. Its easy to struggle and then to blame your coach for not playing you everyday, but the reality is if the player was performing he would force cito to keep him in. In reality 2 position players have done that this year Hill and Scutaro, and guess what they played ALL the time. . you critizers just dont get cito's managing style. Its about consistancy and instilling his players with confidence to go out and make mistakes and know they wont be pinch hit, or miss a game because of it

Joel said...

There isn't much reason to criticize the GM as a player. The GM is the guy that brought all of them to the team.

Anonymous said...

Rolen?

Anonymous said...

What have the Jays accomplished since bringing in JP! He is an arrogant, selfcentered egomaniac. He sits in the ball park like he is really somebody. Cito doesn't make the trades, or sign the free agents. All you peope who blame Riccardi are right on the button! Rosenthal, is that a real person? When I watch him I can't help thinking that he is one of those wooden dummies and sombody else is doing the talking. What a waste of time this guy is, he should be working for one of those grocery store tabloids.

SP said...

Joel, that's a good point, but the players also want to win, and the GM is the guy in charge of building winning teams. Whether it's fair or not, you'd expect some players to complain about moves or handling of players, operations, etc.

Yeah, so as a player you're going to go to the media and say that you don't like the team the GM has assembled - your teammates?

Roy Halladay took it about as far as you can to say "we'll see where the club is at the time my contract is up." That's as close as you can come to saying "this team sucks shit."

Anonymous said...

"Everyone is so quick to point the finger at CIto, but I bet if you asked Lind, Hill, Scutaro those players wouldnt complain."

Isn't Hill one of those players who, implicitly or explicitly, complained about Cito?

Obviously the Toronto White Jays aren't going to like to hear it "straight up" from a man who played baseball when he was called a N*****, while the current version of the Blue Jays, led by the fourth Reich Doc Halladay, aren't even willing to mix with other cultures, other than those mandated by affirmative action (i.e. Wells and Rios) initiatives.

Why do you think Doc doesn't speak to the media? He doesn't want his racial attitudes on display a la Michael Richards...if he talks to much, he'll go on a N***** rant as well. Really, what does everyone like about Doc? His Aryan-like discipline and workout regimens?

The White Jays have spoken - they will not play for a Black man. They do not speak out against JP Ricciardi because they have a deep respect for his methods of circumventing the multicultarilism proscribed by MLB and keeps the bare minimum amount of minorities on the roster. This simultaneously explains why the Jays never are involved with steroid scandals, but also have the collective athleticism of a professional bowler.

Cito wants athletic minorities and not a bunch of pussy white privileged guys who have no heart. Who can argue with that?

Hill on Cito: "I think any relationship is salvageable, but on both sides there's got to be a little give and take."

Read what you like into that but it seems to me that Hill might have a problem.

Ruiz has done nothing but perform and can't get a sniff.

Open your eyes and you'll see he's not a good manager, the philosophy is a bad one that only works when hitters are going well. When players see guys who are struggling going out there every day it must make them question the manager.

James said...

Young players like hill, lind seem to be ok but there is a core of players that have been under acheiving. This is a tough division but you can not let good players go. Rios was a necessary trade. The team need to get behind Cito and support him. Most players in baseball seem to feel that Cito is a good manager and I think is is fair. Instead of blaiming the manger these problem players should worry about player proper ball.

CC said...

Wow, last year he was a players manager, according to the players. A year later he is out of touch. What a bunch of pampered school kids. Easier to blame Cito and the other coaches than the players. Wells and Overbay who I like as ballplayers, are just average ballplayers at this point in their carrers. Hill has had a great year and so has Lind. I wonder how much "the Doc" is involved. Didn't get his trade so he pouts for several weeks. How much is he being paid to PITCH and keep his mouth shut, the same with Wells! These guys are employees and should be embarrassed with the effort they have shown.. If I did my job like they do I would be history! Just a bunch of whining school kids. Snider, sent to Vegas and then pouts because he was sent down! Give me a break!

Holy fuck, where did all these retards come from? The players are wrong for noticing that Cito can't manage?

This nonsense about them being whiners who aren't blaming themselves needs to fucking stop. Not one single player is blaming Cito for their bad performance. None of the talk about this has anythign to do with ANYTHING except that there is tension in the clubhouse that needs to be resolved. Stop reading more into it than that.

These same players underachieved under John Gibbons, and did anything like this come out about him? Not even close. This not about prima donna players trying to blame everybody but themselves for their poor performance-- stop trying to make that the issue, and stop trying to justify bringing back a shitty in-game manager who the players don't want to play for. Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with you people?

Don't get me wrong, I think Cito is a great man too, but for fuck sakes, being a great man doesn't mean he's a great baseball manager and doesn't mean he's a good fit to manage this group. True, I'd have far less sympathy for the players here if I felt Cito did anything close to resembling a good job, tactically, this season, but he didn't-- and the fact that he didn't is part of why these issues have arisen in the clubhouse.

For fuck sakes. The Cito cock smoking brigade keeps acting like the players are just a bunch of whiners from a generation who can't take criticism. Well, if that's what you think, please note that they're therefore also from a generation who've noticed that baseball managing has evolved in the last thirty years.
