Derek Lowe would be fucking fantastic in front of the Jays infield D. The guy has the 2nd best GB% in baseball (only Webb is better), and induces them at the rate Doc used to 03-05. He's a guy you can sign for a reasonable contract and realistically expect a sub 3.75era.

Re: Pitching: "All the pitching in the world"? That's why John Parrish and Scott Richmond were making starts this year? With AJ leaving and Marcum/Janssen/Litsch/McGowan all having question marks, yeah, going out and getting another pitcher is a good move.

They made 3 spot starts each due to lengthy injuries to two major starts. And they weren't bad for emergency call-ups. And how many teams DON'T have questions about their rotations? I'd say zero. Add in Cecil, both Romeros, Janssen, and possibly even Wolfe if needed and the Jays have enviable pitching depth. I think we can get away with not going after an FA pitcher.

Everybody else: I agree, it seems odd to potentially give up a year of free agency at Snider's peak, but I do understand wanting to see how he handles himself at the big league level. If he excels, why not pencil him into the DH/OF spot next year and then use your surplus cash elsewhere? Or at least, use less of it and just get a lesser, established DH type who won't pull a Frank Thomas when he is inevitably replaced by the kid.

I don't know... there's some logic to that, I think. And the issue of his one month of service time goes away if you keep him in the minors to start next year. No?

the only way these 30 days will hurt down the road is if the jays call up snider for good starting next july, cuz then he'll rack up around 100 days of service time and these 30 could make him a Super2 after 2011

since im hoping snider impresses enough to break camp with the team next year (and likely JP is thinking along the same lines) this should have little effect on his arb status.

hm yes riccardi has quite the record of letting key players hit FA like hill, rios, halladay, and welseriously they can just lind him in the minors for a little while extra if they're worried about him being a super2

snider is already a top-10 prospect, so its not like calling him up fits under the 'trying to look good to save his job' bullshit. if anything, it goes against it since the only real perception-changing possibility is that snider could struggle

Snider alone isn't the answer to the offence for next year. He may hit OKAY may as well let him develop more in the minors and then have him further down the line. He probably won't be an impact allstar right away. I would still sign a Manny Ramirez type to DH or possibly get offense out of SS position. Furcal wants to stay in LA but if they blow them out of the water, it might be worth it (in this scenario, Snider would be here instead of a Manny type).

Well, that wasn't a hint on my part that I'd like to see him back in Toronto (unless it was a one-year reasonably priced contract) just a happy note about a guy for whom I've always rooted.

After all, he could be the first home grown Blue Jay to mash 500 HR and it looked as if he would fall short.

A decent September where he finishes up with 35-36 HR would leave him less than two decent seasons away from 500.

Quite frankly, a lot of the guys I've heard some stump for as our next DH (Thome, Giambi) worry me since I see another Big Hurt debacle. I hope whoever the Jays sign has more than one year left in the tank.

Oh and Brattain, don't think I didn't notice your little rant on Mencherson again, you sneaky bastard.

Giving up a year of control for a month's worth of ABs in the bigs seems like it could be a waste. If Snider doesn't perform well enough to break camp with the team next spring as at least a platoon player this will be a mistake.

The Jays better give him full playing time and hope he continues to rake the ball like he has at every level so thus far.

I'm excited to see him play but I'm a skeptical about the move. It almost feels like JP wants to ensure he gets to see the top prospect in action in case someone else is at the helm next year.

Is this really the best way to put the club in position to contend for 2009 or is simply JP trying to save his hide?

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see how Snider performs, it just seems a bit rushed. If he tears up the bigs and makes the roster next year I'll be very happy.

If he regresses at all or doesn't show enough to play in the majors next spring, I'll consider this a poor personel decision and pray JP is out of town in 09.

This makes sense. No sense in not having something to get excited about the rest of the year. In the end it's supposed to be about entertainment.

Aside from the "entertainment" factor I'd love to see Snider hit well. If he comes up here and kicks ass we can trade him for Lincecum in the off-season. Rowand hasn't done the job so I'm sure SF won't say back out this time.
