Jays Call Off Chris Snyder Trade
According to the Arizona Republic, concerns about the surgically repaired back of D-bags catcher Chris Snyder have caused the Jays back (zing!) out of trade talks.
“Snyder underwent a microdiscectomy surgery, a procedure that is designed to relieve pressure off a nerve in his back,” they say. “It’s not considered a major surgery, but if you’re Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos you obviously want to be completely sure he’s going to be fine, especially since he’s owed $11.25 million over the next couple of years.”
Yep. Sounds about right. Oh well…

46 rational and reasonable comments:
It was far more likely the case that someone talked sense into AA and he realized he should have had concerns with the fact that Snyder is god awful. Trading a useful, affordable player like Overbay to get a backup catcher with no tangible skills is WAY too high a price.
Any other catchers out there we can flip Overbay for?
Mike, Overbay has one year left on his contract, so he's completely expendable. And I'm not sure which Snyder you're looking at, but the .237/.348/.452/.800 he put up in '08, when he was last healthy, is hardly awful. Well... the batting average is, but so what?
His contract could have been an issue, if he couldn't translate those numbers to the AL, of course, but still, he's hardly awful.
awesome! my fantasy of a gregg (the two gg represents how he likes his tities) zaun return lives.
it says of not off on the title
i want to see raul chavez play 150 games and see him lose 100lbs over the course of the season.
Mike, look at Snyder's minor league track record, he's got talent, and he plays a premium position. 1B is much easier to fill than finding a decent catcher who can contribute offensively.
Hey, hey, hey. *What* is going *on* here?
Oh well?
This is great news. What is the benefit of adding Chris Snyder and his terrible contract when you can sign a catcher for next to nothing in free agency? It's not like this team is going to be winning anything in the next 2 seasons.
So, the Jays are moving to Phoenix?
I'm not sure how much more money you guys think Overbay would be making under a new contract compared with what he's getting now to validate the statement that he's gone once his contract expires. Looks to me like Lyle is paid pretty adequately right now and would be unlikely to be getting a raise of any material size. And if Lyle is gone because he hates the organization, well... there's a hell of a lot more problems we don't know about.
My sense is that Snyder's career OPS is close enough to Barajas that there's zero reason to be trading a valuable, affordable asset in Overbay for an overpaid, possibly injury-prone catcher whose contract is a potential disaster. That Snyder put up these stats in the NL West is but another worry that he's being tremendously overvalued by the Jays organization. Finally, let's not write off Arencibia just yet either.
TSG - 1B may be an easy fix in terms of finding a big bat but Lyle's very solid defense, affordable contract, and high OBP make him a valuable asset for a salary-conscious team such as Toronto. I wonder... who is Toronto going to sign as a free agent that will replicate the plus offense AND defense lost by Overbay's departure? Because anyone that I can think of is gonna cost a shitload more than Overbay.
The very fact that Snyder is presumably the best return the Jays can theoretically get in return for Overbay should be proof enough of the ease with which he can be kept as a Jay after 2010. By this I mean that Lyle ain't Doc. That a player plays in Toronto and has a contract that's expiring doesn't necessitate that said player will leave the organization. And if the Jays are going to be operating that way, we may as well all pack up and stop rooting for the team, since it will be a perennial also-ran.
Going off topic a bit, that's what I don't quite get about the AA plan. In general, I think a much stronger argument can be made that the team in its current form minus Cito and plus a couple of key signings can win 95 games than having to start trading away everyone. The rebuild without the rebuilding is gonna be really disheartening for all the pieces in place that AA is going to need to convince to re-up 4 - 6 years from now when the team is theoretically on the verge of winning 95 games consistently. Hill, Snider, Lind, the young pitchers, etc... are not going to be here by the time AA is finished with his restocking of the system. It's a problem that no one is thinking about now that may end up hurting the team down the road. After the past couple of years, the front office is asking a lot to the current stars to believe that things are going to start to change but it's gonna take another couple of years.
It started with Arnsberg's departure and Cito being granted another year and continues with this rumor. We're beginning to head down a path that doesn't look to have a very positive outcome.
Defence adds to Overbay's stock, but a team looking to get value at all their positions can sacrifice defence at 1B any day of the week.
Where did the fat Andy go? I want some more blubber!
The Blue Jays are who we thought they were and we let them off the hook! If you want to crown their ass then crown their ass, but the Blue Jays are who we thought they were!!!
concerns about the surgically repaired back of D-bags catcher Chris Snyder have caused the Jays back (zing!) out of trade talks.
That was fucking hilarious! Go back to shitty Peterborough and go back to fucking yourself! See what I did there?
I just want to pitch in the post season. Forget that I'm rich beyond my means, getting paid to play the game I love, and a hero in this community. Fuck all that. I just want to pitch in the playoffs so all the really important Americans know all about me.
Just wondering if it's the same fucking twat with all the 80s quotes or more than one twat?
Dude - we get it. You loved Saved By the Bell and think Stoeten's a dick or whatever your reason is for the endless posts. Bravo!!!!!
Now please fuck off.
Can Chavez start in '10? Why not use Overbay in a package to gain that SS the Jays are always searching for?
That being said, I didn't realize Raul Chavez is 36 years old. Jesus. 37 before opening day next year.
Is Stoeten from Peterborough? No wonder he's such an angry little twat.
Got Cat?
Chavez is unfortunatly not a starter. He's a very decent back-up, defense-first catcher who can call an alright game. He's too old and he never really had a good enough bat to be a starter.
Agreed, but perhaps he can pair up with another cheap option and hold the fort until Arencibia can hit big league pitching.
Playoffs! Playoffs! We'll be lucky to win another game. Playoffs!
I'm available, you should sign me.
I'm way better than Encarnacion, my average was 35 points higher than his.
barajas, chavez, snyder......none of them are any good. snyder maybe before his back went out...but can you think of a worse position to play with a back issue?
since its quite clear the jays have no plan to compete in 2010, just bring up AJ and give him a year at the big league level to take his lumps.
then in 2011, he will be that much more ready...or perhaps it will be quite clear that he is not the answer....
i mean Arencibia...not aj burnett..or aj hawk...or AJ from full house.
I wonder if AA is going to play some hardball with other GMs in these smaller deals just to set a precedent for dealing halladay. You have to think other GMs are licking their chops with the thought of getting halladay. Saw some shit on MLBTR about the phillies using Happ as a centre piece for a halladay deal. Fuck that!
That's right jerkstore, hold on to Halladay to the bitter end, demand unrealistic deals (JP), and watch him walk at the end of the year for fuck all (AJ Burnett).
Yeah, Toronto is a big market baseball town alright.
woah anon. you need to simmer buddy. Let's judge AA by his moves. Giving away halladay is the right thing to do. Remember he is guaranteed to net the jays two draft picks so the conversation starts at two good upside players and then you discuss the what a year of halladay is worth. Look at the pile of shit cleveland got and look at how badly the santana deal looks. You have to get value for halladay.
Scott Richmond's myspace before he became a pro.. Some pretty funny pics here..

