Let’s Pause A Moment From Hotstove Stuff To Laugh At Dinosaurs
Derek Jeter won a gold glove.
Why do they even bother with these things anymore if the voters aren’t going to take them remotely seriously? Just a complete waste of everybody’s fucking time.
Or... I know it would be a pain in the ass for the trophy engraver, but why not just go back to the original title:
Gold Reputation As A Good Defensive Player Who Also Did Well At The Plate This Year Regardless Of What His Actual Defence Is Like Because What Am I Going To Do? Watch Every Play Made By Every Player All Year? I Don't Even Like Baseball That Much, Son, I Only Got Into This Game For The Pussy Gloves

29 rational and reasonable comments:
Torii Hunter, 2009 CF UZR: -1.4
Franklin Gutierrez, 2009 CF UZR: +29.1
hmmmmmm
No Gutierrez is kind of a joke. Whatever...it's not like it matters anyway.
I'm posting this again because it's relevant today:

I find it funny when people still rail on Jeter's defense. The whole argument that Jeter really sucked on defense and was overrated because of Gold Gloves and his bat utilized UZR - now that Jeter has a positive UZR, people want to ignore it. Turn the hatred blinders off.
Jeter deserved this year's Gold Glove. And I hate him with every bone in my body.
Hey, hey, hey. *What* is going *on* here?
"Jeter deserved this year's Gold Glove. And I hate him with every bone in my body."
And that's why Ari made number 10 on the top 5 dumb ass Jays fans!
How did JB dodge that list?
Ari, fuck off. Yes, his UZR was good, but your argument about him deserving it for his great UZR becomes a little fucking stupid when you look and see guys ahead of him.
Frankly, it's just funnier to pick on Jeter to rile up the tools. Guess it worked-- though you're a different type of tool than I expected.
wow gutierrez was robbed...
umm who did you want to give it to? Here's the top 5 in UZR:
-izturis (only started 107 games at shortstop, doesn't seem right to give it to someone like that)
-Elvis Andrus (had a better UZR than jeter but made a brutal 22 errors - you really think that deserves this award?)
-adam everett (started 107 games there..again, seems kind of slim, also made 14 errors which i get isn't the greatest way to measure defense, but that's a lot of errors.)
-then comes erick aybar and derek jeter, who are kind of a toss-up..i would have chosen jeter over aybar as well.
Errors don't mean anything-- maybe throwing errors. Do we have that information? If not, I'd say it's Andrus, easily. If we do and the bulk of those are throwing errors, maybe... maybe...
i get that errors generally don't mean anything, but 22 errors is a LOT...i think it's way too many to award someone something based on defense when they make 22 errors, even though his range was great.
i think there's been way worse decisions than choosing jeter over andrus...
i just think there comes a point when you do have to factor in errors
Well, Gutierrez just this year not getting one is definitely worse. Again, I chose Jeter because it's funnier, and people get more riled up about him.
As for errors, if those are errors charged on Andrus because he muffed a ball way out at the edge of his range-- which most other shortstops would have watched sail past them anyway-- I don't think they should count for anything.
most often, official scorers aren't retards and they give the hitters a base hit if a ball is muffed by a guy way out of his range. if he reaches a ball way out of his range that nobody else could have gotten and makes a wild throw, and is given a throwing error, then it seems like the error should be discounted from this conversation. so i'm not sure why you think throwing errors are the important ones. it seems like those are the only ones that he would be charged with that an inferior defender would avoid.
Andrus also had a higher UZR, RZR, started and turned more DPs, and made more Out of Zone plays than Jeter. Errors don't mean shit. I'd rather have an error prone guy who can get to more balls than a sure-handed guy who has no range.
By the way, Hill better win the GG for 2B.
i'm not saying i'd rather have jeter than andrus, i'm just trying to show how jeter could have possibly won this award and why the voters aren't COMPLETE retards for choosing him
most often, official scorers aren't retards and they give the hitters a base hit if a ball is muffed by a guy way out of his range.
We'll have to agree to disagree on that.
They ARE retards if they based it on errors/fielding percentage alone, or even worse, if they factored in hitting. It looks like this is exactly what happened. Any consideration of way more important things like range and double plays would've given it to Andrus.
the voters aren't COMPLETE retards for choosing him
You're right, I suppose. They're COMPLETE retards for leaving off Franklin Gutierrez Guti
definitely, franklin got screwed
Why do posts have to be approved now?
It's just temporary. Our little anonymous friend is having a manic episode, posting the same bullshit for over an hour straight now. I'm sick of deleting it. I'll turn moderation off when poor baby calms down and takes his meds.
Why would someone get "into the game" for a female condom?
Vernon didn't win???? HOW COME!!!!
LOLZ
Don't worry, guys - Gutierrez is going to win a gold glove. But he'll have to wait 4 or 5 years - y'know, when his skills have declined to average or below-average but his Reputation is finally worthy of an award.
"but your argument about him deserving it for his great UZR"
This never happened. I used UZR to show he doesn't suck, and that just maybe the voters take it "remotely seriously". Then I stated a fact that he deserved the award and Foster Homes & Gardens enumerated why (FP% and E being included in the equation, not just UZR).
My UZR weighs a ton
Dirk jeter is cool