Blair mentions that AA is going to talk to the Dodgers about Martin this week. Interesting, but I feel the price will be too high, unless it's part of a much, much larger deal with Doc.
Am I the only one who thinks Overbay should be extended, not traded. Not at 7 million, but with a creative righthanded DH platoon, he's valuable, not least for the excellent defence and decent OPS, for all his streakiness and recent weakness against lefties. To me, the problem here is what to do with Lind, not necessarily Overbay. I'd live with Lind in left and move on. Or trade him at a very high value. As everyone notes, unless you develop a catcher, you're either overpaying or back to something like Barajas.
KC
I think the general rule is with the Blue Jays is:
If we hear it first, it probably won't happen.
Trade Halladay for Billingsley/Kershaw and Martin? That would be great.
you can rely on the old man's money.
catchers don't seem that hard to come by. the royals just cut ties with olivo, who's 3 years younger than barajas, with more pop. also they may non-tender john buck, who was supposed to be good once.
The Fan590 was suggesting that if this deal had gone through, Travis Snyder would have played 1B next year for the Jays.
I agree that Snyder was too much of a risk given his salary commitments. The Jays should now focus on Shoppach, Martin, Doumit and Napoli as potential 2010 catchers.
Does anyone know if there was any sort of reason for Martin's statistical drop-off this year? Seeing his OPS drop 100 points below his career average kind of scares me, and if it's anything injury-related then I don't think he'd be worth whatever the Dodgers are asking. But if it was just an off-year, maybe the Jays can capitalize on his trade value being at an all-time low?
Martins drop off could be a result of a number of things, even as a result of no longer taking performance enhancing drugs.
However he's still a good defensive catcher and if the Jays can trade equal salary back, he is worth a look.
"So, the Jays are moving to Phoenix?"
I heard San Antonio.
My sense is that Snyder's career OPS is close enough to Barajas that there's zero reason to be trading a valuable, affordable asset in Overbay for an overpaid, possibly injury-prone catcher whose contract is a potential disaster.
mike, i have to disagree.
barajas last three years as a regular he posted ops+ of 71 (2009), 86 (2008), and 80 (2006)... snyder has posted ops+ of 103 (2008), 94 (2007), 94 (2006) in his last three healthy years.
barajas is one of mlb's worst offensive players who got regular ABs in 2009...
Martin is coming off ONE bad season.. They happen.
Going into this year, Martin was one of the top 5 catchers in the Majors and there are on around 10 good catchers total..
The notion the Dodgers would trade Martin is retarded... If it bags them Halladay? Maybe... But the Jays would be best served by getting a bucket full of talented prospects than getting a guy who will be near the end of his career by the time the Jays are a contendor.
What, no pussy for me, preppie? And I thought we were real close.
Me want food!

I'm glad it didn't happen just so we can avoid an enormous Snyder/Snider spelling fiasco. Imagine how red Wilner's face would turn.
